    Bored pile design in stiff clay II:Mechanisms and uncertainty

    The soil mechanics related to pile design in clay has been the subject of substantial engineering research. In a companion paper, various codes of practice were reviewed showing the effect on pile capacity of the different global factors of safety that emerge from the various partial factor combinations for the ultimate limit state. Factors of safety are generally specified based on the opinions of experts. In this paper an assessment will be made of various objective procedures that can be used to reduce uncertainty in the design process, especially regarding the adoption of a pile resistance model and the selection of a soil strength profile as part of a ultimate limit state check, and the estimation of pile head settlement in the context of a serviceability limit state check. It is shown that both total stress and effective stress calculation methods are applicable in London Clay. Estimates of settlement using a non-linear soil stress–strain relationship are made and compared with published data. It is shown that the compression of the concrete dominates the settlement of long piles. Given the low settlements observed, recommendations are made for a reduction in standard factors of safety for bored pile design in stiff clays. </jats:p

    Water facilities in retrospect and prospect: An illuminating tool for vehicle design

    Water facilities play a fundamental role in the design of air, ground, and marine vehicles by providing a qualitative, and sometimes quantitative, description of complex flow phenomena. Water tunnels, channels, and tow tanks used as flow-diagnostic tools have experienced a renaissance in recent years in response to the increased complexity of designs suitable for advanced technology vehicles. These vehicles are frequently characterized by large regions of steady and unsteady three-dimensional flow separation and ensuing vortical flows. The visualization and interpretation of the complicated fluid motions about isolated vehicle components and complete configurations in a time and cost effective manner in hydrodynamic test facilities is a key element in the development of flow control concepts, and, hence, improved vehicle designs. A historical perspective of the role of water facilities in the vehicle design process is presented. The application of water facilities to specific aerodynamic and hydrodynamic flow problems is discussed, and the strengths and limitations of these important experimental tools are emphasized

    A novel topology of high-speed SRM for high-performance traction applications

    A novel topology of high-speed Switched Reluctance Machine (SRM) for high-performance traction applications is presented in this article. The target application, a Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) in the sport segment poses very demanding specifications on the power and torque density of the electric traction machine. After evaluating multiple alternatives, the topology proposed is a 2-phase axial flux machine featuring both segmented twin rotors and a segmented stator core. Electromagnetic, thermal and mechanical models of the proposed topology are developed and subsequently integrated in an overall optimisation algorithm in order to find the optimal geometry for the application. Special focus is laid on the thermal management of the machine, due to the tough thermal conditions resulting from the high frequency, high current and highly saturated operation. Some experimental results are also included in order to validate the modelling and simulation results

    Assessing housing quality and its impact on health, safety and sustainability

    Background The adverse health and environmental effects of poor housing quality are well established. A central requirement for evidence-based policies and programmes to improve housing standards is a valid, reliable and practical way of measuring housing quality that is supported by policy agencies, the housing sector, researchers and the public. Methods This paper provides guidance on the development of housing quality-assessment tools that link practical measures of housing conditions to their effects on health, safety and sustainability, with particular reference to tools developed in New Zealand and England. Results The authors describe how information on housing quality can support individuals, agencies and the private sector to make worthwhile improvements to the health, safety and sustainability of housing. The information gathered and the resultant tools developed should be guided by the multiple purposes and end users of this information. Other important issues outlined include deciding on the scope, detailed content, practical administration issues and how the information will be analysed and summarised for its intended end users. There are likely to be considerable benefits from increased international collaboration and standardisation of approaches to measuring housing hazards. At the same time, these assessment approaches need to consider local factors such as climate, geography, culture, predominating building practices, important housing-related health issues and existing building codes. Conclusions An effective housing quality-assessment tool has a central role in supporting improvements to housing. The issues discussed in this paper are designed to motivate and assist the development of such tools

    Samphire for waterlogged salt land

    For non-waterlogged and mildly waterlogged salt land a number of salt-tolerant shrubs may be used for forage production. Areas which are highly saline and regularly waterlogged are not suited to these shrubs. However, during trials with shrub species, samphires (Arthrocnemum spp.) were found to volunteer and grow well on these sites. Research into the use of samphires has shown that it is possible to harvest seed and obtain a seed sample suitable for sowing through a drill. Established samphire stands provide useful grazing in many parts of the Western Australian wheatbelt

    Background &amp; AimsDNA methylation alterations may provide important insights into gene-environment interaction in cancer, aging, and complex diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We aim first to determine whether the circulating DNA methylome in patients requiring surgery may predict Crohn’s disease (CD) recurrence following intestinal resection; and second to compare the circulating methylome seen in patients with established CD with that we had reported in a series of inception cohorts.MethodsTOPPIC was a placebo-controlled, randomized controlled trial of 6-mercaptopurine at 29 UK centers in patients with CD undergoing ileocolic resection between 2008 and 2012. Genomic DNA was extracted from whole blood samples from 229 of the 240 patients taken before intestinal surgery and analyzed using 450KHumanMethylation and Infinium Omni Express Exome arrays (Illumina, San Diego, CA). Coprimary objectives were to determine whether methylation alterations may predict clinical disease recurrence; and to assess whether the epigenetic alterations previously reported in newly diagnosed IBD were present in the patients with CD recruited into the TOPPIC study. Differential methylation and variance analysis was performed comparing patients with and without clinical evidence of recurrence. Secondary analyses included investigation of methylation associations with smoking, genotype (MeQTLs), and chronologic age. Validation of our previously published case-control observation of the methylome was performed using historical control data (CD, n = 123; Control, n = 198).ResultsCD recurrence in patients following surgery is associated with 5 differentially methylated positions (Holm P &lt; .05), including probes mapping to WHSC1 (P = 4.1 × 10-9, Holm P = .002) and EFNA3 (P = 4.9 × 10-8, Holm P = .02). Five differentially variable positions are demonstrated in the group of patients with evidence of disease recurrence including a probe mapping to MAD1L1 (P = 6.4 × 10-5). DNA methylation clock analyses demonstrated significant age acceleration in CD compared with control subjects (GrimAge + 2 years; 95% confidence interval, 1.2–2.7 years), with some evidence for accelerated aging in patients with CD with disease recurrence following surgery (GrimAge +1.04 years; 95% confidence interval, -0.04 to 2.22). Significant methylation differences between CD cases and control subjects were seen by comparing this cohort in conjunction with previously published control data, including validation of our previously described differentially methylated positions (RPS6KA2 P = 1.2 × 10-19, SBNO2 = 1.2 × 10-11) and regions (TXK [false discovery rate, P = 3.6 × 10-14], WRAP73 [false discovery rate, P = 1.9 × 10-9], VMP1 [false discovery rate, P = 1.7 × 10-7], and ITGB2 [false discovery rate, P = 1.4 × 10-7]).ConclusionsWe demonstrate differential methylation and differentially variable methylation in patients developing clinical recurrence within 3 years of surgery. Moreover, we report replication of the CD-associated methylome, previously characterized only in adult and pediatric inception cohorts, in patients with medically refractory disease needing surgery
