    Feshbach resonances with large background scattering length: interplay with open-channel resonances

    Feshbach resonances are commonly described by a single-resonance Feshbach model, and open-channel resonances are not taken into account explicitly. However, an open-channel resonance near threshold limits the range of validity of this model. Such a situation exists when the background scattering length is much larger than the range of the interatomic potential. The open-channel resonance introduces strong threshold effects not included in the single-resonance description. We derive an easy-to-use analytical model that takes into account both the Feshbach resonance and the open-channel resonance. We apply our model to 85^{85}Rb, which has a large background scattering length, and show that the agreement with coupled-channels calculations is excellent. The model can be readily applied to other atomic systems with a large background scattering length, such as 6^6Li and 133^{133}Cs. Our approach provides full insight into the underlying physics of the interplay between open-channel (or potential) resonances and Feshbach resonances.Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in Phys.     Cut-rose production in response to planting density in two contrasting cultivars

    Growing in lower planting density, rose plants produce more assimilates, which can be used to produce more and/or heavier flowering shoots. The effect of planting density was investigated during a period including the first five flowering flushes of a young crop. In a heated greenhouse two cut-rose cultivars were grown under bent canopy management. ‘Akito’ on own-roots and ‘Ilios’ on ‘Natal Briar’ rootstock were planted with densities of 8 and 4 plants per m2. Starting at the end of June 2007, flowering shoots were harvested over a time span of eight months. Based on ‘flowering flushes’, times of high harvest rate, the harvesting time span could be divided into five consecutive periods, each including one flush. The cultivars showed contrasting responses to planting density. In the first three periods the response in ‘Ilios’ was extraordinary, because at low density plants did not produce more flowering shoots, as would be expected. However, the response in shoot fresh weight was larger for ‘Ilios’ than for ‘Akito’, 35% compared to 21% over the entire study period. The results imply that there was a genetic difference in the effect of assimilate availability and/or local light environment. During the first three periods, these factors can not have influenced shoot number in ‘Ilios’, while they did in ‘Akito’. It is suggested that decreases of assimilate availability in winter caused the shoot number response to emerge for ‘Ilios’ later on

    Fermionic superfluidity with positive scattering length

    Superfluidity in an ultracold Fermi gas is usually associated with either a negative scattering length, or the presence of a two-body bound state. We show that none of these ingredients is necessary to achieve superfluidity. Using a narrow Feshbach resonance with strong repulsive background interactions, the effective interactions can be repulsive for small energies and attractive for energies around the Fermi energy, similar to the effective interactions between electrons in a metallic superconductor.     Tools to support the self assessment of the performance of Food Safety Management Systems

    Changes in food supply chains, health and demographic situations, lifestyle and social situations, environmental conditions, and increased legislative requirements have led to significant efforts in the development of quality and safety management systems in agribusiness and food industry worldwide (Ropkins and Beck, 2000; Efstratiadis, Karirti, and Arvanitoyannis, 2000; Jacxsens, et al, 2009a, Luning and Marcelis, 2009a). Nowadays, companies have implemented various quality assurance (QA) guidelines and standards, such as GMP and HACCP guidelines (like General Principles of food hygiene (Codex Alimentarius 2003), GFSI guidance document (GFSI (2007), and quality assurance standards (like ISO 9001:2008 (2008), ISO22000:2005 (2005), BRC (2008), and IFS (2007) into their company own food safety management system. The performance of such systems in practice is, however, still variable. Moreover, the continuous pressure on food safety management system (FSMS) performance and the dynamic environment wherein the systems operate (such as emerging pathogens, changing consumer demands, developments in preservation techniques) require that they can be systematically analysed to determine opportunities for improvement (Wallace, et al, 2005; Manning et al, 2006; Van der Spiegel et al, 2006; Cornier et al, 2007; Luning et al, 2009a). Within the European project entitled ‘PathogenCombat- EU FOOD-CT-2005-007081’ various tools have been developed to support food companies and establishments in systematically analysing and judging their food safety management system and its microbiological performance as basis for strategic choices on interventions to improve the FSMS performance. This chapter describes briefly principles of the major tools that have been developed and some others, which are still under still under construction

    Performance predictions for the upgrading of a VAX-cluster

    During the last two decades many interesting and useful results have been obtained in the area of queueing networks. It has been shown that the queueing network model is a powerful tool in computer perfonnance analysis. In this paper we report on some of the difficulties we met in a perfonnance study for the upgrading of the VAX-cluster at the Eindhoven University of Technology. Our conclusion has to be that there are sufficiently many queueing network models and techniques for analyzing them, but that for accurate perfonnance predictions the behaviour of memory contention is not well understood

    Multiple-day temperature settings on the basis of the assimilate balance: a simulation study

    Temperature control on the basis of a cropÂżs physiology offers advantages over a control that avoids strong climate fluctuations. The assimilate balance, defined as the ratio between the supply of and demand for assimilates, enables a radiation-dependent temperature regulation. The INTKAM crop growth model and KASPRO greenhouse model were coupled, and were combined with an optimization module to evaluate the potential of this regulation. The simulation study resulted for cucumber in all growing seasons in production increase or reduced energy consumption. Annual figures were 5.25 m3 m-2 gas reduction or 4.4 kg m-2 production increase.     Vitamin D concentration and psychotic disorder:associations with disease status, clinical variables and urbanicity

    Background The association between schizophrenia and decreased vitamin D levels is well documented. Low maternal and postnatal vitamin D levels suggest a possible etiological mechanism. Alternatively, vitamin D deficiency in patients with schizophrenia is presumably (also) the result of disease-related factors or demographic risk factors such as urbanicity. Methods In a study population of 347 patients with psychotic disorder and 282 controls, group differences in vitamin D concentration were examined. Within the patient group, associations between vitamin D, symptom levels and clinical variables were analyzed. Group x urbanicity interactions in the model of vitamin D concentration were examined. Both current urbanicity and urbanicity at birth were assessed. Results Vitamin D concentrations were significantly lower in patients (B= -8.05; 95% confidence interval (CI) -13.68 to -2.42;p= 0.005). In patients, higher vitamin D concentration was associated with lower positive (B= -0.02; 95% CI -0.04 to 0.00;p= 0.049) and negative symptom levels (B= -0.03; 95% CI -0.05 to -0.01;p= 0.008). Group differences were moderated by urbanicity at birth (chi(2)= 6.76 andp= 0.001), but not by current urbanicity (chi(2)= 1.50 andp= 0.224). Urbanicity at birth was negatively associated with vitamin D concentration in patients (B= -5.11; 95% CI -9.41 to -0.81;p= 0.020), but not in controls (B= 0.72; 95% CI -4.02 to 5.46;p= 0.765). Conclusions Lower vitamin D levels in patients with psychotic disorder may in part reflect the effect of psychosis risk mediated by early environmental adversity. The data also suggest that lower vitamin D and psychopathology may be related through direct or indirect mechanisms.</p
