Gordon Valentine Manley and his contribution to the study of climate change: a review of his life and work
British climatologist and geographer, Gordon Manley (1902–1980), is perhaps best known for his pioneering work on climate variability in the UK, for establishing the Central England Temperature series and, for his pivotal role in demonstrating the powerful relationship between climate, weather, and culture in post-World War II Britain. Yet Manley made many contributions, both professional and popular, to climate change debates in the twentieth century, where climate change is broadly understood to be changes over a range of temporal and spatial scales rather than anthropogenic warming per se. This review first establishes how Manley's work, including that on snow and ice, was influenced by key figures in debates over climatic amelioration around the North Atlantic between 1920s and 1950s. His research exploring historical climate variability in the UK using documentary sources is then discussed. His perspectives on the relationship between climate changes and cultural history are reviewed, paying particular attention to his interpretation of this relationship as it played out in the UK. Throughout, the review aims to show Manley to be a fieldworker and an empiricist and reveals how he remained committed to rigorous scientific investigation despite changing trends within his academic discipline
Keys and Notes on the Buprestidae (Coleoptera) of Michigan
The distribution and dates of adult activity for Michigan buprestids are discussed. Keys to the genera and species, as well as host information are presented for 116 species and one subspecies. Information on collecting techniques, illustrations of genitalia of 14 species, and scanning electron micrographs of certain structures useful in species identification are presented and discussed. In addition, Pachyschelus confusus, a new species, is described from bush clover
The Cochlear Tuning Curve
The tuning curve of the cochlea measures how large an input is required to
elicit a given output level as a function of the frequency. It is a fundamental
object of auditory theory, for it summarizes how to infer what a sound was on
the basis of the cochlear output. A simple model is presented showing that only
two elements are sufficient for establishing the cochlear tuning curve: a
broadly tuned traveling wave, moving unidirectionally from high to low
frequencies, and a set of mechanosensors poised at the threshold of an
oscillatory (Hopf) instability. These two components suffice to generate the
various frequency-response regimes which are needed for a cochlear tuning curve
with a high slope
Intrinsic Localized Modes Observed in the High Temperature Vibrational Spectrum of NaI
Inelastic neutron measurements of the high-temperature lattice excitations in
NaI show that in thermal equilibrium at 555 K an intrinsic mode, localized in
three dimensions, occurs at a single frequency near the center of the spectral
phonon gap, polarized along [111]. At higher temperatures the intrinsic
localized mode gains intensity. Higher energy inelastic neutron and x-ray
scattering measurements on a room-temperature NaI crystal indicate that the
creation energy of the ground state of the intrinsic localized mode is 299 meV.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures Revised version; final versio
Anti-Kaon Induced Reactions on the Nucleon
Using a previously established effective Lagrangian model we describe
anti-kaon induced reactions on the nucleon. The dominantly contributing
channels in the cm-energy region from threshold up to 1.72 GeV are included (K
N, \pi \Sigma, \pi \Lambda). We solve the Bethe-Salpeter equation in an unitary

The energies and residues of the nucleon resonances N(1535) and N(1650)
We extract pole positions for the N(1535) and N(1650) resonances using two
different models. The positions are determined from fits to different subsets
of the existing , and data
and found to be 1515(10)--i85(15)MeV and 1660(10)--i65(10)MeV, when the data is
described in terms of two poles. Sensitivity to the choice of fitted data is
explored. The corresponding and residues of these poles
are also extracted.Comment: 9 page
Facilitation skills: the catalyst for increased effectiveness in consultant practice and clinical systems leadership
Consultant practitioner is the pinnacle of the clinical career ladder for all health care disciplines in the United Kingdom. Consultant nurse, midwife and health visitor roles build on the clinical credibility and expertise characteristic of advanced level practice, but also possess expertise in: clinical systems leadership and the facilitation of culture change, learning and development; advanced consultancy approaches, and research and evaluation to prioritise person-centred, safe and effective care across patient pathways.
This project aimed to help new and emerging consultants to become more effective in their role through a programme of support to develop their expertise.
Emancipatory action research, supported by claims, concerns and issues tool, derived from Stakeholder Evaluation, and other methods (active learning, action learning, collaborative workshops and individual tools e.g. qualitative 360 degree feedback and reflective reviews) comprised the supportive intervention which enabled participants to research their own practice.
The programme’s methodology and methods helped participants to: research their own practice; theorise from practice; grow the facilitation skills needed to develop and demonstrate their own effectiveness; foster the effectiveness of others and; transform practice culture. Greater effectiveness in their multiple roles was demonstrated, as was the impact of this on others, services and organisations.
The study concludes that the support programme augmented by the methodology, facilitation skills and the 10 principles derived from a concept analysis of work-based learning is central to achieving improved effectiveness and transformation of others, services and organisations. Theoretical insights at collective/community levels also resulted. Key recommendations are identified for commissioners, higher education and research
Mechanism of Pion Production in p Scattering at 1 GeV/nucleon
The one-pion and two-pion production in the p(alpha, alpha prime)X reaction
at an energy of E{alpha} = 4.2 GeV has been studied by simultaneous
registration of the scattered alpha particles and the secondary pion or proton.
The obtained results demonstrate that the inelastic alpha-particle scattering
on the proton at the energy of the experiment proceeds either through
excitation and decay of Delta resonance in the projectile or through excitation
in the target proton of the Roper resonance, which decays mainly on a nucleon
and a pion or a nucleon and a sigma meson - system of two pions in the isospin

Filaments as Possible Signatures of Magnetic Field Structure in Planetary Nebulae
We draw attention to the extreme filamentary structures seen in
high-resolution optical images of certain planetary nebulae. We determine the
physical properties of the filaments in the nebulae IC 418, NGC 3132, and NGC
6537, and based on their large length-to-width ratios, longitudinal coherence,
and morphology, we suggest that they may be signatures of the underlying
magnetic field. The fields needed for the coherence of the filaments are
probably consistent with those measured in the precursor circumstellar
envelopes. The filaments suggest that magnetic fields in planetary nebulae may
