Simultaneous intensive photometry and high resolution spectroscopy of Delta Scuti stars. V. The high--degree modes in the pulsational content of BV Circini
We discuss here the pulsation properties of the Scuti star BV
Circini on the basis of data obtained during a simultaneous photometric and
spectroscopic campaign in 1996 and a spectroscopic one in 1998, and taking also
advantage of the previous photometric observations by Kurtz (1981). Nine
pulsation modes were detected from photometry and thirteen from spectroscopy;
five of them are in common to both techniques. The spectroscopic data give
ample evidence of dramatic amplitude variations in some modes, in particular
the strongest spectroscopic mode in 1998 was not detectable in 1996 data. The
two dominant photometric modes (6.33 and 7.89 c\d) are observed on both
seasons. The typing of the modes was performed by means of a simultaneous model
fit of line profile and light variations. The 6.33 c\d photometric term is
probably the fundamental radial mode, while the 7.89 c\d is a nonradial mode
with mi different than 0. There are six high-degree prograde modes with an
azimuthal order m ranging from -12 to -14, and also a retrograde mode with m~7.
These modes combined with the identification of the 6.33 c\d mode allowed us to
estimate i~60 deg for the value of the inclination of the rotation axis. An
accurate evaluation of the main stellar physical parameters is also proposed as
a result of the pulsational analysis.Comment: 12 pages (in A&A style), 9 ps figures (Fig. 7 in colour) Accepted for

Coefficient of thermal expansion of nanostructured tungsten based coatings assessed by thermally induced substrate curvature method
The in plane coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and the residual stress
of nanostructured W based coatings are extensively investigated. The CTE and
the residual stresses are derived by means of an optimized ad-hoc developed
experimental setup based on the detection of the substrate curvature by a laser
system. The nanostructured coatings are deposited by Pulsed Laser Deposition.
Thanks to its versatility, nanocrystalline W metallic coatings,
ultra-nano-crystalline pure W and W-Tantalum coatings and amorphous-like W
coatings are obtained. The correlation between the nanostructure, the residual
stress and the CTE of the coatings are thus elucidated. We find that all the
samples show a compressive state of stress that decreases as the structure goes
from columnar nanocrystalline to amorphous-like. The CTE of all the coatings is
higher than the one of the corresponding bulk W form. In particular, as the
grain size shrinks, the CTE increases from 5.1 10 K for
nanocrystalline W to 6.6 10 K in the ultra-nano-crystalline
region. When dealing with amorphous W, the further increase of the CTE is
attributed to a higher porosity degree of the samples. The CTE trend is also
investigated as function of materials stiffness. In this case, as W coatings
become softer, the easier they thermally expand.Comment: The research leading to these results has also received funding from

Lectures on curvature flow of networks
We present a collection of results on the evolution by curvature of networks of planar curves. We discuss in particular the existence of a solution and the analysis of singularities
Atmospheric parameters and chemical properties of red giants in the CoRoT asteroseismology fields
A precise characterisation of the red giants in the seismology fields of the
CoRoT satellite is a prerequisite for further in-depth seismic modelling.
High-resolution FEROS and HARPS spectra were obtained as part of the
ground-based follow-up campaigns for 19 targets holding great asteroseismic
potential. These data are used to accurately estimate their fundamental
parameters and the abundances of 16 chemical species in a self-consistent
manner. Some powerful probes of mixing are investigated (the Li and CNO
abundances, as well as the carbon isotopic ratio in a few cases). The
information provided by the spectroscopic and seismic data is combined to
provide more accurate physical parameters and abundances. The stars in our
sample follow the general abundance trends as a function of the metallicity
observed in stars of the Galactic disk. After an allowance is made for the
chemical evolution of the interstellar medium, the observational signature of
internal mixing phenomena is revealed through the detection at the stellar
surface of the products of the CN cycle. A contamination by NeNa-cycled
material in the most massive stars is also discussed. With the asteroseismic
constraints, these data will pave the way for a detailed theoretical
investigation of the physical processes responsible for the transport of
chemical elements in evolved, low- and intermediate-mass stars.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 25 pages, 13 colour figures (revised

Search for low instability strip variables in the young open cluster NGC 2516
In this paper we revise and complete the photometric survey of the
instability strip of the southern open cluster NGC 2516 published by Antonello
and Mantegazza (1986). No variable stars with amplitudes larger than
were found. However by means of an accurate analysis based on a new statistical
method two groups of small amplitude variables have been disentangled: one with
periods (probably Scuti stars) and one with periods
. The position in the HR diagram and the apparent time-scale may
suggest that the stars of the second group belong to a recently discovered new
class of variables, named Dor variables. They certainly deserve
further study. We also present a comparison between the results of the
photometric survey and the available pointed ROSAT observations of this
cluster.Comment: 7 pages, 2 ps figures. Accepted for P.A.S.
Close-up of primary and secondary asteroseismic CoRoT targets and the ground-based follow-up observations
To optimise the science results of the asteroseismic part of the CoRoT
satellite mission a complementary simultaneous ground-based observational
campaign is organised for selected CoRoT targets. The observations include both
high-resolution spectroscopic and multi-colour photometric data. We present the
preliminary results of the analysis of the ground-based observations of three
targets. A line-profile analysis of 216 high-resolution FEROS spectra of the
delta Sct star HD 50844 reveals more than ten pulsation frequencies in the
frequency range 5-18 c/d, including possibly one radial fundamental mode (6.92
c/d). Based on more than 600 multi-colour photometric datapoints of the beta
Cep star HD180642, spanning about three years and obtained with different
telescopes and different instruments, we confirm the presence of a dominant
radial mode nu1=5.48695 c/d, and detect also its first two harmonics. We find
evidence for a second mode nu2=0.3017 c/d, possibly a g-mode, and indications
for two more frequencies in the 7-8 c/d domain. From Stromgren photometry we
find evidence for the hybrid delta Sct/gamma Dor character of the F0 star HD
44195, as frequencies near 3 c/d and 21 c/d are detected simultaneously in the
different filters.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, HELAS II International Conference
