    Quasi-Two-Body Decays of Nonstrange Baryons

    We examine the decays of nonstrange baryons to the final states Δπ\Delta\pi, NρN\rho, NηN\eta, NηN\eta^\prime, NωN\omega, N1/2+(1440)πN1/2^+(1440)\pi, and Δ3/2+(1600)π\Delta3/2^+(1600)\pi, in a relativized pair-creation(3P0^3P_0) model which has been developed in a previous study of the NπN\pi decays of the same baryon states. As it is our goal to provide a guide for the possible discovery of new baryon states at CEBAF and elsewhere, we examine the decays of resonances which have already been seen in the partial-wave analyses, along with those of states which are predicted by the quark model but which remain undiscovered. The level of agreement between our calculation and the available widths from the partial-wave analyses is encouraging.Comment: 41 pages, CEBAF-TH-93-1

    Evidence for the fourth P11 resonance predicted by the constituent quark model

    It is pointed out that the third of five low-lying P11 states predicted by a constituent quark model can be identified with the third of four states in a solution from a three-channel analysis by the Zagreb group. This is one of the so-called ``missing'' resonances, predicted at 1880 MeV. The fit of the Zagreb group to the pi N -> eta N data is the crucial element in finding this fourth resonance in the P11 partial wave.Comment: 8 pages, revtex; expanded acknowledgement

    eta N S-wave scattering length in a three coupled channel, multiresonance, unitary model

    The S-wave scattering length for eta-N elastic scattering is extracted from the S-wave T-matrix in a three coupled channel, multiresonance unitary model. Results are compared with values already reported in literature which are obtained applying multichannel, but single resonance -- no background models. A dispersion among the previously published values of the real part of the S-wave scattering length is observed. We demonstrate that the reported spread originates from the strong sensitivity of the scattering length upon the small variation of the used input resonance parameters. In addition, we show that eta-N scattering length value obtained in single resonance -- no background models significantly increases if background term is added in a unitary way. We question the reliability of previously reported values based only on the single resonance -- no background models, and demonstrate that the value of the eta-N S-wave scattering length obtained in this publication is much more realistic because of the multiresonance and unitary approach.Comment: revtex, 20 pages + 3 figures (PostScript: gzip + uuencode) included, submitted to Phys.     Vector meson production and nucleon resonance analysis in a coupled-channel approach for energies m_N < sqrt(s) < 2 GeV I: pion-induced results and hadronic parameters

    We present a nucleon resonance analysis by simultaneously considering all pion- and photon-induced experimental data on the final states gamma N, pi N, 2 pi N, eta N, K Lambda, K Sigma, and omega N for energies from the nucleon mass up to sqrt(s) = 2 GeV. In this analysis we find strong evidence for the resonances P_{31}(1750), P_{13}(1900), P_{33}(1920), and D_{13}(1950). The omega N production mechanism is dominated by large P_{11}(1710) and P_{13}(1900) contributions. In this first part, we present the results of the pion-induced reactions and the extracted resonance and background properties with emphasis on the difference between global and purely hadronic fits.Comment: 54 pages, 26 figures, discussion extended, typos corrected, references updated, to appear in Phys.     P-wave excited baryons from pion- and photo-induced hyperon production

    We report evidence for N(1710)P11N(1710)P_{11}, N(1875)P11N(1875)P_{11}, N(1900)P13N(1900)P_{13}, Δ(1600)P33\Delta(1600)P_{33}, Δ(1910)P31\Delta(1910)P_{31}, and Δ(1920)P33\Delta(1920)P_{33}, and find indications that N(1900)P13N(1900)P_{13} might have a companion state at 1970\,MeV. The controversial Δ(1750)P31\Delta(1750)P_{31} is not seen. The evidence is derived from a study of data on pion- and photo-induced hyperon production, but other data are included as well. Most of the resonances reported here were found in the Karlsruhe-Helsinki (KH84) and the Carnegie-Mellon (CM) analyses but were challenged recently by the Data Analysis Center at GWU. Our analysis is constrained by the energy independent πN\pi N scattering amplitudes from either KH84 or GWU. The two πN\pi N amplitudes from KH84 or GWU, respectively, lead to slightly different πN\pi N branching ratios of contributing resonances but the debated resonances are required in both series of fits.Comment: 22 pages, 28 figures.     The N(1710)N^*(1710) as a resonance in the ππN\pi\pi N system

