    Anthropogenic and biological sound effects on the maternal care behavior of a key crab species

    IntroductionMaternal care in marine decapods involves eggs caring in the brood compartment until the larvae hatch. This behavior mainly allows embryo mass oxygen supply, ensuring healthy embryonic development. The present study aimed to analyze the effect of different sound sources (anthropogenic and biologic) and their temporal patterns (low and high rate: 1 min of the sound stimulus + 5 min of silence and 1 min of the sound stimulus + 1 min of silence, respectively) on the maternal care of the key crab species, Neohelice granulata.MethodsIn the laboratory, three acoustic stimuli were played back: an artificial white noise (10 Hz – 20 kHz), and two sounds obtained from the crabs´ natural habitat, motorboat passages and biological signals from a crabs’ predator fish. Three behavioral variables were quantified: still position, and two maternal care behaviors: abdominal flapping and chelae probing.ResultsResults demonstrated that the high rate anthropogenic stimuli, white noise and motorboat, affected all behavioral variables, increasing the still position and diminishing the maternal care behaviors. Otherwise, the predatory stimulus did not affect the still position although diminished the maternal care behaviors (high rate).DiscussionThe different behavioral response depending on the sound stimuli may indicate that crabs distinguish sound sources. The anthropogenic noise is suggested to cause distraction that is linked to the increased still position, while the predator stimulus would be associated with an alert behavior not affecting the locomotion behavior. The sound stimuli effect on the maternal care behavior revealed a negative effect that potentially could affect offspring survival. This is important considering the ecosystem engineering function of the studied key crab species. The reduction of the noise emission pattern rate is suggested as a mitigation action to diminish sound impact effects in the crab’s natural habitat.     Boat noise and black drum vocalizations in Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon (Argentina)

    Human-generated underwater noise and its effect on marine biota is recognized as an important issue. Boat noise can affect the communication success of fish species that use sounds for spawning purposes. During the reproductive period, males of the black drum Pogonias spp. produce calls ranging from 90 Hz to 300 Hz. In the Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Pogonias courbina is one of the primary fishing species. Although no regulation is directly applied to protect it, a ban protects the reproductive period of other fish species during weekdays. Here, we investigated the potential effect of boat noise on P. courbina vocalizations through a passive acoustic method. Acoustic data were collected, and P. courbina calls were identified and counted. The files with boat noise passages were categorized into classes according to their noise frequency range (A = below 700 Hz, B = over 700 Hz, and C = below and above 700 Hz). The fish call rate was lower in files where boat noise overlapped the fish call frequency (Classes A and C). Only boat noise from Class C was significantly reduced during days with the active fishing ban. These results suggest that anthropogenic noise may affect the P. courbina call rate and underline the importance of including the evaluation of anthropogenic noise in the current management of the area.Fil: Ceraulo, Maria.     Agonistic Behaviour and Sound Production during Male–Male Varunid Crabs (Cyrtograpsus angulatus, Dana 1851) Encounters

    Crustacean sounds are the main contributor to shallow water soundscape biophonic components. Here, we investigate the sound production of Cyrtograpsus angulatus, one of the most important intertidal decapods of the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Underwater audio and video were recorded during encounters among male pairs. Two kinds of experimental settings were conducted involving same size (SS) and different-size (DS) male crabs. Behavioural states, behavioural events and sound emission were investigated. SS spent more time in contact and still behaviour and showing competitive interactions than did DS. Crabs presented body displays involving chelae, legs, and maxillae movements with the same frequency in both settings. Our results demonstrate the production of impulsive sounds in male C. angulatus with high rates during contact and still behaviour (specifically during agonistic interactions and body displays without contact between individuals). Furthermore, we were able to describe behaviour-related variability within impulsive sounds. These outcomes provide a better understanding of the role and behavioural context of these sounds in the natural soundscape.Fil: Ceraulo, Maria.     Are semi-terrestrial crabs threatened by human noise? Assessment of behavioural and biochemical responses of Neohelice granulata (Brachyura, Varunidae) in tank

    This study examined the effects of human lab-generated noise (sweep tone) on the behaviour and biochemistry of a semi-terrestrial crab (Neohelice granulata). The experiment was carried out in tanks equipped with video- and audio-recording systems on a total of seventy-eight specimens. In total, 42 experimental trials with sweep-tone exposure and control conditions were performed using crabs in single and group layouts. After a habituation period of 30 min, the locomotor and acoustic (sound signals emitted by the crabs) behaviours were monitored for 30 min. During this time, the animals in sweep-tone conditions were exposed to ascending sweeps in a bandwidth range of 2.5–25 kHz. Exposure to sweep-tone noise produced significant changes in the number of signals emitted, locomotor behaviours and plasma parameters, such as haemolymph total haemocyte count and glucose, lactate and total protein concentrations, revealing that human noise could represent a disturbance for this crustacean species.Fil: Filiciotto, Francesco.     Comparison of mating behavior and copulation in male morphotypes of the spider crab Libinia spinosa (Brachyura: Majoidea: Epialtidae)

