    Gas mass-flow meters: Principles and applications

    Gas mass-flow meters (GMFM) for original equipment manufacturers (OEM) applications are presently found in a relatively easy and cheap way. GMFM may be applied in a number of different situations but technical formation concerning its principles of measurement and applications are still misleading. In this paper, the principles of GMFM measurement are discussed and the operating parameters are clarified. A concept of gas mass-flow response factor is introduced and further used in a model for gas mass-flow measurement that is suitable to any gas mixture of known composition. In addition, a model for the application of GMFM to dynamic volumetric methods of dilution is presented and generalized

    Influence of Stratification and Bottom Boundary Layer on the Classical Ekman Model

    A depth understanding of the different processes of water movements produced by the wind surface stress yields a better description and improvement of the marine food chain and ecosystem. The classical Ekman model proposes a hypothetical ocean, excluding the influence of continents and the Coriolis force. It also assumes infinite depth and a constant vertical eddy viscosity. The current study aims to understand how the vertical velocity profile is affected by the variation of the eddy viscosity coefficient (k(z)) and the consideration of a finite depth. The study uses an ideal analytical model with the Ekman classical model as a starting point. It has been demonstrated that, for a very stratified profile, when the depth is not considered infinity, the Ekman transport tends to a direction smaller than 80 degrees. It differs from the classical Ekman model, which proposes an approximated angle equal to 90 degrees. Considering the modified model, it was also found that the surface current deviation is smaller than 40 degrees, which differs from the 45 degrees proposed by the classical model. In addition, it was determined that for ocean depths smaller than 180 m, the maximum velocity does not occur at the water surface, as in the classical model, but at deeper levels.Escuela Superior Politecnica del Litoral (ESPOL

    Investigación TecnológicaEl proceso de control de calidad para las piezas que en conjunto conforman prótesis y ortesis, es de vital importancia debido a que garantiza la utilidad y funcionamiento de estas para las personas. Este artículo presenta el diseño de un sistema inteligente que analiza las variables de calidad que tiene una pieza de tamaño mini, inyectada por plástico para encontrar defectos de producción, dimensiones o deficiencia de material. También se puede identificar cada parte del proceso que conforma la metodología usada para la elaboración del diseño de sistema, desde la elección del conjunto protésico a trabajar, que dependió de algunas variables especiales, como el proceso de impresión de las piezas biomédicas en la impresora 3D para su análisis posterior, la forma en que se realizó el Data Set de imágenes, gracias a un escenario fotográfico convencional que ayudó garantizar aspectos mínimos de calidad en la imagen como las sombras y el ruido y el sistema inteligente.INTRODUCCIÓN 1.     Design, Characterization, and Environmental Applications of Hydrogels with Metal Ion Coordination Properties

    In this chapter, we discuss the design and synthesis of hydrogels and related polymeric materials with metal ion coordination properties, with the aim to review the main synthetic strategies used in the area. Then, we focus on the solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ss-NMR) spectroscopic technique due to its importance as a structural elucidation tool in both powdered and hydrated state, with emphasis on cross-polarization magic angle spinning (CP-MAS) and high-resolution magic angle spinning (HRMAS). Also, we explain different adsorption models, with the aim to present the methods most commonly used to analyze the uptake properties of hydrogel materials toward metal ions or organic compounds. Finally, we will discuss the applications of these materials for the removal of heavy metal ions and organic compounds, in terms of efficiency in the uptake of these ions and the different techniques commonly used to study the coordination process and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from hydrogen peroxide (H2O2).     The beneficial effect of silica on the activity and thermal stability of PtCoFerrierite-washcoated cordierite monoliths for the SCR of NOx with CH4

