    The strategic interplay between bundling and merging in complementary markets

    In this paper, two pairs of complementors have to decide whether to merge and eventually bundle their products. Depending on the degree of competitive pressure in the market, either both pairs decide to merge (with or without bundling), or only one pair merges and bundles, while rivals remain independent. The latter case can very harmful for consumers as it brings surge in prices. We also consider the case in which one pair moves first. Interestingly, we find a parametric region where first movers merge but refrain from bundling, to not induce rivals to merge as well.

    Radio polarimetry of compact steep spectrum sources at sub-arcsecond resolution

    Aims - We report new Very Large Array polarimetric observations of Compact Steep-Spectrum (CSS) sources at 8.4, 15, and 23GHz. Methods - Using multi-frequency VLA observations we have derived sub-arcsecond resolution images of the total intensity, polarisation, and rotation measure (RM) distributions. Results heading - We present multi-frequency VLA polarisation observations of CSS sources. About half of the sources are point-like even at the resolution of about 0.1x0.1 arcseconds. The remaining sources have double or triple structure. Low values for the percentage of polarised emission in CSS sources is confirmed. On the average, quasars are more polarised than galaxies. A wide range of RM values have been measured. There are clear indications of very large RMs up to 5\,585 rad m**(-2). CSS galaxies are characterized by RM values that are larger than CSS quasars. The majority of the objects show very large values of RM. Conclusions - The available data on sub-arcsecond-scale rest-frame RM estimates for CSS sources show that these have a wide range of values extending up to about 36,000 rad m**(-2). RM estimates indicate an overall density of the magneto-ionic medium larger than classical radio sources.Comment: Accepted for publication by Astronomy & Astrophysic

    Compact steep-spectrum sources from the S4 sample

    We present the results of 5-GHz observations with the VLA A-array of a sample of candidate Compact Steep Spectrum sources (CSSs) selected from the S4 survey. We also estimate the symmetry parameters of high-luminosity CSSs selected from different samples of radio sources, and compare these with the larger sources of similar luminosity to understand their evolution and the consistency of the CSSs with the unified scheme for radio galaxies and quasars. The majority of CSSs are likely to be young sources advancing outwards through a dense asymmetric environment. The radio properties of CSSs are found to be consistent with the unified scheme, in which the axes of the quasars are observed close to the line of sight, while radio galaxies are observed close to the plane of the sky.Comment: accepted for publication in mnras; 8 pages, figure 1 with 21 images, and two additional figures; 2 table

    The role of virtual reality in built environment education

    This study builds upon previous research on the integration of Virtual Reality (VR) within the built environment curriculum and aims to investigate the role of VR and three-dimensional (3D) computer modelling on learning and teaching in a school of the built environment. In order to achieve this aim, a number of academic experiences were analysed to explore the applicability and viability of 3D computer modelling and VR into built environment subject areas. Although two-dimensional (2D) representations have been greatly accepted by built environment professions and education, 3D computer representations and VR applications, offering interactivity and immersiveness, are not yet widely accepted. The study attempts to understand the values and challenges of integrating visualisation technologies into built environment teaching and investigates tutors’ perceptions, opinions and concerns with respect to these technologies. The study reports on the integration process and considers how 3D computer modelling and VR technologies can combine with, and extend, the existing range of learning and teaching methods appropriate to different disciplines and programme areas

    VLBA polarimetric observations of the CSS quasar 3C147

    Aims. We report new VLBA polarimetric observations of the compact steep-spectrum (CSS) quasar 3C147 (B0538+498) at 5 and 8.4GHz. Methods. By using multifrequency VLBA observations, we derived milliarcsecond-resolution images of the total intensity, polarisation, and rotation measure distributions, by combining our new observations with archival data. Results. The source shows a one-sided structure, with a compact region, and a component extending about 200 mas to the south-west. The compact region is resolved into two main components with polarised emission, a complex rotation measure distribution, and a magnetic field dominated by components perpendicular to the source axis. Conclusions. By considering all the available data, we examine the possible location of the core component, and discuss two possible interpretations of the observed structure of this source: core-jet and lobe-hot spot. Further observations to unambiguously determine the location of the core would help distinguish between the two possibilities discussed here.Comment: 11 pages, 12 figure

    Paper Session I-A - Dielectric Properties of Martian Soil Simulant

    NASA’s Viking and Mars Pathfinder missions each used onboard instruments to determine the composition of the Martian soil at their respective landing sites. Those findings led to the development of a Martian soil simulant (JSC Mars-1) at NASA Johnson Space Center. However, in spite of the compositional studies conducted during those previous missions, no direct measurements were ever made of the dielectric properties of the Martian soil. Recently, instrumentation was developed at NASA Kennedy Space Center that enables investigations of the dielectric properties of granular materials to be conducted, including studies of Martian soil simulant. In the present study, a three-electrode system was used to measure the frequency response to an applied sinusoidal voltage of finely ground Martian soil simulant that was placed in a dry, low-vacuum environment. The data is shown to support a simple model of the granular system in which the resistances and capacitances of individual particles are connected in series by the resistance and capacitance of interparticle contacts

    Platform price parity clauses and market segmentation

    Price parity clauses (PPCs) are widely adopted by online platforms to force client sellers not to lower their prices elsewhere. We investigate under what conditions online travel agencies (OTAs) decide to apply PPCs, and how this affects hotels' listing decisions on OTAs. We find OTAs adopt PPCs when there is a sufficiently large competitive pressure in the market, either between OTAs, or between hotels (or both). PPCs allow OTAs to charge higher commission fees to hotels, which can respond by delisting from certain OTAs, thereby segmenting the market. We also find that consumers and hotels generally lose out with PPCs

    The mineral composition of the Martian soil was previously characterized during NASA\u27s two Viking missions, and also on the Mars Pathfinder mission. The recent NASA MER missions will also contribute to our understanding of the composition of the Martian soil, and they will also look for evidence to indicate the presence of water in the soil at some time in the distant past. While the ongoing Mars Glob al Surveyor orbiter mission has provided (indirect) evidence for the presence of water on Mars, there have not been any direct measurements of water in the Martian soil by any lander mission. We will describe a possible method that may be used to directly detect water in the Martian soil. We will present data obtained using an instrument that we developed at NASA Kennedy Space Center to measure the dielectric properties of JSC Mars- I Martian soil simulant under dry and moist conditions, and show that this is a direct method that can be used to detect the presence of water in soil
