Production Optimization,Molecular Characterization and Biological Activities of Exopolysaccharides from Xylaria nigripes
The optimal culture conditions of exopolysaccharides (EPS) production in submerged culture medium by Xylaria nigripes were determined using orthogonal matrix method. The optimal medium (per liter) EPS was 60.0 g L–1 maltose, 1.0 g L–1 peptone,
5 mmol L–1 KH2PO4, and initial pH 7.0 at 28 oC. In the optimal culture medium, the maximum EPS production was 11.967 g L–1 in shake flask. Two groups of EPSs (designated as Fr-I and Fr-II) were obtained from the culture filtrates by size exclusion chromatography
(SEC), and their molecular characteristics were examined by a multiangle laser-light scattering (MALLS) and refractive index (RI) detector system. The weight-average molar masses of Fr-I and Fr-II of EPS were determined to be 6.327104 and 1.478104 g mol–1, respectively. The SEC/MALLS analysis revealed that the molecular
formation of Fr-I is of nearly globular shape. Furthermore, the experiments in vitro indicated that X. nigripes EPS exhibited high antioxidative effects though its antitumour activity was limited
Edge states and determination of pairing symmetry in superconducting Sr2RuO4
We calculate the energy dispersion of the surface Andreev states and their
contribution to tunneling conductance for the order parameters with horizontal
and vertical lines of nodes proposed for superconducting Sr2RuO4. For vertical
lines, we find double peaks in tunneling spectra reflecting the van Hove
singularities in the density of surface states originating from the turning
points in their energy dispersion. For horizontal lines, we find a single
cusp-like peak at zero bias, which agrees very well with the experimental data
on tunneling in Sr2RuO4.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures. V.2: comparison with experiment added and

Tomography of pairing symmetry from magnetotunneling spectroscopy -- a case study for quasi-1D organic superconductors
We propose that anisotropic -, -, or -wave pairing symmetries can be
distinguished from a tunneling spectroscopy in the presence of magnetic fields,
which is exemplified here for a model organic superconductor .
The shape of the Fermi surface (quasi-one-dimensional in this example) affects
sensitively the pairing symmetry, which in turn affects the shape (U or V) of
the gap along with the presence/absence of the zero-bias peak in the tunneling
in a subtle manner. Yet, an application of a magnetic field enables us to
identify the symmetry, which is interpreted as an effect of the Doppler shift
in Andreev bound states.Comment: 4 papegs, 4 figure
Measurement of the Ds lifetime
We report precise measurement of the Ds meson lifetime. The data were taken
by the SELEX experiment (E781) spectrometer using 600 GeV/c Sigma-, pi- and p
beams. The measurement has been done using 918 reconstructed Ds. The lifetime
of the Ds is measured to be 472.5 +- 17.2 +- 6.6 fs, using K*(892)0K+- and phi
pi+- decay modes. The lifetime ratio of Ds to D0 is 1.145+-0.049.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures submitted to Phys. Lett.
Confirmation of the Double Charm Baryon Xi_cc+ via its Decay to p D+ K-
We observes a signal for the double charm baryon Xi_cc+ in the charged decay
mode Xi_cc+ -> p D+ K- to complement the previously reported decay Xi_cc+ ->
Lambda_c K- pi+ in data from SELEX, the charm hadro-production experiment
(E781) at Fermilab. In this new decay mode we observe an excess of 5.62 events
over an expected background estimated by event mixing to be 1.38+/-0.13 events.
The Poisson probability that a background fluctuation can produce the apparent
signal is less than 6.4E-4. The observed mass of this state is
(3518+/-3)MeV/c^2, consistent with the published result. Averaging the two
results gives a mass of (3518.7+/-1.7)MeV/c^2. The observation of this new weak
decay mode confirms the previous SELEX suggestion that this state is a double
charm baryon. The relative branching ratio Gamma(Xi_cc+ -> pD+K-)/Gamma(Xi_cc+
-> Lambda_c K- pi+) = 0.36+/-0.21.Comment: 11 pages, 6 included eps figures. v2 includes improved statistical

Theory of charge transport in diffusive normal metal / unconventional singlet superconductor contacts
We analyze the transport properties of contacts between unconventional
superconductor and normal diffusive metal in the framework of the extended
circuit theory. We obtain a general boundary condition for the Keldysh-Nambu
Green's functions at the interface that is valid for arbitrary transparencies
of the interface. This allows us to investigate the voltage-dependent
conductance (conductance spectrum) of a diffusive normal metal (DN)/
unconventional singlet superconductor junction in both ballistic and diffusive
cases. For d-wave superconductor, we calculate conductance spectra numerically
for different orientations of the junctions, resistances, Thouless energies in
DN, and transparencies of the interface. We demonstrate that conductance
spectra exhibit a variety of features including a -shaped gap-like
structure, zero bias conductance peak (ZBCP) and zero bias conductance dip
(ZBCD). We show that two distinct mechanisms: (i) coherent Andreev reflection
(CAR) in DN and (ii) formation of midgap Andreev bound state (MABS) at the
interface of d-wave superconductors, are responsible for ZBCP, their relative
importance being dependent on the angle between the interface normal
and the crystal axis of d-wave superconductors. For , the ZBCP is due
to CAR in the junctions of low transparency with small Thouless energies, this
is similar to the case of diffusive normal metal / insulator /s-wave
superconductor junctions. With increase of from zero to , the
MABS contribution to ZBCP becomes more prominent and the effect of CAR is
gradually suppressed. Such complex spectral features shall be observable in
conductance spectra of realistic high- junctions at very low temperature
Temperature-dependence of spin-polarized transport in ferromagnet / unconventional superconductor junctions
Tunneling conductance in ferromagnet / unconventional superconductor
junctions is studied theoretically as a function of temperatures and
spin-polarization in feromagnets. In d-wave superconductor junctions, the
existence of a zero-energy Andreev bound state drastically affects the
temperature-dependence of the zero-bias conductance (ZBC). In p-wave triplet
superconductor junctions, numerical results show a wide variety in
temperature-dependence of the ZBC depending on the direction of the magnetic
moment in ferromagnets and the pairing symmetry in superconductors such as
, and -wave pair potential. The last one is a
promising symmetry of SrRuO. From these characteristic features in the
conductance, we may obtain the information about the degree of
spin-polarization in ferromagnets and the direction of the -vector in
triplet superconductors
Zero-bias conductance peak splitting due to multiband effect in tunneling spectroscopy
We study how the multiplicity of the Fermi surface affects the zero-bias peak
in conductance spectra of tunneling spectroscopy. As case studies, we consider
models for organic superconductors -(BEDT-TTF)Cu(NCS) and
(TMTSF)ClO. We find that multiplicity of the Fermi surfaces can lead to
a splitting of the zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP). We propose that the
presence/absence of the ZBCP splitting is used as a probe to distinguish the
pairing symmetry in -(BEDT-TTF)Cu(NCS).Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
A phenomenological theory of zero-energy Andreev resonant states
A conceptual consideration is given to a zero-energy state (ZES) at the
surface of unconventional superconductors. The reflection coefficients in
normal-metal / superconductor (NS) junctions are calculated based on a
phenomenological description of the reflection processes of a quasiparticle.
The phenomenological theory reveals the importance of the sign change in the
pair potential for the formation of the ZES. The ZES is observed as the
zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) in the differential conductance of NS
junctions. The split of the ZBCP due to broken time-reversal symmetry states is
naturally understood in the present theory. We also discuss effects of external
magnetic fields on the ZBCP.Comment: 12 page
