Density and Distribution Function estimation through iterates of fractional Bernstein Operators

International audienceWe describe a method for distribution function and density estimation with Bern- stein polynomials. We take advantage of results about the eigenstructure of the Bernstein operator to re ne the Sevy's convergence acceleration method, based on iterates of this opera- tor; the original Sevy's algorithm is improved by introducing fractional operators. The proposed algorithm has better convergence properties than the classical one; the price to pay is a control- lable loss of the shape-preserving properties of the Bernstein approximation (monotonicity and positivity in the Density Estimation setting). Los cupos presentados como la solución son un engaño, fomentan el racismo y consideran al inmigrante no una persona sino un elemento de producción, un ciudadano de segunda categoría. La administración local sufre sus consecuencias; sin recursos, con manifestaciones de xenofobia y graves riesgos de ghetto en sus barrios periféricos, tienen que afrontar los efectos del problema global y luchar por una difícil integración social y ciudadana.Thanks to the absolute majority of the Partido Popular and the support of CIU we have lost the political and social consensus thas is indispensable for the law and the regulations governing foreigners to at least make it possible to lay the foundations for the integration of the paper-less immigrants who continue to arrive. The quotas submitted as the solution are a lie, they foster racism and look upon the immigrant as an element of production, not as a person, but a second-class citizen. Local goverments are suffering the consequences of this; bereft of resources, with outbreaks of xenophobia and a major risk of ghettos appearing in the peripheral neighbourhoods, they have to face up to the effects of the overall problem and fight for a difficult social and civic integration.

Application de l'Analyse des Correspondances Ordinales au suivi d'espèces végétales aquatiques.

International audienceLes communautés de macrophytes (algues et phanérogames), dont certaines espèces sont protégées, constituent un des indicateurs clés de l'état écologique des lagunes, tel que défini par la Directive Européenne Cadre sur l'Eau (DCE). Par ailleurs, la restauration de ces communautés de macrophytes, et des herbiers de Zostera en particulier, est l'un des objectifs principaux de la réhabilitation de l'Etang de Berre (Bouches-du-Rhône) portée par le Gipreb (Groupement d'intérêt public pour la réhabilitation de l'Etang de Berre). C'est pourquoi celui-ci met en oeuvre, depuis 1996, le suivi des principales espèces de macrophytes encore présentes dans l'étang. La densité de chaque espèce ou groupe d'espèces a été évaluée visuellement par des plongeurs le long de 31 transects (composés chacun de 20 segments de même longueur) répartis sur le pourtour de l'étang, et ce pendant 11 années. L'évaluation consiste en un codage en 6 modalités du taux de couverture du fonds par l'espèce. L'état annuel de la population de chaque espèce est finalement décrit par un tableau de type 6x20, croisant la densité avec la position : deux variables ordinales. La suite des 11 tableaux sera donc ici décrite via l'Analyse des Correspondances Ordinales de Beh (1997). Les résultats obtenus seront comparés avec ceux de l'AFC. Bibliographie : E. J. Iterated Bernstein operators for distribution function and density estimation: Balancing between the number of iterations and the polynomial degree

International audienceDespite its slow convergence, the use of the Bernstein polynomial approximation is becoming more frequent in Statistics, especially for density estimation of compactly supported probability distributions. This is due to its numerous attractive properties, from both an approximation (uniform shape-preserving approximation, etc.) and a statistical (bona fide estimation, low boundary bias, etc.) point of view. An original method for estimating distribution functions and densities with Bernstein polynomials is proposed, which takes advantage of results about the eigenstructure of the Bernstein operator to refine a convergence acceleration method. Furthermore, an original adaptative method for choosing the degree of the polynomial is worked out. The method is successfully applied to two data-sets which are important benchmarks in the field of Density Estimation
