Producción de lípidos funcionales y antioxidantes naturales a partir de semillas de maracuyá
The wild passion fruit species Passiflora setacea, Passiflora alata, and Passiflora tenuifila are native to the Brazilian biomass. The seed waste generated from the extraction of passion fruit juice contains functional polyunsaturated fatty acids and phenolic compounds. The aims of this study were to obtain lipids and natural antioxidants from passion fruit seeds. Passion seed oils were extracted using a lab-scale continuous press and their oxidative stability was evaluated using the Rancimat® method. Higher antioxidant extract capacity was observed when using an ethanol-water solution (70:30) at 45 ºC. In these cases, the total phenolic contents expressed as gallic acid equivalents from P. setacea, P. alata, and P. tenuifila cakes were approximately 1800, 600 and 900 mg·100g−1 of extract. Induction periods increased up to two-fold when adding these extracts to their respective seed oil. Therefore, passion fruit seed extract can contribute to increasing the oxidative stability of polyunsaturated oils.Las especies de maracuyá silvestre Passiflora setacea, Passiflora alata y Passiflora tenuifila son nativas de la biomasa brasileña. El desecho de semillas generado después de la extracción del jugo de maracuyá contiene ácidos grasos poliinsaturados funcionales y compuestos fenólicos. Los objetivos de este estudio fueron obtener lípidos y antioxidantes naturales de las semillas de maracuyá. Los aceites de semillas de la pasión se extrajeron usando una prensa continua a escala de laboratorio y su estabilidad oxidativa se evaluó usando el método Rancimat®. Se observó una mayor capacidad antioxidante del extracto cuando se usó una solución de etanol-agua (70:30) a 45 ºC. En estos casos, el contenido fenólico total expresado como equivalentes de ácido gálico de las tortas de P. setacea, P. alata y P. tenuifila fue de aproximadamente 1800, 600 y 900 mg·100g−1 de extracto. Los períodos de inducción aumentaron hasta dos veces al agregar estos extractos a sus respectivos aceites de semillas. Por lo tanto, el extracto de semillas de maracuyá puede contribuir a aumentar la estabilidad oxidativa de los aceites poliinsaturados
Continuing medical education and evidence-based clinical pathways. Training emergency health workers in Latium, Italy
Background: In recent decades, studies that evaluate training programmes have shown that continuing education for physicians is not very effective in improving performance and behavioural changes. One of our goals was to create a Continuing Medical Education Programme (CMEP) that would result in changing the behaviour of health professionals. In early 2005, a new CMEP was offered to emergency medical services and emergency room professionals to introduce an Emergency Critical Pathway (ECP) for the management of acute stroke patients. This paper illustrates the main characteristics of the educational model and the strategies and activities adopted to realize it. Methods: The training programme was planned and organized applying the concepts and tools of experiential learning, It was organised in three successive phases: 1.) interviews with health professionals to identify their learning ne-eds; 2) training the ECP coordinators/facilitators in a residential setting; and 3) on-site training in small groups of health professionals (6-8), led by a coordinator/facilitator. Results: The CME involved 324 emergency health professionals, Participants positively evaluated both the educational programme and the clinical indications of the protocols. Over six months of the ECP training, health professionals treated 657 stroke patients: 153 (23.3%) were transferred to the stroke unit where 15 (9.8%) were thrombolysed. In the same period of the previous year, the professionals treated 638 patients: 99 (15.5%) were transferred to the stroke unit and no patients were thrombolysed. Conclusion: The application of the new educational methodology has contributed to improved management of stroke patients in Latium.</p

Ajustes de curvas de crescimento de um rebanho de bovinos da raça Nelore mocho.
