    On the second-order zero differential spectra of some power functions over finite fields

    Boukerrou et al. (IACR Trans. Symmetric Cryptol. 2020(1), 331-362) introduced the notion of Feistel Boomerang Connectivity Table (FBCT), the Feistel counterpart of the Boomerang Connectivity Table (BCT), and the Feistel boomerang uniformity (which is the same as the second-order zero differential uniformity in even characteristic). FBCT is a crucial table for the analysis of the resistance of block ciphers to power attacks such as differential and boomerang attacks. It is worth noting that the coefficients of FBCT are related to the second-order zero differential spectra of functions. In this paper, by carrying out certain finer manipulations of solving specific equations over the finite field Fpn\mathbb{F}_{p^n}, we explicitly determine the second-order zero differential spectra of some power functions with low differential uniformity, and show that our considered functions also have low second-order zero differential uniformity. Our study pushes further former investigations on second-order zero differential uniformity and Feistel boomerang differential uniformity for a power function FF

    Several new infinite classes of 0-APN power functions over F2n\mathbb{F}_{2^n}

    The investigation of partially APN functions has attracted a lot of research interest recently.     In-depth analysis of S-boxes over binary finite fields concerning their differential and Feistel boomerang differential uniformities

    Substitution boxes (S-boxes) play a significant role in ensuring the resistance of block ciphers against various attacks. The Difference Distribution Table (DDT), the Feistel Boomerang Connectivity Table (FBCT), the Feistel Boomerang Difference Table (FBDT) and the Feistel Boomerang Extended Table (FBET) of a given S-box are crucial tools to analyze its security concerning specific attacks. However, the results on them are rare. In this paper, we investigate the properties of the power function F(x):=x2m+1−1F(x):=x^{2^{m+1}-1} over the finite field \gf_{2^n} of order 2n2^n where n=2mn=2m or n=2m+1n=2m+1 (mm stands for a positive integer). As a consequence, by carrying out certain finer manipulations of solving specific equations over \gf_{2^n}, we give explicit values of all entries of the DDT, the FBCT, the FBDT and the FBET of the investigated power functions. From the theoretical point of view, our study pushes further former investigations on differential and Feistel boomerang differential uniformities for a novel power function FF. From a cryptographic point of view, when considering Feistel block cipher involving FF, our in-depth analysis helps select FF resistant to differential attacks, Feistel differential attacks and Feistel boomerang attacks, respectively

    Comparative Analysis of the Complete Mitochondrial Genomes for Development Application

    This present research work reports the comparative analysis of the entire nucleotide sequence of mitochondrial genomes of Serranochromis robustus and Buccochromis nototaenia and phylogenetic analyses of their protein-coding genes in order to establish their phylogenetic relationship within Cichlids. The mitochondrial genomes of S. robustus and B. nototaenia are 16,583 and 16,580 base pairs long, respectively, including 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 2 ribosomal RNA genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, and one control region (D-loop) which is 888 and 887 base pairs long, respectively, showing the same gene order and identical number of gene or regions with other well-elucidated mitogenomes of Cichlids. However, with exception of cytochrome-c oxidase subunit-1 (COX-1) gene, all the identified PCGs were initiated by ATG-codons. Structurally, 11 tRNA genes in B. nototaenia species and 9 tRNA genes in S. robustus species, folded into typical clover-leaf secondary structure created by the regions of self-complementarity within tRNA. All the 22 tRNA genes in both species lack variable loop. Moreover, 28 genes which include 12-protein-coding genes are encoded on the H-strand and the remaining 9 genes including one protein-coding gene are encoded on the L-strand. Thirteen sequences of concatenated mitochondrial protein-coding genes were aligned using MUSCLE, and the phylogenetic analyses performed using maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference showed that S. robustus and B. nototaenia had a broad phylogenetic relationship. These results may be a useful tool in resolving higher-level relationships in organisms and a useful dataset for studying the evolution of the Cichlidae mitochondrial genome, since Cichlids are well-known model species in the study of evolutionary biology, because of their extreme morphological, biogeographical, parental care behavior for eggs and larvae and phylogenetic diversities

    Accuracy of Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) for screening to detect major depression: individual participant data meta-analysis

