Paper Session III-B - Journeys of the Hind: Space Education

    Get PDF
Young people, given the important facts of space exploration can make exciting journeys of the mind into events which will shape their future* In order to whet the appetite and create visions they should be prepared for real space journeys of the future. To accomplish this task, kindergarten through college curriculum must include all facets of space education. Teachers now and in the future must be able to stimulate the minds of their students for space education. To do this, space related teacher training programs need to be developed, expanded, and implemented. Currently, there are several on-going and successful teacher training programs. They include: NASA/National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) Educational Workshops for elementary and secondary math and science teachers; Space Academy for Educators in Huntsville, Alabama; and Teacher Symposiums sponsored by the National Space Club, Florida Committee. Several local space education programs that are in the planning stages include: Teaching the Future: Professional Educators Countdown to Learning, in Titusville, Florida; the Space Education and Research Center (SERC) at the University of Central Florida; and the Space Education Development Program (SEDP) of the Florida Space Grant Consortium

Copyright is held by the publisher. While the impact of the humanistic emblem tradition as embodied by Andrea Alciati’s work in Baltasar Gracián’s three-part novel El Criticón (1651, 1653 and 1657) is well documented, the allegorical novel’s relationship with the Jesuit emblem tradition has not been considered in detail. This essay explores the relationship between the emblem tradition of the Society of Jesus as developed in the Imago primi saeculi Societatis Iesu a Prouincia Flandro-Belgica eiusdem Societatis repraesentata (1640) and El Criticón. In engaging with the Jesuit emblem tradition, Gracián makes secular interpretations of established Jesuit imagery. Not only does this intertextual relationship enrich the interpretation of El Criticón, but also explains the Jesuit hierarchy’s negative reaction to the novel

This is the published version. Copyright 2005 Johns Hopkins University Press.Teaching Miguel de Cervantes's "El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha" in the undergraduate classroom can pose a myriad of linguistic and contextual challenges for students distanced from the text by the space of four hundred years. This paper details teaching strategies that incorporate linguistic activities, film, references to visual culture, and discussion to encourage deep learning on the part of undergraduate readers of Cervantes's classic novel

An Overview of the Pre-suppression Society of Jesus in Spain

In An Overview of the Pre-suppression Society of Jesus in Spain, Patricia W. Manning offers a survey of the Society of Jesus in Spain from its origins in Ignatius of Loyola’s early preaching to the aftereffects of its expulsion. Rather than nurture the nascent order, Loyola’s homeland was often ambivalent. His pre-Jesuit freelance sermonizing prompted investigations. The young Society confronted indifference and interference from the Spanish monarchy and outright opposition from other religious orders. This essay outlines the order’s ministerial and pedagogical activities, its relationship with women and with royal institutions, including the Spanish Inquisition, and Spanish members’ roles in theological debates concerning casuistry, free will, and the immaculate conception. It also considers the impact of Jesuits’ non-religious writings. Readership: Readers interested in the Society of Jesus, textual production by Jesuits, the Society’s ties to women, early modern theological polemics, and early modern Spain, including undergraduate and graduate students

Present Dogs, Absent Witches: Illustration and Interpretation of ‘El coloquio de los perros’

Copyright is held by the publisher.

Strategies for Reducing Employee Absenteeism in Retail Stores

    Get PDF
Employee absenteeism results in annual productivity losses of approximately $74 billion and reduced profits for some retail stores. The purpose of this single case study was to explore the strategies used to minimize absenteeism and increase productivity outcomes for organizational effectiveness at a retail store in northwest Florida. The targeted population included managers who had success with minimizing absenteeism and enhancing productivity in the retail store. Herzberg\u27s 2-factor theory was the conceptual framework, and semistructured interviews with 5 participants were the primary data collection technique. The secondary data sources included employee absence data and gross profit reports for 3 years (2014 through 2016), publicly displayed goal charts, and the absence policy that employees sign to document receipt and understanding of the policy. Methodological triangulation was established by analyzing and comparing data from the semistructured interviews with the company documents. Based on the NVivo coding tool used to identify word frequencies and thematic analysis, 3 primary themes emerged: leadership support and comradery, effective communication, and competitive compensation. The implications for social change included the potential to provide retail managers with the tools needed to decrease absenteeism, enhance productivity, increase organizational effectiveness, increase profitability in retail stores, and develop quality customer service to improve living conditions

Factors Affecting Laboratory Test Use and Prices

    Get PDF
The use of clinical laboratory tests has more than doubled during the past decade. Some observers of the health system feel that this growth is excessive and is a result of current payment systems. This article examines the effects of current reimbursement policies with regard to the use of laboratory tests and prices charged for tests. The results suggest the following: The method of financing medical care, including cost sharing and prepaid group practice arrangements, affects the volume of laboratory testing through the number of patient contacts with the medical care system rather than through the number of tests used per patient contact. Fee ceilings on physician time appear to be partially offset by higher test prices. Cost-based reimbursement for hospital services is associated with higher charges in hospital laboratories

Digital Resources for Targeted Mathematics Support

SPIRIT Maths (Students’ Perceptions Informing and Redefining Innovative Teaching of Mathematics in Higher Education) is a project that was established in Munster Technological University (MTU) to investigate students’ attitudes towards mathematics and to explore a more student-centred development of mathematics resources. One of the aims of the project was to create a collection of student-preferred digital materials with a view to improving student engagement, building students’ confidence in mathematics and helping students to succeed in their mathematics modules. The findings of a survey disseminated to first year students in MTU indicated that students would be most likely to use the resources if they were geared towards their specific module; to maximise impact, resources were developed for two modules, one in Engineering and one in Business, that are each taken by large numbers of students. The resources were integrated on the learning management system and are available to all MTU students taking a mathematics module. Three interlinked digital resources were developed: (1) a series of interactive self-assessment questions, (2) corresponding videos showing worked solutions and (3) an associated bank of practice questions developed using a digital tutor to provide instant feedback. It is hoped that the complementary resources will facilitate student learning through a combination of active learning, explicit instruction and the ready availability of the resources. This article describes these resources and how they were developed, and outlines how these are being promoted to students. We also report on the feedback received from a small number of students who tested the resources and discuss how to measure student engagement with the resources
