Considering the constraints of the lepton flavor violating (LFV) processes μ→3e\mu \rightarrow 3e and τ→3μ\tau\rightarrow3\mu on the LFV couplings Z′ℓiℓjZ'\ell_{i}\ell_{j}, in the contexts of the E6E_{6} models, the left-right (LR) models, the "alternative" left-right (ALR) models and the 331 models, we investigate the contributions of the extra gauge boson Z′Z' to the decay rates of the processes ℓi→ℓjνℓνℓ\ell_{i}\rightarrow\ell_{j}\nu_{\ell}\nu_{\ell}, τ→μP\tau\rightarrow\mu P and P→μeP\rightarrow \mu e with P=π0,ηP=\pi^{0},\eta and η′\eta '. Our numerical results show that the maximal values of the branching ratios for these processes are not dependent on the Z′Z' mass MZ′M_{Z'} at leader order. The extra gauge boson ZX′Z'_{X} predicted by the E6E_{6} models can make the maximum value of the branching ratio Br(τ→μνℓνℓ)Br(\tau\rightarrow\mu\nu_{\ell}\nu_{\ell}) reach 1.1×10−71.1\times10^{-7}. All Z′Z' models considered in this paper can produce significant contributions to the process τ→μP\tau\rightarrow\mu P. However, the value of Br(P→μe)Br(P\rightarrow\mu e) is far below its corresponding experimental upper bound.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures; matches published versio

A k-quantum nonlinear Jaynes-Cummings model for two trapped ions interacting with laser beams resonant to k-th red side-band of center-of-mass mode, far from Lamb-Dicke regime, has been obtained. The exact analytic solution showed the existence of quantum collapses and revivals of the occupation of two atoms.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure

Are the Kepler Near-Resonance Planet Pairs due to Tidal Dissipation?

    Get PDF
The multiple-planet systems discovered by the Kepler mission show an excess of planet pairs with period ratios just wide of exact commensurability for first-order resonances like 2:1 and 3:2. In principle, these planet pairs could have both resonance angles associated with the resonance librating if the orbital eccentricities are sufficiently small, because the width of first-order resonances diverges in the limit of vanishingly small eccentricity. We consider a widely-held scenario in which pairs of planets were captured into first-order resonances by migration due to planet-disk interactions, and subsequently became detached from the resonances, due to tidal dissipation in the planets. In the context of this scenario, we find a constraint on the ratio of the planet's tidal dissipation function and Love number that implies that some of the Kepler planets are likely solid. However, tides are not strong enough to move many of the planet pairs to the observed separations, suggesting that additional dissipative processes are at play.Comment: 20 pages, including 7 figures; accepted for publication in Ap

Degeneracy of Landau Level and Quantum Group SL_q(2)

We show that there is a kind of quantum group symmetry slq(2) sl_{q}(2) in the usual Landau problem and it is this quantum group symmetry that governs the degeneracy of Landau levels. We find that under the periodic boundary condition, the degree of degeneracy of Landau levels is finite, and it just equals the dimension of the irreducible cyclic representation of the quantum group slq(2) sl_{q}(2) .Comment: 10 pages, Preprint ( reprint ) of Nankai Institute of Mathematics. The University Archives has determined that this item is of continuing value to OSU's history.Man-houng Lin has been a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Modern History, Academia Sinica since 1990 and Professor of History at National Taiwan Normal University since 1991. In 2008, she was named president of Taiwan's Academia Historica, or State History Academy. Lin's main area of research focuses on treaty ports and modern China, native opium of late Qing China, currency crisis and early 19th century China, various empires and Taiwanese merchants' Great East Asian overseas economic networks, 1860-1961. She has published five books and about 70 papers in Chinese, English, Japanese and Korean in these areas. Her book, China Upside Down: Currency, Society and Ideologies, 1808-1856 (Harvard East Asian Series, 2006) links China's topsy-turvy change from the center of the East Asian order to its modern tragedy with the Latin American Independence Movement. Lin was mostly educated in Taiwan and received her Ph.D. in History and East Asian Languages from Harvard University in 1989.Ohio State University. Choosing Online Partners in the Virtual World: How Online Partners Characteristics Affect Online Dating

