New Eunicellin-Type Diterpenes from the Panamanian Octocoral Briareum Asbestinum

Gorgonian octocorals are considered a prolific source of secondary metabolites with a wide range of biological activities, including anti-inflammatory activity. In particular, the genus Briareum is known for producing a wealth of diterpenes with complex chemical structures. The chemical study of the methanolic extract of Briareum asbestinum collected in Bocas del Toro, on the Caribbean side of Panama, led to the isolation of three new eunicellin-type diterpenes: briarellin T (1), asbestinin 27 (2), asbestinin 28 (3) and the previously described asbestinin 17 (4). The structures of the new compounds were determined by extensive NMR analyses and HRMS. Anti-inflammatory activity assays showed a significant reduction of the pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β and IL-8 as well as a downregulation of COX-2 expression in LPS-stimulated THP-1 macrophages. These findings support the potential use of these marine compounds as therapeutic agents in the treatment of inflammatory diseases

DTC-FPGA Drive for Induction Motors

Direct torque control, or DTC, is an electrical motor strategy characterized for simplicity and high performance when controlling industrial machines such as induction motors. However, this technique is often accompanied by an unwanted deformation on the torque and flux signals denominated ripple, which can cause audible noise and vibration on the motor. Considerable research has been presented on this topic; nevertheless the original DTC algorithm is often modified to the point that it is as complex as other motor control strategies. To solve this problem, a novel architecture was designed in order to reduce the sampling period to a point where torque ripple is minimal, while maintaining the classical DTC control structure. In this work, the original DTC control strategy was implemented on a Virtex-5 field programmable gate array (FPGA). For the code, a two´s complement fixed-point format and a variable word-size approach was followed using very-high-speed integrated circuit hardware description language (VHDL). Results were validated using MATLAB/Simulink simulations and experimental tests on an induction motor. With this new architecture, the authors hope to provide guidelines and insights for future research on DTC drives for induction motors

La transversalidad: un acercamiento a la matemática desde las ciencias naturales y sociales

Más allá de la rigurosa estructuración de la matemática como ciencia, en este trabajo se revela la importancia de enfocar a esta disciplina como una metodología que enriquece el estudio del mundo natural y social, recibiendo y tributando significatividad tanto al aprendizaje de las matemáticas, como al conocimiento científico-natural y socio-humanístico. La transversalidad, como relación vertical y horizontal dentro de la malla curricular del conocimiento matemático, es objeto de esta investigación, siendo su objetivo desarrollar una cultura de integración de las matemáticas con todo el contenido del programa de educación básica

Uprolides N, O and P from the Panamanian Octocoral Eunicea succinea.

Three new diterpenes, uprolide N (1), uprolide O (2), uprolide P (3) and a known one, dolabellane (4), were isolated from the CH₂Cl₂-MeOH extract of the gorgonian octocoral Eunicea succinea, collected from Bocas del Toro, on the Caribbean coast of Panama. Their structures were determined using spectroscopic analyses, including 1D and 2D NMR and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) together with molecular modeling studies. Compounds 1-3 displayed anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting production of Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF) and Interleukin (IL)-6 induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in murine macrophages

Antiparasitic Compounds from the Panamanian Marine Bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Fractionation of the ethyl acetate extract of the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa led to the isolation of five compounds, cyclo –(L-Phe-L-Pro) (1), 3-heptyl-3-hydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline-2.4-dione (2), 2-heptyl-4-hydroxyquinoline (3), 2-nonyl-4-hydroxyquinoline (4), and 1-phenazinecarboxylic acid (5). The structures of compounds 1-5 were established by spectroscopic analyses. Compounds 2 4 produced inhibition on the growth of Plasmodium falciparum, with IC50 values of 3.47, 2.57 and 2.79 μg/mL, respectively. Compounds 3-4 had activity against Trypanosoma cruzi, with IC50 values of 3.66 and 3.99 μg/mL. Learning and Teaching after 50 Years of THORAX Surgery

Surgeries are practiced in different areas, and specifically in the thorax described in this chapter, the medical doctors must know in detail the biological structures in which they perform such surgical procedures. Therefore, in this chapter, we refer to the descriptive and topographical anatomy written by French doctors L. Testut and A. Latarjet. In earlier times, for several reasons, the medical surgeon operated all body organs and was involved in resolving the pathology of different areas. Currently and in the future, medical knowledge in thoracic surgery will cover subspecialties specifically divided, for example: assisted video surgery, interventional bronchoscopy, and mediastinoscopies to take mediastinal biopsies using robotic surgery of pulmonary exeresis to shorten the hospitalization period and even the days spent in the intensive care unit