    PtCoFerrierite washcoated on a ceramic monolith is an active and selective catalyst for the SCR of NOx with methane. For our system, we found that the addition of a binder to the slurry used for the washcoat is necessary to improve the adherence and to obtain a selective catalyst. In our case, we used 2 wt.% of Cabot Silica. Ultrasound experiments used to comparatively evaluate the coating adherence showed that silica prevents the washcoat loss due to attrition. Similar monolithic catalysts, but prepared without a binder, resulted in catalysts with poor activity for NOx reduction, but still active for the deep oxidation of methane with oxygen. Monoliths washcoated without a binder showed both Pt segregation to the outer surface of zeolite crystals and formation of the non-selective Co3O4. Segregated Pt clusters and cobalt oxide promote the methane combustion with oxygen, thus leaving the NOx molecules unreacted. Moreover, due to Pt segregation, the necessary intimate contact between Pt and Co active species is not favored in this catalyst, which also contributes to the low selectivity to N2.Fil: Boix, Alicia Viviana.     Electrophoresis characterization of Turnera sidoides L. (Passifloraceae: Turneroideae) seed storage proteins and its systematic implications

    Twenty-four populations of Turnera sidoides were analysed, using seed storage protein fingerprinting techniques, including 19 populations of Turnera spp. and three of Piriqueta spp. for comparative purposes. The aim was to characterize the T. sidoides complex and to evaluate its profiles as a character to clarify its taxonomic position, as well as its evolutionary relationships within the genus Turnera. The present work is the first comparative study of the seed protein fingerprint in Turneroideae. The results proved that seed proteins are useful characters to discriminate between genus and species, as well as to characterize them. The finding of exclusive bands in Turnera and Piriqueta are evidence for the existence of genetic differences between genera, and support their taxonomic identity. Our results are in agreement with evolutionary tendencies of karyotype proposed for Turnera, and support the close relationships between species belonging to the same series, except T. sidoides, which should be singled out of Leiocarpae, supporting the proposal of its inclusion in an independent series.Fil: Moreno, Ercilia Maria Sara.     A Knowledge-Based Weighted KNN for Detecting Irony in Twitter

    [EN] In this work, we propose a variant of a well-known instancebased algorithm: WKNN. Our idea is to exploit task-dependent features in order to calculate the weight of the instances according to a novel paradigm: the Textual Attraction Force, that serves to quantify the degree of relatedness between documents. The proposed method was applied to a challenging text classification task: irony detection. We experimented with corpora in the state of the art. The obtained results show that despite being a simple approach, our method is competitive with respect to more advanced techniques.This research was funded by CONACYT project FC 2016-2410.     Temporal and spatial expression of genes involved in DNA methylation during reproductive development of sexual and apomictic Eragrostis curvula

    Recent reports in model plant species have highlighted a role for DNA methylation pathways in the regulation of the somatic-to-reproductive transition in the ovule, suggesting that apomixis (asexual reproduction through seeds) likely relies on RdDM downregulation. Our aim was therefore to explore this hypothesis by characterizing genes involved in DNA methylation in the apomictic grass Eragrostis curvula. We explored floral transcriptomes to identify homologs of three candidate genes, for which mutations in Arabidopsis and maize mimic apomixis (AtAGO9/ZmAGO104, AtCMT3/ZmDMT102/ZmDMT105, and AtDDM1/ZmCHR106), and compared both their spatial and temporal expression patterns during reproduction in sexual and apomictic genotypes. Quantitative expression analyses revealed contrasting expression patterns for the three genes in apomictic vs sexual plants. In situ hybridization corroborated these results for two candidates, EcAGO104 and EcDMT102, and revealed an unexpected ectopic pattern for the AGO gene during germ line differentiation in apomicts. Although our data partially support previous results obtained in sexual plant models, they suggest that rather than an RdDM breakdown in the ovule, altered localization of AtAGO9/ZmAGO104 expression is required for achieving diplospory in E. curvula. The differences in the RdDM machinery acquired during plant evolution might have promoted the emergence of the numerous apomictic paths observed in plants.Fil: Selva, Juan Pablo.