    Get PDF
This study used a deductive approach examining how online partners\u27 characteristics impacted online users in the following areas: (1) Appearance (including looks, height &weight), (2) Financial Prospects, (3) Age, (4) Self-disclosure, (5) values and beliefs. This study was focused on three important factors of online users: (1) Gender, (2) Age, and (3) Motive. Quantitative survey methods were used in this study. The research study used descriptive analysis, relationship analysis, Independent-Samples T-Test and ANOVA analysis to test the variables between groups, among groups, and between or among different variables. This research focused on 20 to 45 year olds because most people in this age group are involved in online dating services, and they had the basic technology (computer, Internet, online dating service) skills. The results show that different genders had different preferences in online partners\u27 weight and ambitions. The results show that age group 1 and group 2 had different preferences in online partners\u27 height and online partners\u27 value and belief. Age group 1 and group 3 had different preferences in online partners\u27 age. The results also show that different motives had different preferences regarding online partners height, financial prospects and age. There were four limitation of this study: (1) the researcher chose three popular chat rooms in Taiwan instead of all online dating websites. (2) There was no way to find out if the participants responded more than once because the survey was totally anonymous. (3) Time limit. (4) Participants in three specific online chat rooms were selected for inclusion in the sample, constituting a sample of convenience. Thus, the results may not be generalized to any online dating service or population. The contributions of this study are that there are no online dating research surveys conducted using quantitative methods that were not in English. This study was conducted in Taiwan using the Chinese language. In online dating research studies, most researchers used qualitative methods to analyze the topic. This paper used quantitative methods, sending the survey to online users in Taiwan. The results of this study in Taiwan and of those studies in the literature are very consistent

The Biological Evidence of the San-Pau-Chu People and Their Affinities

Austronesian is one of the major language groups spoken. It is believed that Taiwan, Indonesian (east of Wallace line), or Bismarck Archipelago is the starting point for Austronesian migrations. It is also suggested that prehistoric cultures of Taiwan were established by the ancestors of the modern Taiwanese indigenous populations, who are also Austronesian speakers. The goals of this project are to estimate biological relationships of the San-Pau-Chu (SPC) to other Asian populations (especially Polynesians) and to evaluate if Taiwan indeed plays a major role in the history of Austronesian migrations by using both dental morphological data (metric and nonmetric dental traits) and genetic evidence. This dissertation is divided into six chapters. In chapter one, models of Austronesian dispersal are introduced. Additionally, hypotheses and significance of this study are emphasized. In chapter two, the linguistic, archaeological, osteological and genetic evidence for different models is reviewed. Chapter three provides a brief introduction to Taiwanese cultural history, and describes archaeological sites at the Tainan Scientific-Based Industrial Park. In chapter four, a case study of dental variation from the SPC, Wu-Chien-Tsuo South (WCTS), and Nan-Kang-Li East (NKLE) sites are presented. In chapter five, genetic diversity and maternal ancestry in the SPC people is evaluated by using ancient DNA. Finally, in chapter six the biological evidence of the SPC people and their affinities is summarized. This research is the first study in Taiwan trying to combine both morphological and genetic evidence to explore the biological nature of one prehistoric population. Because the dental morphological study and ancient DNA analyses seem to suggest a Northern Asian origin for the SPC people, it is proposed here that approximately 2,500 BP, some prehistoric Taiwanese came from mainland East Asia. However, the WCTS people, contemporaries of SPC, show a closer relatedness with the Namu from the Hawaii. Therefore, a multiple set of models must be considered. Studies with larger samples sizes and wider range of archaeological sites in the future will also help to gain insights.\u2
