Keep It Simple: A Methodological Discussion of Wage Inequalities in the Spanish Hospitality Industry.

Human capital in hospitality has been widely addressed by applying sophisticated econometric methods. However, for the Spanish case, there was a gap in the analyses as the crucial importance of collective agreements was undervalued. This paper redesigns the conceptualisation of the variables and applies a subsequent new classification to job positions, as it deals with the outliers at different levels of rigorousness. Then, linearised and quantile regressions were run for each case, obtaining an outcome of thirty values for each variable. The analyses and comparisons show the high importance of collective agreements on salaries, the noticeable low values of human capital variables, and provides additional information for the nationality and gender gaps, the latter strikingly high in upper professional categories. Overall, this paper demonstrates the importance of a proper study design to prevent advanced econometric models from falling into bias and it minimises the differences between methods.Partial funding for open access charge: Universidad de Málag

Equivalence scales and consumption inequality: a study of household consumption patterns in Italy

    No full text
This paper utilises unit record survey data on expenditures and incomes of Italian households of different demographic profiles to estimate consumption equivalence scales which measure the relative levels of spending required by households of different composition to attain given levels of utility. The equivalence scales have been obtained from the parameters of few alternative version of a rank 3 complete demand system with demand shifters.Among the demographic variables included in the models, the type of housing tenure and the age of children have special relevance. We have also computed the expenditure elasticities for the most common types of households and analysed how deflating expenditure with the equivalence scales affects consumption inequality among households. The analysis is developed within the framework of hypothesised utility maximising behaviour of households

Left atrial appendage closure guided by 3D computed tomography printing technology: A case control study

Background: We sought to evaluate the additional value of left atrial appendage (LAA) 3D printing derived from computed tomography (CCT) in determining the size for LAA occlusion (LAAO) devices as compared to standard measurement by using occurrence of LAA leak as endpoint. Methods: We evaluated 6 patients with LAA leak (cases) and 14 matched patients without LAA leak (controls) after LAAO. For each group, a patient-specific 3D printed model of LAA was manufactured using CT pre-operative images. The size recommended by the 3D printed model was compared with the size of the implanted device. Results: Compared to the 3D printed model, 55% of the devices were underestimated, the two sizing approaches agreed in 35% of the patients, while the 3D printed model overestimated the size in 10% of patients. The prevalence of LAA leak was significantly higher in the subset of patients with underestimation of prosthesis implanted with the standard approach as compared to the other patients (p = 0.019). Conclusion: 3D printing of the LAA may provide additional value to standard practice for LAAO device prosthesis sizing with the potential impact to reduce LAA leak
