    U-duality in three and four dimensions

    Using generalised geometry we study the action of U-duality acting in three and four dimensions on the bosonic fields of eleven dimensional supergravity. We compare the U-duality symmetry with the T-duality symmetry of double field theory and see how the SL(2)SL(3)SL(2)\otimes SL(3) and SL(5) U-duality groups reduce to the SO(2,2) and SO(3,3) T-duality symmetry groups of the type IIA theory. As examples we dualise M2-branes, both black and extreme. We find that uncharged black M2-branes become charged under U-duality, generalising the Harrison transformation, while extreme M2-branes will become new extreme M2-branes.     Public schools continue to have difficulty retaining vocational agriculture teachers in the profession. The percentage of vocational agriculture teachers who leave the teaching profession is higher than the percentage for other teaching fields. According to Craig(1982), the turnover rate among vocational agriculture teachers was 12.9& for 1981. This rate was higher than the rate for all teachers which was estimated to be between 7% and 10% in 1980 (Relfschneider, 1980). McCracken, Smith and Suandi (1982( indicated that if county extension agents and vocational agriculture teachers are to achieve their most effective level, administrators must reduce this turnover rate

    Transparency of 0.2% GdCl3 Doped Water in a Stainless Steel Test Environment

    The possibility of neutron and neutrino detection using water Cerenkov detectors doped with gadolinium holds the promise of constructing very large high-efficiency detectors with wide-ranging application in basic science and national security. This study addressed a major concern regarding the feasibility of such detectors: the transparency of the doped water to the ultraviolet Cerenkov light. We report on experiments conducted using a 19-meter water transparency measuring instrument and associated materials test tank. Sensitive measurements of the transparency of water doped with 0.2% GdCl3 at 337nm, 400nm and 420nm were made using this instrument.     Tactical project planning under uncertainty: fuzzy approach

    At the tactical planning level in a multi-project environment, uncertainties are inherent to the workloads, and costs may be involved for using non-regular capacity and violating project due dates. We propose an approach to identify whether non-regular capacities might be needed to meet the projects' due dates. This problem is known as rough-cut capacity planning (RCCP) problem under uncertainty. We propose a possibilistic approach, which is based on modelling uncertain workloads with fuzzy sets. We present the resulting fuzzy rough-cut capacity planning (FRCCP), and show that we can use the possibilistic approach to provide a robust solution with a fuzzy resource loading profile that supports managers in decision making. We provide a simulated annealing approach to solve the FRCCP, and test it against several existing RCCP approaches. For the experiments we use real life instances from a shipyard maintenance centre

    Highly Dispersive Spin Excitations in the Chain Cuprate Li2CuO2

    We present an inelastic neutron scattering investigation of Li2CuO2 detecting the long sought quasi-1D magnetic excitations with a large dispersion along the CuO2-chains studied up to 25 meV. The total dispersion is governed by a surprisingly large ferromagnetic (FM) nearest-neighbor exchange integral J1=-228 K. An anomalous quartic dispersion near the zone center and a pronounced minimum near (0,0.11,0.5) r.l.u. (corresponding to a spiral excitation with a pitch angle about 41 degree point to the vicinity of a 3D FM-spiral critical point. The leading exchange couplings are obtained applying standard linear spin-wave theory. The 2nd neighbor inter-chain interaction suppresses a spiral state and drives the FM in-chain ordering below the Ne'el temperature. The obtained exchange parameters are in agreement with the results for a realistic five-band extended Hubbard Cu 3d O 2p model and L(S)DA+U predictions.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Europhys.     Random permutation online isotonic regression

    We revisit isotonic regression on linear orders, the problem of fitting monotonic functions to best explain the data, in an online setting. It was previously shown that online isotonic regression is unlearnable in a fully adversarial model, which lead to its study in the fixed design model. Here, we instead develop the more practical random permutation model. We show that the regret is bounded above by the excess leave-one-out loss for which we develop efficient algorithms and matching lower bounds. We also analyze the class of simple and popular forward algorithms and recommend where to look for algorithms for online isotonic regression on partial orders
