Spots of interaction summarize the nature of partial connections (between science and technology) operating in the Brazilian system of innovation. A pilot study in Minas Gerais, Brazil, uses two new research tools (for immature NSIs) and presents a database with research groups located in universities and a database built upon an adapted version of the pioneering Yale and Carnegie Mellon Surveys. These complementary databases identify spots of interaction, indicating how economic sectors use specific science and engineering fields. This investigation identifies a dual role of universities in immature NSIs, as substitutes and/or complements firms R&D.systems of innovation, underdevelopment, interactions between science and technology, surveys, universities

A biomarker of cardiac function providing prognostic information is of paramount interest. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the value of B-type natriuretic peptide in patients with severe sepsis/septic shock. METHODS: We performed a prospective study in patients with severe sepsis/septic shock in a medical intensive care unit. B-type natriuretic peptide level was determined within 24 hours after the diagnosis of severe sepsis/septic shock. We also analyzed mortality, and presence of association between B-type natriuretic peptide and clinical, hemodynamic and respiratory variables. RESULTS: 23 (9 women; 14 men) patients with ages ranging from 20-79 (mean 51.3±18.6) years old and APACHE score of 22.6±11.8 were included; 15 (65.2%) patients received pulmonary artery catheters, and 20 (87%) were mechanically ventilated. Multivariate analysis disclosed inverse association between B-type natriuretic peptide values with positive end-expiratory pressure values, and direct association with creatinine (beta 0.548 and 0.377, p 0.02 and 0.002, respectively), but not with mortality, clinical and hemodynamic parameters. CONCLUSION: This is the first report on an inverse association between positive end-expiratory pressure and BNP levels in patients with severe sepsis and septic shock. BNP and creatinine levels should be taken into consideration when analyzing B-type natriuretic peptide levels in this setting

The objective of this work was to determine the total carotenoids, total phenolics, and antioxidant activity of 'UENF SD 08' (super-sweet corn) and to compare them with those of 'UENF50611' (field corn). The total carotenoid content was determined according to Rodriguez-Amaya, the total phenolic content by the Folin-Ciocalteau method, and the antioxidant activity by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free-radical scavenging method. For 'UENF SD 08', the average values were: 936.76±16.34 µg 100 g-1 for carotenoids, 346.0±3.80 mg 100 g-1 for phenolics, and 45.53±0.01% for antioxidant activity. For UENF50611, the average values were: 1,173.38±21.66 µg 100 g-1 for carotenoids, 563.33±7.97 mg 100 g-1 for phenolics, and 59.82±0.11% for antioxidant activity. UENF50611 showed a higher antioxidant activity observed due to its higher levels of carotenoids and phenolic compounds; however, the values observed for the 'UENF SD 08' super-sweet corn are within the ranges already described in the literature. 'UENF SD 08' contains a lower concentration of carotenoids and phenolic compounds than 'UENF50611', its nonmutant genetic background. However, the super-sweet corn 'UENF SD 08' has agronomic advantages, is considered a source of the evaluated secondary metabolites, and its consumption can contribute to a diet with a higher content of antioxidants.O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar os carotenoides totais, os fenólicos totais e a atividade antioxidante de 'UENF SD 08' (milho superdoce) e compará-los com os de 'UENF50611' (milho comum).

    Get PDF

Taenia solium metacestode immunodominant peptides recognized by IgG antibodies in cerebrospinal fluid and serum paired samples from patients with active and inactive neurocysticercosis

The aim of this study was to test if serological distinction between patients with active and inactive neurocysticercosis (NCC), could be accomplished by the recognition of immunodominant peptides in total saline antigenic extract of Taenia solium metacestodes by IgG antibody in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum paired samples. CSF and serum samples of 10 each, active NCC patients, inactive NCC, and individuals with other neurological disorders, were used to recognize the antigenic peptides by western blot (WB). In the active NCC the 28-32 and 39-42 kDa peptides were more frequently detected in CSF than in sera (p 80 kDa) for diagnosis of NCC. The final conclusions were that the difference between active and inactive NCC may be done with the detection of peptides only in the CSF samples and that the 47-52, 64-68, and 70 kDa bands may be included as specific markers for active NCC when detected in CSF samples by WB using total saline extract of T. solium metacestode

Simple Housing Solution Project: (Re) Building in Critical Situations

    Get PDF
One of the significant challenges of recovery in critical situations (post-disaster, post-conflict, refugee settlement, among others) is the prompt and adequate housing (re)construction with scarce resources, and the affected population’s involvement. The Simple Housing Solution (SHS) project consists of a proposal for a methodology for (re)construction of homes and other small buildings (schools, health clinics), using low-cost construction technologies and community labour (mutual help system). The SHS project’s body of knowledge was organised in the form of a course with video lessons on YouTube and a website translated into different languages. The idea is to provide material that may help affected populations to work towards their recovery, with the support of qualified professionals (engineers and architects). The purpose of this chapter is to present the SHS Methodology and its main outputs
