    Optimization of supercritical fluid extraction of phytosterol from roselle seeds with a central composite design model.

    Recovery of phytosterol from roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) seeds via supercritical carbon dioxide extraction modified with ethanol was investigated at pressures of 200–400 bar, temperatures from 40 to 80 ◦C and at supercritical fluid flow rates from 10 to 20 ml/min. It was found that an entrainer such as ethanol could enhance the solubility and extraction yield of roselle seed oil from the seed matrix, compared to values obtained using supercritical CO2. After a typical run (holding period of 30 min, continuous flow extraction of 3 h), the results indicate that the oil recovery was optimal with a recovery of 108.74% and a phytosterol composition of 7262.80mgkg−1 at relatively low temperature of 40 ◦C, a high pressure of 400 bar and at a high supercritical fluid flow rate of 20 ml/min in the presence of 2 ml/min EtOH as entrainer. The solubility of roselle seed oil increased with temperature at the operating pressures of 200, 300 and 400 bar.     Developing a performance evaluation scheme for engineering facilities in commercial buildings: state-of-the-art review

    Various post-occupancy evaluation schemes have been introduced for assessing building performance but one tailored for large-scale commercial buildings remains to be seen. Intended to develop a scheme for evaluating the performance of engineering facilities in existing commercial buildings, a multi-stage study was carried out in a dense-built metropolis – Hong Kong. Reported here is the part of work based on an extensive literature review. Considering the characteristics of relevant evaluation schemes, the requirements for useful performance evaluation and the criteria for selecting key performance indicators (KPIs), an integrated process-hierarchy model was formed for identifying applicable indicators for the intended scheme. A total of 71 indicators, classified into five categories: (i) physical, (ii) financial, (iii) task and equipment related, (iv) environmental, and (v) health, safety and legal, were identified. Their representations and their empirical applications, which are helpful for the strategic management of existing buildings, are also described

    From resistance to acceptance: developing health task measures to boost mHealth adoption among older adults: mixed-methods approach and innovation resistance

    Purpose: There are two main objectives in this study. First, we aim to develop a set of constructs for health task management support (HTMS) features to evaluate which health-related tasks are supported by mobile health application (mHealth app) functions. Second, drawing on innovation resistance theory (IRT), we examine the impacts of the newly developed HTMS dimensions on perceived usefulness, alongside other barrier factors contributing to technology anxiety. Design/methodology/approach: Using a mixed-method research design, this research seeks to develop new measurement scales that reflect how mHealth apps support older adults’ health-related needs based on interviews. Subsequently, data were collected from older adults and exploratory factor analysis was used to confirm the validity of the new scales. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was used to analyze survey data from 602 older adults. Findings: The PLS-SEM results indicated that medical management task support, dietary task support, and exercise task support were positively associated with perceived usefulness, while perceived complexity and dispositional resistance to change were identified as antecedents of technology anxiety. Perceived usefulness and technology anxiety were found to positively and negatively influence adoption intention, respectively. Originality/value: This study enriches the information systems literature by developing a multidimensional construct that delineates how older adults’ health-related needs can be supported by features of mHealth apps. Drawing on IRT, we complement the existing literature on resistance to innovation by systematically examining the impact of five types of barriers on technology anxiety

    Universality class of the restricted solid-on-solid model with hopping

    We study the restricted solid-on-solid (RSOS) model with finite hopping distance l0l_{0}, using both analytical and numerical methods. Analytically, we use the hard-core bosonic field theory developed by the authors [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 62}, 7642 (2000)] and derive the Villain-Lai-Das Sarma (VLD) equation for the l0=l_{0}=\infty case which corresponds to the conserved RSOS (CRSOS) model and the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation for all finite values of l0l_{0}. Consequently, we find that the CRSOS model belongs to the VLD universality class and the RSOS models with any finite hopping distance belong to the KPZ universality class. There is no phase transition at a certain finite hopping distance contrary to the previous result. We confirm the analytic results using the Monte Carlo simulations for several values of the finite hopping distance.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure

    Immersive time in the metaverse and visits to the physical world: why not both? A holistic customer engagement framework