    Objective: To determine the accuracy of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) for screening to detect major depression. Design: Individual participant data meta-analysis. Data sources: Medline, Medline In-Process and Other Non-Indexed Citations, PsycINFO, and Web of Science (January 2000-February 2015). Inclusion criteria: Eligible studies compared PHQ-9 scores with major depression diagnoses from validated diagnostic interviews. Primary study data and study level data extracted from primary reports were synthesized. For PHQ-9 cut-off scores 5-15, bivariate random effects meta-analysis was used to estimate pooled sensitivity and specificity, separately, among studies that used semistructured diagnostic interviews, which are designed for administration by clinicians; fully structured interviews, which are designed for lay administration; and the Mini International Neuropsychiatric (MINI) diagnostic interviews, a brief fully structured interview. Sensitivity and specificity were examined among participant subgroups and, separately, using meta-regression, considering all subgroup variables in a single model. Results: Data were obtained for 58 of 72 eligible studies (total n=17 357; major depression cases n=2312). Combined sensitivity and specificity was maximized at a cut-off score of 10 or above among studies using a semistructured interview (29 studies, 6725 participants; sensitivity 0.88, 95% confidence interval 0.83 to 0.92; specificity 0.85, 0.82 to 0.88). Across cut-off scores 5-15, sensitivity with semistructured interviews was 5-22% higher than for fully structured interviews (MINI excluded; 14 studies, 7680 participants) and 2-15% higher than for the MINI (15 studies, 2952 participants). Specificity was similar across diagnostic interviews. The PHQ-9 seems to be similarly sensitive but may be less specific for younger patients than for older patients; a cut-off score of 10 or above can be used regardless of age.. Conclusions: PHQ-9 sensitivity compared with semistructured diagnostic interviews was greater than in previous conventional meta-analyses that combined reference standards. A cut-off score of 10 or above maximized combined sensitivity and specificity overall and for subgroups. Registration: PROSPERO CRD42014010673

    Probability of major depression diagnostic classification using semi-structured vs. fully structured diagnostic interviews

    Background: Different diagnostic interviews are used as reference standards for major depression classification in research. Semi-structured interviews involve clinical judgement, whereas fully structured interviews are completely scripted. The Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI), a brief fully structured interview, is also sometimes used. It is not known whether interview method is associated with probability of major depression classification. Aims: To evaluate the association between interview method and odds of major depression classification, controlling for depressive symptom scores and participant characteristics. Method: Data collected for an individual participant data meta-analysis of Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) diagnostic accuracy were analyzed. Binomial Generalized Linear Mixed Models were fit. Results: 17,158 participants (2,287 major depression cases) from 57 primary studies were analyzed. Among fully structured interviews, odds of major depression were higher for the MINI compared to the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) [OR (95% CI) = 2.10 (1.15-3.87)]. Compared to semi-structured interviews, fully structured interviews (MINI excluded) were non-significantly more likely to classify participants with low-level depressive symptoms (PHQ-9 scores 6) as having major depression [OR (95% CI) = 3.13 (0.98-10.00)], similarly likely for moderate-level symptoms (PHQ-9 scores 7-15) [OR (95% CI) = 0.96 (0.56-1.66)], and significantly less likely for high-level symptoms (PHQ-9 scores 16) [OR (95% CI) = 0.50 (0.26-0.97)]. Conclusions: The MINI may identify more depressed cases than the CIDI, and semi- and fully structured interviews may not be interchangeable methods, but these results should be replicated

    Reactive oxygen species and nitric oxide scavenging nanoparticles alleviating rheumatoid arthritis through adjusting the seeds and growing soils

