Key lessons from the DACCIWA project for operational meteorological services

    Get PDF
This document describes the conclusions of the EU-funded project Dynamics- Aerosol-Chemistry-Cloud Interactions in West Africa (DACCIWA) directly relevant to operational meteorological services. DACCIWA produced the most comprehensive observational dataset of the atmosphere over densely populated southern West Africa to date and used this dataset to foster our understanding of atmospheric processes, and to evaluate dynamical models and satellite data. With this document DACCIWA aims to help improve atmospheric predictions across time-scales, which are important for the development of greater resilience of the West African population to hazardous weather and climate change

False Prophets: Exploring Hybrid Board/Video Games

    No full text
www.edgelab.sfu.ca In order to develop technology that promotes social interaction rather than isolation, we are exploring the space between board games and video games. We created a hybrid game that leverages the advantages of both physical and digital media. A custom sensor interface promotes physical interaction around the shared public display while the un-oriented tabletop display encourages players to focus on each other rather than on the interface to the game. The ensuing social interactions define the course that the game takes, while the computer enhances the gaming experience by completing the menial tasks and providing dynamic, exciting environments. Our hybrid board/video game has the potential to enhance natural and enjoyable recreational interaction between friends

Measuring the effect of selected firm characteristics and profitability on corporate governance disclosures among publicly listed companies in the Philippiness

Disclosures in the annual reports are pieces of information that are useful to the decision-making processes. Due to recent financial setbacks, the corporate governance disclosures in the annual report are indirectly affected. As a consequence, users of the annual reports demand for more information to be disclosed to aid deliberating processes within firms. Due to limited studies in the Philippines regarding the corporate governance disclosures, this study aimed to provide an understanding on how selected firm characteristics influence the corporate governance disclosures of the publicly listed firms in the Philippines. The selected firm characteristics and profitability that this study covered were board ownership, non-executive directors, large audit firms, role duality, diffuse ownership, corporation size, audit committee, nomination committee, compensation committee, board size, and return on equity. Data was obtained from the 2007 and 2008 annual reports of the companies listed in the Philippine Stock Exchange as of year 2009. The study used the corporate governance index in measuring the compliance of the firms with the required corporate governance disclosures. By employing multiple regression analyses the study determined whether the firm characteristics are related to the level of corporate disclosure governance disclosures

This study utilized a non-experimental, descriptive research design. The respondents were 200 young adults and were identified using non-probability, quota-convenience sampling. The research instrument was adapted from the unpublished undergraduate thesis of Madrid and Mayor (2000) entitled “Perception of Adolescence on Obesity and its Implication to Peer Acceptance” and Soriano (1989) entitled “Effects and Management of Obesity among Women 40 and above in Prinza, General Trias, Cavite”. Data was analysed using frequency distribution, percentage, mean, t-test, and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Based on the findings of the study, the research concluded that (1) majority of the respondents were female, Roman Catholic, high school graduates, and without family history of obesity; (2) the respondents had high level of perception regarding obesity and its impact on health; (3) there was no significant difference on their perception regarding obesity and its impact on health when grouped according to gender, religion, educational attainment, and family history of obesity