Objetivou-se determinar o modelo mais adequado para descrever o crescimento de bovinos Nelore Mocho. Os modelos não lineares de Brody, Von Bertalanffy, Gompertz e Logístico foram ajustados a dados peso-idade do nascimento aos 750 dias de idade. A qualidade do ajuste dos modelos foi feita por meio do quadrado médio do resíduo, do coeficiente de determinação ajustado, do erro de predição e do desvio médio absoluto dos resíduos. As estimativas médias para os parâmetros A e k foram 543,40 kg e 0,00138 % dia-1; 402,00 kg e 0,00323 % dia-1; 378,00 kg e 0,00410 % dia-1; e 346,00 kg e 0,00657 % dia-1, para os Modelos de Brody, Von Bertalanffy, Gompertz e Logístico respectivamente. Dentro do período analisado, o modelo de Brody é o mais indicado para representar a curva de crescimento média e também para ser utilizado em estudos do crescimento de animais da raça Nelore Mocho
Abordagem multivariada das inter-relações entre características de crescimento e consumo alimentar de bovinos da raça Nelore mocho
Objetivou-se analisar os inter-relacionamentos fenotípicos existentes entre características de crescimento e consumo alimentar de bovinos da raça Nelore mocho. O experimento foi conduzido no confinamento da Empresa Guaporé Agropecuária. As características analisadas foram: Peso vivo inicial; Peso vivo final; Ganho em peso diário; Consumo de matéria seca; Eficiência alimentar; Consumo Alimentar Residual e conversão alimentar. Foram realizadas analises uni e multivariadas a fim de se entender os inter-relacionamentos entre estas características. Não foi evidenciada estimativa de correlação significativa entre características de crescimento e consumo alimentar residual. Observou-se que quanto menor o consumo alimentar residual maior a eficiência alimentar dos animais analisados. Assim, ao se utilizar consumo alimentar residual como critério de seleção, é possível selecionar animais nutricionalmente mais eficientes sem comprometimento do crescimento e tamanho adulto
Sensory analysis and consumers studies of açai beverage after thermal, chlorine and ozone treatments of the fruits.
Açai is a fruit of the Amazon region consumed as beverage, pulp, and other products, being exported to many countries because of its peculiar characteristic flavor and antioxidant power potential. For Açai there is still a need for improving sanitizing processes, making it more effective, reducing the microbiological contamination without affecting either the physicochemical and sensory characteristics of final product. Thermal (blanching at 80 and 90C) and nonthermal treatments (150 mg/L-1 chlorination and 4 mg/L-1 aqueous ozonation) were applied to fruits in order to evaluated their anthocyanins content and also processed beverages for coloring, sensory characteristics, and their purchase intentions. Ozonated fruits exhibited less anthocyanins content and beverage originated from this process showed higher color difference from the traditional beverage. Consumers could not distinguish among beverages processed thermally and sanitized by chlorination. Beverage from blanched fruits in both temperatures obtained good notes and positive purchase intention
Conservação pós-colheita de espigas de milho verde minimamente processado sob diferentes temperaturas.
Objetivou-se, neste trabalho, avaliar o efeito de três temperaturas (5°C, 8°C e 11°C), na qualidade de híbridos de milho verde (Zea maiz L.) com endosperma normal, minimamente processado, durante oito dias de armazenamento, com avaliações a cada dois dias. Foram utilizadas espigas de dois híbridos, sendo um comercial da Sementes Agroceres (Ag 1051) e outro do programa de melhoramento da Embrapa Milho e Sorgo (Embrapa HT1). A temperatura de 5°C foi a que melhor preservou a qualidade das espigas dos híbridos de milho verde estudados, por proporcionar perda de massa reduzida e manutenção dos teores de sólidos solúveis, frutose e glicose. O híbrido Ag 1051 apresentou menor perda de massa, maiores valores de umidade e maior teor de frutose. O Embrapa HT1 apresentou maiores valores iniciais e finais para os teores de sólidos solúveis e maior valor para a coloração b*. O valor L*, que indica quãoclaro e escuro é produto, também diminuiu ao longo do armazenamento, indicando escurecimento das espigas ao longo do armazenamento
Overspill avalanching in a dense reservoir network
Sustainability of communities, agriculture, and industry is strongly
dependent on an effective storage and supply of water resources. In some
regions the economic growth has led to a level of water demand which can only
be accomplished through efficient reservoir networks. Such infrastructures are
not always planned at larger scale but rather made by farmers according to
their local needs of irrigation during droughts. Based on extensive data from
the upper Jaguaribe basin, one of the world's largest system of reservoirs,
located in the Brazilian semiarid northeast, we reveal that surprisingly it
self-organizes into a scale-free network exhibiting also a power-law in the
distribution of the lakes and avalanches of discharges. With a new
self-organized-criticality-type model we manage to explain the novel critical
exponents. Implementing a flow model we are able to reproduce the measured
overspill evolution providing a tool for catastrophe mitigation and future
planning
