Enhanced magnetic anisotropy of Nickel nanosheet prepared in Na-4 mica
Nanosheets of nickel with thickness equal to 0.6 nm have been grown within
the interlayer spaces of Na-4 mica. The sheets are made up of percolative
clusters of nanodisks. Magnetization characteristics indicate a
superparamagnetic behavior with a blocking temperature of 428 K.The magnetic
anisotropy constant as extracted from the coercivity data has been found to be
higher than that of bulk nickel by two orders of magnitude. This is ascribed to
a large aspect ratio of the nickel nanophase. The Bloch exponent is also found
to be considerably different from that of bulk nickel because of a size effect.
The Bloch Equation is still found to be valid for the two dimensional
structures.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figure

Phys. J. B 46, 2005, 535The magnetism of isolated cadmium atoms at different sites on the surface of
ferromagnetic nickel and at the Pd-Ni interface was studied with nuclear
methods (chapters 2). The experiments were carried out in the UHV chamber
ASPIC which was connected to the beam line of the on-line mass separator
ISOLDE of CERN in Geneva/ Switzerland (chapters 3)
The first part of this work was dedicated to further investigations on the
correlation between the coordination number NN of Cd on different surface
sites and the magnetic hyperfine field (chapters 1). This correlation was
first established by Potzger et al [1].
The experimental results showed that the s-electron polarisation of the
isolated Cd atoms is rather independent on the local symmetry of the
environment. Cadmium configurations with four nickel neighbours, NN = 4, on
(100)- and (111)-surfaces experience the same magnetic hyperfine fields within
the statistical error although their symmetry is different [2] (chapters
4.1.1). It is obvious from another experiment of this series that the signs of
the magnetic hyperfine fields of Cd on Ni are negative in the configurations
NN = 5, 6, 7, and 9 (chapters 4.1.2).
The second part of this thesis is focussed on the behaviour of the spectator
atom Cd in thin Pd or Ni layers which were evaporated on Ni or Pd single
crystals. In an experiment with high precision the hyperfine parameters could
be determined for a single Cd atom which was implanted into the second layer
of a Pd triple layer. The Pd layers were evaporated onto the surface of a Ni
crystal. The magnetic hyperfine field of Bhf = - 1.3(3) T could be
discriminated from the quadrupolar interaction which was also present in the
combined interaction (chapters 4.2).
Taking a double layer of Ni on the Pd(001) crystal surface, on the other hand,
the 111mCd probe atoms take positions with an axial symmetry at a temperature
of 40 K (adatom or substitutional terrace sites). Taking the low preparation
and measurement temperature into account, the substitutional terrace position
can be excluded. The induced magnetic hyperfine field is observed to emerge
from the plane at an angle of 50(5)o [3] (chapters 4.3.1).
Finally it is shown (chapters 4.3.2) that the 111In precursor atoms keep
stable positions in the terraces of the surfaces of Pd single crystals at NN =
8 and NN = 9, respectively, up to temperatures of T = 257 K on Pd(001) and T =
80 K on Pd(111). They do not diffuse into the Ni layers which were evaporated
onto the surfaces of the Pd crystals.
