    Covalent organic frameworks based on Schiff-base chemistry: Synthesis, properties and potential applications

    Covalent organic-frameworks (COFs) are an emerging class of porous and ordered materials formed by condensation reactions of organic molecules. Recently, the Schiff-base chemistry or dynamic imine-chemistry has been widely explored for the synthesis of COFs. The main reason for this new tendency is based on their high chemical stability, porosity and crystallinity in comparison to previously reported COFs.     Co-exposure of the organic nanomaterial fullerene C60 with benzo[a]pyrene in Danio rerio (zebrafish) hepatocytes: Evidence of toxicological interactions

    Compounds from the nanotechnology industry, such as carbon-based nanomaterials, are strong candidates to contaminate aquatic environments because their production and disposal have exponentially grown in a few years. Previous evidence shows that fullerene C60, a carbon nanomaterial, can facilitate the intake of metals or PAHs both in vivo and in vitro, potentially amplifying the deleterious effects of these toxicants in organisms. The present work aimed to investigate the effects of fullerene C60 in a Danio rerio (zebrafish) hepatocyte cell lineage exposed to benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) in terms of cell viability, oxidative stress parameters and BaP intracellular accumulation. Additionally, a computational docking was performed to investigate the interaction of the fullerene C60 molecule with the detoxificatory and antioxidant enzyme πGST. Fullerene C60 provoked a significant (p 0.05) alter the enzyme activity when added to GST purified extracts from the zebrafish hepatocyte cells. These results show that fullerene C60 can increase the intake of BaP into the cells, decreasing cell viability and impairing the detoxificatory response by phase II enzymes, such as GST, and this latter effect should be occurring at the transcriptional level.Fil: Ribas Ferreira, Josencler L..     Peroxidase expression in a cereal cyst nematode (Heterodera avenae) resistant hexaploid wheat line.

    The incompatible interaction between plant and pathogen is often determined by the hypersensitive reaction (HR). This response is associated with accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which results in adverse growth conditions for pathogens. Two major mechanisms involving either NADPH oxidases or peroxidases have been proposed for generation of ROS. Peroxidases (PER, EC 1.11.1.7), present in all land plants, are members of a large multigenic family with high number of isoforms involved in a broad range of physiological processes. PER genes, which are expressed in nematode feeding sites, have been identified in several plant species (Zacheo et al. 1997). A strong correlation between HR and PER activities at four and seven days post nematode infection, was detected in roots of wheat lines carrying Cre2, Cre5 (from Ae. ventricosa) or Cre7 (from Ae. triuncialis) Heterodera avenae resistance genes (Andrés et al. 2001; Montes et al. 2003, 2004). We have studied changes in root of peroxidase mRNAs levels after infection by H. avenae of a wheat/Ae. ven¬tricosa introgression line (H-93-8) carrying Cre2 (Delibes et al. 1993).     Synergistic enhancement of electrochemiluminescence through hybridization of α-Ge nanolayers and gold nanoparticles for highly sensitive detection of tyramine

    This work presents a novel approach for detecting biogenic amine tyramine using a sensitive and disposable electrochemiluminescent sensor. The sensor is fabricated by modifying a screen-printed carbon electrode surface with two nanomaterials, α-Ge nanolayers and AuNP, which synergistically enhance the electrochemiluminescence response. The sensor was characterized using various techniques such as SEM-EDX, EIS, Raman, and AFM. The principle of the biosensor relays on the fact that tyramine molecule acts as an analyte and co-reactant, which interacts with the luminophore [Ru(bpy)3] 2+ on the sensor surface. The proposed sensor shows a linear response to tyramine concentration, with a detection limit of 2.28 µM.     Molecular characterization of novel Ehrlichia genotypes in Ixodes auritulus from Uruguay

    Ehrlichia are small intracellular Gram-negative bacteria transmitted by ticks. These microorganisms cause ehrlichiosis, a complex of life-threatening emerging zoonoses and diseases of global veterinary relevance. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of Ehrlichia in free-living Ixodes auritulus collected in Uruguay. Ticks were collected from vegetation in five localities from the southeast and northeast of the country between 2014 and 2017. Detection of Ehrlichia DNA was performed in pools of adults or nymphs grouped according to the collection site and date. A total of 1,548 I. auritulus ticks were collected in four of the five locations sampled. Fragments of three loci (16S rRNA, dsb and groEL) were obtained by PCR, and phylogenies inferred using Bayesian inference analysis for each gene independently. DNA of Ehrlichia spp. was found in 15 out of 42 tick pools. Based on the topology of the phylogenetic trees, our sequences represent two novel genotypes for the genus named as Ehrlichia sp. Serrana and Ehrlichia sp. Laguna Negra. Both genotypes were closely related to Ehrlichia sp. Magellanica, a species detected in Ixodes uriae and Magellanic penguins. Considering that all stages of I. auritulus and I. uriae are parasites of birds, their phylogenetic relationships, and common eco-epidemiological profiles, it is reasonable to state that these genotypes of Ehrlichia spp. may represent a natural group likely associated with birds. Our results constitute the first characterization of Ehrlichia spp. in Uruguay. Future studies on birds reported as hosts for I. auritulus are needed to further understand the epidemiological cycles of both Ehrlichia genotypes in the country.     Progressing the analysis of Improvised Explosive Devices: Comparative study for trace detection of explosive residues in handprints by Raman spectroscopy and liquid chromatography