    Purpose: Through the theoretical lenses of media richness, perceived realism and customer engagement, this study aims to investigate the mechanisms that promote customer engagement in metaverse-mediated environments in the meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) context, as well as the impact of customer engagement on customers’ metaverse usage intensity and future visit intention. Design/methodology/approach: A survey of customers who have experience with metaverse-mediated MICE activities was conducted. Data from 267 respondents were analysed using partial least squares-structural equation modelling and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to test our research framework. Findings: Media richness dimensions, including multiple cues, immediate feedback and personal focus, were found to enhance perceived metaverse realism, which in turn affects the dimensions of customer engagement, leading to customers’ metaverse usage intensity and future visit intention. The fsQCA analysis identifies three configurations that lead to high event visit intention. Practical implications: This research helps developers and marketers better understand how rich media contents create realistic experiences in the metaverse, aiding them to devise strategies for customer engagement and improve resource allocation. Originality/value: Despite its potentially revolutionary impacts, empirical studies on the mechanisms driving customer engagement in the metaverse and its effects are scarce. This study contributes by revealing the multiple-phase mechanism of the customer engagement journey in the metaverse-mediated MICE context. By expanding the media richness theory into this area, our study provides new insights by illustrating how media richness dimensions create multisensory experiences and real-time interactions, enhancing perceived metaverse realism and customer engagement. It also addresses the debate on whether metaverse-mediated events substitute or complement real-life events

    Derivation of continuum stochastic equations for discrete growth models

    We present a formalism to derive the stochastic differential equations (SDEs) for several solid-on-solid growth models. Our formalism begins with a mapping of the microscopic dynamics of growth models onto the particle systems with reactions and diffusion. We then write the master equations for these corresponding particle systems and find the SDEs for the particle densities. Finally, by connecting the particle densities with the growth heights, we derive the SDEs for the height variables. Applying this formalism to discrete growth models, we find the Edwards-Wilkinson equation for the symmetric body-centered solid-on-solid (BCSOS) model, the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation for the asymmetric BCSOS model and the generalized restricted solid-on-solid (RSOS) model, and the Villain--Lai--Das Sarma equation for the conserved RSOS model.     Immune-modulation by polyclonal IgM treatment reduces atherosclerosis in hypercholesterolemic apoE−/− mice

    AbstractObjectiveGamma-globulin treatment reduces experimental atherosclerosis by modulating immune function; however the effect of IgM on atherosclerosis is not known. We investigated the effect of serum-derived, non-immune polyclonal IgM (Poly-IgM) on atherosclerosis in mice with advanced disease and also assessed its immune-modulatory effects.Methods and resultsAortic atherosclerosis was assessed in apoE−/− mice fed atherogenic diet starting at 6 weeks of age. In addition, mice were also subjected to perivascular cuff injury to the carotid artery at 25 weeks of age to induce accelerated atherosclerosis. At the time of injury, the mice were treated weekly with a commercially available Poly-IgM (0.4mg/mouse) or PBS for 4 weeks and euthanized at 29 weeks of age. Poly-IgM reduced aortic atherosclerosis, and reduced lesion size in the aortic sinus and injured carotid artery, without significant changes in serum cholesterol levels. Poly-IgM treatment was associated with increased anti-oxLDL IgG titers and a reduction in the % splenic CD4+ T cells compared to controls. The splenic CD4+ T cell cultured from the Poly-IgM treated mice had reduced proliferation in vitro compared with controls.ConclusionPoly-IgM treatment reduced aortic and accelerated carotid atherosclerosis in apoE−/− mice in association with increased anti-oxLDL IgG titers, and reduced number and proliferative function of splenic CD4+ T cells. Our study identifies a novel athero-protective and immunomodulatory role for non-immune polyclonal IgM

    Suitability of databases in the Asia-Pacific for collaborative monitoring of vaccine safety

    Introduction: Information regarding availability of electronic healthcare databases in the Asia-Pacific region is critical for planning vaccine safety assessments particularly, as COVID-19 vaccines are introduced. This study aimed to identify data sources in the region, potentially suitable for vaccine safety surveillance. This manuscript is endorsed by the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology (ISPE). Methods: Nineteen countries targeted for database reporting were identified using published country lists and review articles. Surveillance capacity was assessed using two surveys: a 9-item introductory survey and a 51-item full survey. Survey questions related to database characteristics, covariate and health outcome variables, vaccine exposure characteristics, access and governance, and dataset linkage capability. Other questions collated research/regulatory applications of the data and local publications detailing database use for research. Results: Eleven databases containing vaccine-specific information were identified across 8 countries. Databases were largely national in coverage (8/11, 73%), encompassed all ages (9/11, 82%) with population size from 1.4 to 52 million persons. Vaccine exposure information varied particularly for standardized vaccine codes (5/11, 46%), brand (7/11, 64%) and manufacturer (5/11, 46%). Outcome data were integrated with vaccine data in 6 (55%) databases and available via linkage in 5 (46%) databases. Data approval processes varied, impacting on timeliness of data access. Conclusions: Variation in vaccine data availability, complexities in data access including, governance and data release approval procedures, together with requirement for data linkage for outcome information, all contribute to the challenges in building a distributed network for vaccine safety assessment in the Asia-Pacific and globally. Common data models (CDMs) may help expedite vaccine safety research across the region