    We study the ππN\pi \pi N system by solving the Faddeev equations, for which the input two-body tt-matrices are obtained by solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation in the coupled channel formalism. The potentials for the ππ\pi \pi, πN\pi N sub-systems and their coupled channels are obtained from chiral Lagrangians, which have been earlier used to study resonances in these systems successfully. In this work, we find a resonance in the ππN\pi\pi N system with a mass of 1704i375/21704 - i 375/2 MeV and with quantum numbers I=1/2I=1/2, Jπ=1/2+J^\pi =1/2^+. We identify this state with the N(1710)N^*(1710). This peak is found where the energies of the ππ\pi \pi sub-system fall in the region of the σ\sigma resonance. We do not find evidence for the Roper resonance in our study indicating a more complex structure for this resonance, nor for any state with total isospin I=3/2I=3/2 or 5/25/2

    eta-prime Meson Production in Nucleon-Nucleon Collisions Near The Threshold

    The production of η\eta' mesons in the reactions ppppηpp\to pp\eta' and pnpnηpn\to pn\eta' at threshold-near energies is analyzed within a covariant effective meson-nucleon theory. The description of cross section and angular distributions of the available data in this kinematical region in the pppp channel is accomplished by including meson currents and nucleon currents with the resonances S11(1650)S_{11}(1650), P11(1710)P_{11}(1710) and P13(1720)P_{13}(1720). Predictions for the pnpn channel are given. The di-electron production from subsequent η\eta' Dalitz decay ηγγγe+e\eta' \to \gamma \gamma^* \to\gamma e^+e^- is also calculated and numerical results are presented for intermediate energy and kinematics of possible experiments with HADES, CLAS and KEK-PS

    The global atmospheric electrical circuit and climate

    Evidence is emerging for physical links among clouds, global temperatures, the global atmospheric electrical circuit and cosmic ray ionisation. The global circuit extends throughout the atmosphere from the planetary surface to the lower layers of the ionosphere. Cosmic rays are the principal source of atmospheric ions away from the continental boundary layer: the ions formed permit a vertical conduction current to flow in the fair weather part of the global circuit. Through the (inverse) solar modulation of cosmic rays, the resulting columnar ionisation changes may allow the global circuit to convey a solar influence to meteorological phenomena of the lower atmosphere. Electrical effects on non-thunderstorm clouds have been proposed to occur via the ion-assisted formation of ultra-fine aerosol, which can grow to sizes able to act as cloud condensation nuclei, or through the increased ice nucleation capability of charged aerosols. Even small atmospheric electrical modulations on the aerosol size distribution can affect cloud properties and modify the radiative balance of the atmosphere, through changes communicated globally by the atmospheric electrical circuit. Despite a long history of work in related areas of geophysics, the direct and inverse relationships between the global circuit and global climate remain largely quantitatively unexplored. From reviewing atmospheric electrical measurements made over two centuries and possible paleoclimate proxies, global atmospheric electrical circuit variability should be expected on many timescale

    Post-acute COVID-19 neuropsychiatric symptoms are not associated with ongoing nervous system injury

    A proportion of patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 experience a range of neuropsychiatric symptoms months after infection, including cognitive deficits, depression and anxiety. The mechanisms underpinning such symptoms remain elusive. Recent research has demonstrated that nervous system injury can occur during COVID-19. Whether ongoing neural injury in the months after COVID-19 accounts for the ongoing or emergent neuropsychiatric symptoms is unclear. Within a large prospective cohort study of adult survivors who were hospitalized for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection, we analysed plasma markers of nervous system injury and astrocytic activation, measured 6 months post-infection: neurofilament light, glial fibrillary acidic protein and total tau protein. We assessed whether these markers were associated with the severity of the acute COVID-19 illness and with post-acute neuropsychiatric symptoms (as measured by the Patient Health Questionnaire for depression, the General Anxiety Disorder assessment for anxiety, the Montreal Cognitive Assessment for objective cognitive deficit and the cognitive items of the Patient Symptom Questionnaire for subjective cognitive deficit) at 6 months and 1 year post-hospital discharge from COVID-19. No robust associations were found between markers of nervous system injury and severity of acute COVID-19 (except for an association of small effect size between duration of admission and neurofilament light) nor with post-acute neuropsychiatric symptoms. These results suggest that ongoing neuropsychiatric symptoms are not due to ongoing neural injury
