Telescopic data on the twentieth century regressions of Mars' south polar cap were reexamined for evidence of interannual variability. Several regressions, particularly that of 1956, are found to differ significantly from the mean. The possibility of correlations with major dust storms is explored

Synthesis optimization of carbon-supported ZrO2 nanoparticles from different organometallic precursors

We report here the synthesis of carbon-supported ZrO2 nanoparticles from zirconium oxyphthalocyanine (ZrOPc) and acetylacetonate [Zr(acac)4]. Using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS), we could investigate the thermal decomposition behavior of the chosen precursors. According to those results, we chose the heat treatment temperatures (THT) using partial oxidizing (PO) and reducing (RED) atmosphere. By X-ray diffraction we detected structure and size of the nanoparticles; the size was further confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. ZrO2 formation happens at lower temperature with Zr(acac)4 than with ZrOPc, due to the lower thermal stability and a higher oxygen amount in Zr(acac)4. Using ZrOPc at THT C900 °C, PO conditions facilitate the crystallite growth and formation of distinct tetragonal ZrO2, while with Zr(acac)4 a distinct tetragonal ZrO2 phase is observed already at THT C750 °C in both RED and PO conditions. Tuning of ZrO2 nanocrystallite size from 5 to 9 nm by varying the precursor loading is also demonstrated. The chemical state of zirconium was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, which confirms ZrO2 formation from different synthesis routes

Physical education and sport in rural areas of Poland as Described by the "Raz, Dwa, Trzy" magazine (1931-1939)

Czasopismo „Raz, Dwa, Trzy” ukazywało się w latach 1931–1939. Problematyka wychowania fizycznego i sportu na wsi dość rzadko była podejmowana na jego łamach. Część materiałów dotyczyła wdrażania i upowszechniania aktywności fizycznej na wsi. Głównymi przeszkodami – jak stwierdzano w publikacjach – były m.in. brak odpowiedniej infrastruktury oraz kadry instruktorskiej. Ważnym czynnikiem w upowszechnianiu wychowania fizycznego i sportu na wsi była dyskusja nad charakterem i programem aktywności fizycznej. Wśród organizacji i towarzystw działających na wsi wyróżniały się związki młodzieży wiejskiej oraz Związek Strzelecki. Na łamach czasopisma „Raz, Dwa, Trzy” publikowano materiały dotyczące współzawodnictwa sportowego, sportowców rekrutujących się ze środowiska wiejskiego. Dyscypliną, która należała do najpopularniejszych, była lekkoatletyka. Sukcesy – w tej dyscyplinie – na arenie ogólnopolskiej odnosili sportowcy Białostockiego Związku Młodzieży Wiejskiej. Młodzież wiejska – należąca do organizacji wychowania fizycznego i przysposobienia wojskowego – brała udział w zawodach marszowych: w Marszu Narciarskim Zułów – Wilno, Marszu Narciarskim Huculskim Szlakiem II Brygady Legionów oraz w Marszu Sulejówek – Belweder. Sukcesy odnosili sportowcy „Strzelca” Janowa Dolina. Publikacje, materiały i notatki dotyczące wychowania fizycznego i sportu na wsi w Polsce w świetle czasopisma „Raz, Dwa, Trzy” przyczyniły się do upowszechnienia aktywności fizycznej w środowisku wiejskim.The “Raz, Dwa, Trzy” [One, Two, Three] magazine was Publisher In the years 1931–1939. The issues connected with physical education and sports in rural areas were quite rarely discussed in the “Raz, Dwa, Trzy” magazine. Some of the material concerned introducing and propagating physical activity in rural areas. The publications pointed out that the main obstacles were, among other things, shortage of infrastructure and instructors. An important factor in propagation of physical education and sports in rural areas was the discussion on the character and programme of physical activities in rural areas. Among organizations and associations that were active in rural areas an important role was played by peasant youth unions and the Riflemen’s Association. The pages of the “Raz, Dwa, Trzy” magazine hosted materials concerning sports competitions, sportsmen coming from rural environment. The most popular discipline was track-and-field. Sportsmen representing Białystok Branch of Peasant Youth Union successfully competed in trackand- field on the national arena. Young people from rural areas – members of physical education and cadet corps organisations participated in marching competitions: in Zułów Ski March – Vilnius, Ski March along the Hucul Trail of the 2nd Legions Brigade and in Sulejówek – Belweder March. Sportsmen from “Strzelec” [Rifleman] Janowa Dolina also competed syccessfully.