    Normalizing inflamed soils including reactive oxygen species (ROS), nitric oxide (NO), cell-free DNA, and regulating inflammation-related seeds such as macrophages, neutrophils, fibroblasts, represent a promising strategy to maintain synovial tissue homeostasis for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treatment. Herein, ROS scavenging amphiphilic block copolymer PEGylated bilirubin and NO-scavenging PEGylated o-phenylenediamine were fabricated to self-assemble into a dually responsive nanoparticle loaded with JAK inhibitor notopterol (Not@BR/oPDA-PEG, NBOP NPs). The simultaneous ROS and NO depletion combined with JAK-STAT pathway inhibition could not only promote M2 polarization to reduce further ROS and NO generation, but also decrease cytokines and chemokines to prevent immune cell recruitment. Specifically, NBOP NPs responded to high level ROS and NO, and disintegrated to release notopterol in inflamed joints as the hydrophobic heads BR and oPDA were transformed into hydrophilic ones. The released notopterol could inhibit the JAK-STAT pathway of inflammatory cells to reduce the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines. This strategy represented an effective way to regulate RA soils and seeds through breaking the positive feedback loop of inflammation aggravation, achieving an excellent anti-RA efficacy in a collagen-induced arthritis rat model. Taken together, our work offered a reference to adjust RA soils and seeds for enhanced RA treatment

    Response of Soil Environment and Microbial Community Structure to Different Ratios of Long-Term Straw Return and Nitrogen Fertilizer in Wheat–Maize System

    To determine the reasonable rate of straw return and nitrogen (N) fertilizer use which may maintain soil ecosystem health, we analyzed their soil microbial biomass and composition in a 10-year field experiment with different rates of straw return (50%, 100%) and N fertilizer (270, 360, 450, 540 kg N ha−1 yr−1) by phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis and high-throughput sequencing. A rate of 50% straw return combined with 450 or 540 kg N ha−1 yr−1 effectively increased the soil available nutrient contents mainly for total nitrogen, available potassium, and available phosphorus. Total PLFAs indicated that straw return combined with N fertilizer promoted soil microbial growth and increased biomass. A rate of 100% straw return with 450 kg N ha−1 yr−1 was not conducive to the stability of the soil ecosystem according to the ratio of fungi to bacteria (F:B). The similar rate of straw returning and the similar level of nitrogen fertilizer application will be divided into the same cluster using a heatmap analysis. Some saprophytic fungi or pathogens became the dominant fungi genera, such as Gibberella, Sarocladium, Pseudallescheria, and Mycosphaerella, in the treatments with 100% straw returning combining higher N fertilizer (>450 kg ha−1 yr−1 yr−1 added). The relative abundances of some heavy metal-tolerant bacteria, such as those in Proteobacteria and Chlorobi, increased in the soils in the 100% straw return treatments. Therefore, the combined application of 100% straw returning and higher N fertilizer (>450 kg ha−1 yr−1) added long-term was not appropriate for soil health, which will lead to the risk of disease and pollution in soil

    Promoting positive parenting and mental wellbeing in Hong Kong Chinese parents: A pilot cluster randomised controlled trial.

    ObjectiveEffective and brief positive parenting interventions could be adopted widely, but evidence is limited. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a positive parenting programme in Hong Kong Chinese parents.MethodsWe conducted a pilot cluster randomised controlled trial in 2017 in 144 Hong Kong Chinese parents (84.7% women, mean age 42.5 [SD 5.87] years) of school-age children (mean age 10.9 [2.8] years) in 4 family service centres (clusters). The intervention included two 2-hour interactive talks (4 hours in total). The contents covered skills of giving praise, showing appreciation and playing enjoyable family games. The control group was offered the intervention after all the data were collected. Praise, appreciation and enjoyment related behaviours were measured as primary outcomes at baseline, 1 month and 3 months. The secondary outcomes were subjective happiness, wellbeing, personal health and happiness, family health, family happiness and harmony, and family relationship. After the completion of all assessments, five focus group discussions with the parents and four individual in-depth interviews with community service providers were conducted to explore their experiences.ResultsCompared with the control group (n = 69), the intervention group (n = 75) showed greater positive changes in appreciation and enjoyment at 3 months with small effect sizes (d = 0.42 and 0.32, respectively), and greater improvements in the secondary outcomes at 3 months with small effect sizes (d: 0.29-0.48). In the focus groups, the parents reported more praise to their children, better temper control, more focus on their children's strengths and better family relationships. According to the service providers, most of the parents enjoyed the activities.ConclusionsThe brief intervention in community settings with the engagement of community service providers has shown preliminary effectiveness in promoting positive parenting and mental wellbeing of Hong Kong Chinese parents.Trial registrationThe authors confirm that all ongoing and related trials for this intervention are registered.