    Concerning the dreadful global threat of terrorist attacks, the detection of explosive residues in biological traces and marks is a current need in both forensics and homeland security. This study examines the potential of Raman microscopy in comparison to liquid chromatography (ion chromatography (IC) and reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC)) to detect, identify and quantify residues in human handmarks of explosives and energetic salts commonly used to manufacture Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) including dynamite, ammonium nitrate, single- and double-smokeless gunpowders and black powder. Dynamite, ammonium nitrate and black powder were detected through the identification of the energetic salts by Raman spectroscopy, their respective anions by IC, and organic components by RP-HPLC. Smokeless gunpowders were not detected, either by Raman spectroscopy or the two liquid chromatography techniques. Several aspects of handprint collection, sample treatment and a critical comparison of the identification of compounds by both techniques are discussed. Raman microscopy and liquid chromatography were shown to be complementary to one another offering more comprehensive information for trace explosives analysis

    AC Electrokinetics of Salt-Free Multilayered Polymer-Grafted Particles

    Interest in the electrical properties of the interface between soft (or polymer-grafted) nanoparticles and solutions is considerable. Of particular significance is the case of polyelectrolyte-coated particles, mainly taking into account that the layer-by-layer procedure allows the control of the thickness and permeability of the layer, and the overall charge of the coated particle. Like in simpler systems, electrokinetic determinations in AC fields (including dielectric dispersion in the 1 kHz–1 MHz frequency range and dynamic electrophoresis by electroacoustic methods in the 1–18 MHz range) provide a large amount of information about the physics of the interface. Different models have dealt with the electrokinetics of particles coated by a single polymer layer, but studies regarding multi-layered particles are far scarcer. This is even more significant in the case of so-called salt-free systems; ideally, the only charges existing in this case consist of the charge in the layer(s) and the core particle itself, and their corresponding countercharges, with no other ions added. The aims of this paper are as follows: (i) the elaboration of a model for the evaluation of the electrokinetics of multi-grafted polymer particles in the presence of alternating electric fields, in dispersion media where no salts are added; (ii) to carry out an experimental evaluation of the frequency dependence of the dynamic (or AC) electrophoretic mobility and the dielectric permittivity of suspensions of polystyrene latex spherical particles coated with successive layers of cationic, anionic, and neutral polymers; and (iii) finally, to perform a comparison between predictions and experimental results, so that it can be demonstrated that the electrokinetic analysis is a useful tool for the in situ characterization of multilayered particles.Spanish Institution, Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovacion y Universidades GC2018-098770-B-I00Junta de Andalucia BF-FQM-141-UGR1

    La publicidad electrónica y tradicional en relación a la efectividad para la captación de clientes en los hoteles de la Ciudad de Huaraz, 2008

    Evalúa el uso de la publicidad electrónica en relación a la publicidad tradicional que influye en la efectividad de captación de clientes de los hoteles en Huaraz. Se realizó la revisión bibliográfica, lo que permitió conseguir las herramientas teóricas necesarias para el análisis. Se realizó el trabajo de campo utilizando la técnica de la encuesta con su instrumento el cuestionario. La población estuvo constituida por 20 administradores de hoteles a quién se les encuestó para conocer qué medios de publicidad utilizan.También se encuestaron a 209 clientes de los 20 hoteles para saber el medio publicitario para llegar al hotel. Los datos recopilados fueron procesados para la formulación de los cuadros estadísticos y sus respectivos gráficos, utilizando la prueba Z para la prueba de hipótesis. Los resultados señalan que la publicidad tradicional es más efectiva que la electrónica con respecto a la captación de los clientes. Los medios de publicidad tradicional más usados son la folletería (volantes, trípticos, dípticos), las recomendaciones de terceros y las guías turísticas, mientras que medios más usados para la publicidad electrónica son la página web del hotel y el correo electrónic
