Thematic Identification of 'Little Science': Trends in Portuguese IS&LS Literature by Controlled Vocabulary and Co-Word Analysis

This study presents an overview of IS&LS thematic trends in Portugal between 2001 and 2012. The results were obtained by means of an analysis, using expeditious qualitative and quantitative techniques, of the bibliographic records of proceedings papers identified during this period. These records were processed using two techniques: a manual subject classification and an automated co-word analysis of the Author-Assigned Keywords. From this we designed cluster and co-occurrence maps, using the VOSviewer and the Pajek software packages. The results indicated an accentuated dynamism in the thematic evolution of this documental corpus, apart from revealing a significant difference among the themes transmitted in nationally and internationally visible production.Comment: In Proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Qualitative and Quantitative Methods in Libraries, 201

Peer reviewe

The main research topics of Physiotherapy in Spain were determined using co-word analysis in a retrospective longitudinal descriptive study. Documents that deal with Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy in Spain were retrieved from the Web of Science, without publication date limits; and analysis and network visualization techniques were used to facilitate the graphical interpretation of information, based on the co-occurrence analysis of KeyWord Plus. the main research lines are about rehabilitation and quality of life in lung diseases, heart diseases, in joint reconstruction, neurological injuries and musculoskeletal dysfunctions and its management through different physiotherapy modalities. The proposed method has turned out to be interesting for a first approach to the delimitation of Physiotherapy domain. Future works should focus on the depth study of the most representative descriptors in musculoskeletal dysfunctions to determine the research topics of Physiotherapy in Spain in a more specific way.

Development of Spanish research on stem cells. Visualization and identification of the main research fronts

    Get PDF
Using visualization techniques based on social networks, this study aims to analyze stem cell research in Spain, as reflected in the Science Citation Index (SCI) database between 1997 and 2010 , divided into three sub-periods. The selected unit of analysis was the KeyWords Plus descriptors (KW+), the unit of measurement was their co-occurrence , and the Pajek and VOSviewer tools were used to generate and display the social networks. The results show two complementary images of research: the static structure, distinguishing between clinical and basic research, and the evolutionary dynamic, analysing both the most established and the emerging lines. The main contribution of this work is to present a methodology for the visualization and detection of the main r esearch lines over time, demonstrating its applicability and its predictability in scientific and geographic domains

Trophic structure and fishing impacts on an oligotrophic ecosystem in the Western Mediterranean: the Balearic Islands

Within the context of the ecosystem approach to fisheries management, an ecosystem model was developed for the Balearic Islands in the early 2000s, covering from 0 to 800 m of depth. The aim of the study was to describe the structure and functioning of the ecosystem together with the fishing impacts. The results show that the biomass of the primary producers (PP), mainly dominated by Posidonia oceanica meadows and red algae beds, represented a high percentage of the biomass (39.20%) in the ecosystem. Most of the trophic flows occurred between PP (mostly benthic) and trophic level II. The mixed trophic impact analysis also highlighted a positive impact of the functional groups (FGs) at the base of the food web. Besides, there were important trophic flows between several demersal FGs, and many groups of the pelagic compartment, confirming the importance of the benthopelagic coupling previously reported. The mean trophic level of the catch (mTLc=2.76) was lower than those reported in adjacent areas due to the discard of benthic producers. By excluding benthic PP, the Balearic Islands showed the highest mTLc (3.44) among all the Mediterranean areas modelled, probably due to differences in the trophic structure, lower fisheries exploitation levels and lower development of the purse seine fleet targeting small pelagic fishes. The mean transfer efficiency (21.80%) was double than the global average (10%), which highlights the oligotrophy of the system, the importance of demersal production which has lower rates of transfer through the food web, and a more efficient use of nutrients in the ecosystem. Sponges, one of the most important groups of benthic invertebrates in the Balearic Archipelago, are known to recycle dissolved organic matter, which is reintroduced into the food web similar to the microbial loop, but the magnitude of this and other processes remains still unknown in this area. The present study is a first step to develop spatio-temporal simulations under different exploitation scenarios and to calculate ecological indicators to assess the state of the marine environment in this region. The authors would like to acknowledge all the people who worked on the scientific surveys and the financial support by the following projects: European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program, EcoScope, CANAL, DRAGONSAL, DISCARDLESS and IDEADOS.

    Get PDF
Patents are essential documents in the evaluation of technological research. The patent databases on the Internet are a main source of information for this kind of analysis. However there are many databases and they are very different; therefore it is crucial to know them in order to elect their best features for a bibliometric analysis. This survey studies some of main free –Esp@cenet, PatentScope, national databases; and commercial –Derwent Innovations Index, Chemical Abstracts Plus, Thomson Delphion Intellectual Property Network– patent databases. The results show that commercial systems provide value-added –data revision, analysis tools, etc.–, but the free ones are becoming trustworthy resources thanks to the improvements and options that are introduced in them

Interdisciplinarity as a multidimensional concept: Its measure in three different research areas

    Get PDF
Publicado en: Research Evaluation Vol. 10, Num. 1 (Apr. 2001), pp. 47-58Interdisciplinarity is analyzed in three different research areas: Pharmacology & Pharmacy, Cardiovascular System and Materials Science, by means of data collected from a survey to Spanish scientists. The study focuses on three different and complementary dimensions. First, diversity in personal training and research specialization of scientists is analyzed both in the field and within the research teams. Secondly, research practices and behavior of the groups are considered, taking into account the use of cross-disciplinary knowledge or techniques and the collaboration with scientists from other disciplines. The third dimension refers to the cognitive inputs and outputs of the research activity and focuses on the diversity of subjects of the journals used for publication and for reference by the research teams. Interdisciplinarity emerges in research areas as a double edge process: either as a process of jumping into a new area with people of different disciplines, in coherence with the traditional disciplinary research teams, or as a process of specialization in field traditionally dominated by a single group of disciplinary backgrounds, in which researchers from different areas join the research teams. Thus specialization-fragmentation-hybridization come all-together.Peer reviewe
