    Large dynamic scissoring mode displacements coupled to band gap opening in the cubic phase of the methylammonium lead halide perovskites.

    Hybrid perovskites are a rapidly growing research area, having reached photovoltaic power conversion efficiencies of over 25 %. There is a increasing consensus that the structures of these materials, and hence their electronic structures, can not be understood purely from the time and space averaged crystal structures observable by conventional methods. We apply a symmetry-motivated analysis method to analyse X-ray pair distribution function data of the cubic phases of the hybrid perovskites MAPbX3X_3 (XX = I, Br, Cl). We demonstrate that, even in the cubic phase, the local structure of the inorganic components of MAPbX3X_3 (XX = I, Br, Cl), are dominated by scissoring type deformations of the PbX6X_6 octahedra. We find these modes to have a larger amplitude than equivalent distortions in the AA-site deficient perovskite ScF3_3 and demonstrate that they show a significant departure from the harmonic approximation. Calculations performed on an inorganic perovskite analogue, FrPbBr show that the large amplitudes of the scissoring modes are coupled to a dynamic opening of the electronic band gap. Finally, we use density functional theory calculations to show that the organic MA cations reorientate to accommodate the large amplitude scissoring modes.     Comparing direct oral anticoagulants and vitamin K antagonist use in morbidly obese patients with venous thromboembolism: A single center retrospective cohort study

    Abstract Introduction: Limited data exists on the safety and efficacy of direct‐acting oral anticoagulants (DOAC) use in morbidly obese patients with venous thromboembolism (VTE). Given the benefits of DOAC use over vitamin K antagonists (VKAs), in terms of monitoring requirements, and dietary and drug interactions, it is important to evaluate whether this is consistent in the higher risk for VTE recurrence morbidly obese group body mass index (BMI ≥ 40 kg/m2). Materials and methods: This retrospective, single‐center cohort study included patients with a BMI of at least 40 kg/m2 who were admitted to Emory University Hospital from 1st January 2012 to 31st May 2020 with acute VTE, and subsequently initiated on anticoagulation treatment with either DOAC or VKA (warfarin). Univariate and bivariate analyses were used to evaluate differences in demographics by treatment type and BMI. Multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression was used to assess the risk of VTE recurrence by type of treatment among morbidly obese patient subgroup. Results: There were 247 (11.8%) morbidly obese (≥ 40 kg/m2) patients who were more likely than non‐obese patients to be younger, female, and of non‐white race. Thirty percent of the study population (n=74) had a BMI >50 kg/m2. T ime‐to‐event analysis confirmed that the hazard of experiencing a recurrent thrombosis was not statistically significantly different among morbidly obese patients treated with a DOAC compared with VKA (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.28, confidence interval [CI] 0.07‐1.11, p = 0.07). Conclusions: This study aligns with previous literature and confirms that morbidly obese patients receiving DOAC or VKA have similar risks of recurrent VTE

    BRAF V600E expression and distribution in desmoplastic infantile astrocytoma/ganglioglioma

    AimsDesmoplastic infantile astrocytoma/ganglioglioma (DIA/DIG) is a rare primary neuroepithelial brain tumour typically affecting paediatric patients younger than 24 months. Knowledge about genetic alterations in DIA/DIG is limited. However, a previous study on BRAF V600E mutation in paediatric glioma revealed a BRAF mutation in one of two tested DIAs/DIGs. The limited number of cases in that study did not allow any conclusion about mutation frequency of BRAF in this tumour entity. MethodsWe collected a series of 18 DIAs/DIGs for testing BRAF V600E mutational status by BRAF V600E immunohistochemistry (clone VE1). Cases with sufficient DNA were tested for BRAF V600E mutation by pyrosequencing. ResultsThree out of 18 DIAs/DIGs presented with VE1 binding. A considerable proportion of BRAF V600E mutated tumour cells was detected in the cortical tumour component, whereas the pronounced leptomeningeal tumoural stroma was predominantly negative for VE1 binding. Pyrosequencing confirmed BRAF V600E mutation in two of three VE1-positive cases. ConclusionBRAF V600E mutation affects a subset of DIAs/DIGs and offers new therapeutic opportunities
