On the occurrence of Parapenaeopsis stylifera in the stake net catches at Cochin bar mouth

    Get PDF
The stake net fishery study at the Cochin bar mouth revealed good quantities of the species have been noticed in the catches in certain months and the significant species is reported in this study.P. stylifera was contributed to 1.2, 1.4, 5.2 and 20.6% of the total penaeid prawn catches in February, May, June respectively during the year September, 1987. The percentage composition during 1988 in the months of February, July and September was 1.5, 0.4 and 31.3 respectively.Occurrence of P. stylifera which does in the stake net catches near the Cochin bar mouth during the monsoon and post-monsoon periods is interesting from the point of view of the local movement of the species and requires further studies based on intensive sampling

    Crab and lobster culture

    Get PDF
In India, crabs are landed as by-catch during commercial fishing operations and used mainly for domestic consumption. However, mud crab has become a highly priced commodity at present. India began to export small quantities of live crab to the Southeast Asian countries in the late eighties. This resulted in a sudden demand for higher production of this commodity and diverted the attention from fishing to farming. As a result, the export of live crab soared from just 36 tonnes in 1987-88 to about 725 tonnes in 1993-94 and over 3000 tonnes in 1995-96. The mud crab, also known as green crab or mangrove crab coming under the genus Scylla, is widely used for aquaculture in India and the Indo-west Pacific region

Seasonal fishery for Parapenaeopsis stylifera with comments on its possible recruitment along the coasts of Trivandrum, Kanyakumari and Thirunelveli Districts, South India

    Get PDF
Though the prawn, Parapenaeopsis stylifera does not contribute much to'" the fishery along the south-east coast of India, its abrupt seasonal appearance during July~November along the coasts of Thirunelveli, Kanyakumari and Trivandrum, which amounted to about 1,614 t during 1981-86 seasons, is of great interest from the point of view of its biology and behaviour. Of the two major trawling grounds off Thirunelveli. Manappad Madai sustains a good seasonal fishery for the species, the landing in 1978 being 163 t. However. fishery to the north of Manappad along the south-east coast is of lesser magnitude and does not show any seasonal pattern of occurrence. It is interesting to note that in comparison with the fishery for the species at Neendakara in the south-west coast, the fishery off Manappad shows higher size-frequency distribution with more mature specimens and the peak season occurs in the months of October-November. These facts possibly indicate the movement of the species towards south from Neendakara and to further north upto Manappad, round the Cape Comorin as recorded in the case of Penaeus indicus

Biochemical composition of the ovary and partial characterisation of yolk protein vitellin in Metapenaeus monoceros (Fabricius, 1798)

    Get PDF
Yolk protein vitellin in тАШspeckled shrimpтАЩ Metapenaeus monoceros was partially characterised employing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). There was an increase in the level of expression of vitellin in the ovary, with the advancement of maturation. The vitellin fraction was not expressed in immature and spent ovaries. Molecular weight of vitellin was 326 kDa. Confirmation of the vitellin band by selective staining showed that the yolk protein was a lipoglyco- carotenoprotein possessing a calcium moiety. A protein fraction with molecular weight 270 kDa, which was a lipoprotein, was expressed in ovaries of all maturity stages as well as in testis. The major biochemical constituents of mature yolk of M. monoceros on dry weight basis were protein (59.36┬▒1.18%), lipid (31.23┬▒2.98%) and carbohydrates (2.97┬▒0.81%). Carotenoids accounted for 0.70┬▒0.81% wet weight of yolk

Continuous culture of rotifers for larval rearing of marine prawns

    Get PDF
After continued harvesting, when the rotiter population declines due to their resorting to sexual reproduction, the culture is rejuvenated in the same pool by renewing 1/3 volume of water and by refertilising. This continous culture with frequent harvesting can be maintained for over 2 months