    The mating behavior of the spider crab Libinia spinosa Milne Edwards 1834 was studied in the laboratory. Two male morphotypes as morphometrically immature (MI) with small chelae and morphometrically mature (MM) with large chelae were used in non competitive and competitive mating trials. The liberation of putative hormones by receptive females to attract males was studied. We examined whether male body or cheliped size influence mate acquisition and copulation. The liberation of putative hormones by receptive females could not be demonstrated because males did not behave differently among four treatments exposed to water from 1) ovigerous females, 2) non ovigerous females, 3) males, and 4) a control of water unexposed to crabs. Under non competitive and competitive scenarios, copulation occurred immediately after physical contact between partners, thus a contact pheromone could be involved. The copulatory behavior and the time of copulation were similar between both male morphotypes. In non-competitive mating trials, MI males copulated successfully with females, and immediately after the mating pairs decoupled. By contrast, MM males displayed a post-copulatory guarding behavior that consisted of holding the female with the major cheliped and carrying her around the aquarium. In a competitive scenario, MM males guarded females for several hours by either caging them within the legs, or holding them out of the water when MI males approached. MI males of larger sizes than MM males did not gain mates and avoided agonistic interactions with MM males; thus, large chelae size is a more decisive trait than large body size for mate acquisition.Fil: Sal Moyano, María Paz.     Functional morphology of Libinia spinosa male gonopods, female holding systems and gonopores were described through scanning electron microscopy and histological sections, establishing differences between immature and mature individuals. The first gonopod of mature males, larger than 35.1 mm of carapace width (CW), is long, slender, and ended in two wing-like processes: abdominal, characterized by the presence of a sub-terminal ejaculatory duct, and sternal, closed and where the cuticle bulges holding setae. In immature males, smaller than 29.9 mm CW, both processes were shorter, and the tip of the abdominal process was closed. Six different types of setae were described for both gonopods. Internally, both gonopods have rosette glands in immature and mature individuals. The presence of secretions which may be involved in the molting process was observed in immature males towards the external cuticle corresponding to the rosette glands. In mature males the rosette glands could be related to reproduction. Bacterial colonies were present inside the ejaculatory opening of mature males. Females presented a typical press-button holding system and a biconcave gonopore. In immature females, smaller than 36.1 mm CW, the gonopore aperture was closed by integument bulging to the outside. In mature females, larger than 42.6 mm CW, the locking system was almost fused to the cuticle, and the gonopore showed an open biconcave form with a more inner flexible membrane. Morphological characteristics shown by the gonopods of mature males develop synchronously with the acquisition of physiological maturity, not with morphometricall maturity.     Sperm reserves are costly to produce and so the development of different sperm allocation strategies may be advantageous. Knowledge of sperm allocation strategies is important from an evolutionary perspective because they contribute to characterize mating systems. However, population differences in sperm allocation strategies of the same species have rarely been assessed. Here, we studied the male sperm allocation strategies in two different populations of Neohelice granulata in Mar Chiquita Lagoon (MCL) and San Antonio Oeste (SAO), Argentina. We found that the quantity of ejaculate transferred by N. granulata males depended on different factors such as male size and female receptivity duration, while it was independent of female size, at both study areas. Regarding the operational sex ratio factor, the amount of ejaculate transferred depended on it in MCL but not in SAO.     Mating system of the burrowing crab Neohelice granulata (Brachyura: Varunidae) in two contrasting environments: Effect of burrow architecture

    Few studies conducted in crustaceans have demonstrated how habitat features could shape the mating systems. Here, the burrow of Neohelice granulata was considered as a resource used for mating, and its architecture was characterized in two contrasting study sites: Mar Chiquita Lagoon (MCL), an estuary composed of muddy sediments,and San Antonio Oeste (SAO), a marine bay composed of gravel sediment. Burrow features differed between study sites and occupant gender. Large males constructed burrows with a chamber in MCL and with a widened entrance in SAO, while small males constructed the same narrow burrows as females at both study sites. Field experiments demonstrated that burrows with chambers or widened entries are places used for copulation, although successful post-copulatory guarding was displayed only in those with chambers. The intensity of the agonistic encounters and the success of males in winning resources (burrows/females) also depend on the habitat characteristics. N. granulata shows a resource defense mating system where males employ different mating strategies according to the burrow architecture to ensure mating success.Fil: Sal Moyano, María Paz.     Female mate choice by chemical signals in a semi-terrestrial crab

    Information about the roles of both sexes in pair formation is required to better understand the mechanisms involved in sexual selection. Mate choice could depend on the courtship behavior, involving chemical, tactile and visual signals. We determined if Neohelice granulata mate choice is based on female or male choice, considering visual and chemical with contact and without contact signals between partners and different categories of individuals: receptive and unreceptive females; and large, small, mated or unmated males. Experiments showed that mate selection was based on receptive female's choice using chemical signals, but not visual ones. Since copulation occurs during high and low tides, water-borne chemical signals would be preferentially used during high tide, while contact ones during low tide. Females preferred large and unmated males, while males did not seem to recognize receptive females using chemical neither visual signals. Females were capable of detecting the presence of the chemical signals released by large and unmated males, but not its amount. It is proposed that small and mated males are probably releasing different types of chemical signals, not attractive to females, or that they are not emitting any signal.Fil: Sal Moyano, María Paz.
