An experience of modularity through design
We aim to utilise the experiences of a marine industry-based design team to determine the need for research into a modular design methodology in an industrial environment. In order to achieve this we couple the outcome of a current design project with the findings of a recent literature survey with the objectives of firstly, clarifying why a methodology is required and, secondly, defining the key elements which the methodology would have to realise or address. The potential benefits of modularity have long been recognised in the shipbuilding industry. Many shipbuilders adopt a 'module' approach to ship construction whereby the ship structure is separated into a number of large structural 'blocks' to ease manufacture and manoeuvrability during construction. However, as understanding of the capabilities of modularity as a design tool develops there is increased interest in capitalising on the differing life phase benefits of modularity such as reduced design costs and time, increased ease of maintenance, upgrade, re-use, redesign and standardisation across individual products and product families. This is especially pertinent in naval shipbuilding where the maintenance of a class of ship requires that all previously designed ships in that class must be of similar outfitting and must be able to interface with the new ship, in terms of propulsion, weapons, communications and electronics, and thus often require some form of retrofit. Therefore, many shipbuilders are moving from viewing modularity as a purely 'manufacturing' principle to a design centred principle. However, as noted by Chang and Ward 'none of the design theories or tools in the mechanical world serves as an articulate procedure for designers to follow in practising modular design'. Thus, despite the identification of a need to introduce modular principles at an earlier stage than detail design and construction, there is little aid in the form of tools, techniques and methodologies for designers in practice
Triplets of Quasars at high redshift I: Photometric data
We have conducted an optical and infrared imaging in the neighbourhoods of 4
triplets of quasars. R, z', J and Ks images were obtained with MOSAIC II and
ISPI at Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory. Accurate relative photometry
and astrometry were obtained from these images for subsequent use in deriving
photometric redshifts. We analyzed the homogeneity and depth of the photometric
catalog by comparing with results coming from the literature. The good
agreement shows that our magnitudes are reliable to study large scale structure
reaching limiting magnitudes of R = 24.5, z' = 22.5, J = 20.5 and Ks = 19.0.
With this catalog we can study the neighbourhoods of the triplets of quasars
searching for galaxy overdensities such as groups and galaxy clusters.Comment: The paper contains 12 figures and 3 table
The Chandra Multi-Wavelength Project: Optical Spectroscopy and the Broadband Spectral Energy Distributions of X-ray Selected AGN
From optical spectroscopy of X-ray sources observed as part of ChaMP, we
present redshifts and classifications for a total of 1569 Chandra sources from
our targeted spectroscopic follow up using the FLWO, SAAO, WIYN, CTIO, KPNO,
Magellan, MMT and Gemini telescopes, and from archival SDSS spectroscopy. We
classify the optical counterparts as 50% BLAGN, 16% NELG, 14% ALG, and 20%
stars. We detect QSOs out to z~5.5 and galaxies out to z~3. We have compiled
extensive photometry from X-ray to radio bands. Together with our spectroscopic
information, this enables us to derive detailed SEDs for our extragalactic
sources. We fit a variety of templates to determine bolometric luminosities,
and to constrain AGN and starburst components where both are present. While
~58% of X-ray Seyferts require a starburst event to fit observed photometry
only 26% of the X-ray QSO population appear to have some kind of star formation
contribution. This is significantly lower than for the Seyferts, especially if
we take into account torus contamination at z>1 where the majority of our X-ray
QSOs lie. In addition, we observe a rapid drop of the percentage of starburst
contribution as X-ray luminosity increases. This is consistent with the
quenching of star formation by powerful QSOs, as predicted by the merger model,
or with a time lag between the peak of star formation and QSO activity. We have
tested the hypothesis that there should be a strong connection between X-ray
obscuration and star-formation but we do not find any association between X-ray
column density and star formation rate both in the general population or the
star-forming X-ray Seyferts. Our large compilation also allows us to report
here the identification of 81 XBONG, 78 z>3 X-ray sources and 8 Type-2 QSO
candidates. Also we have identified the highest redshift (z=5.4135) X-ray

Aligning ecology and markets in the forest carbon cycle
A forest carbon (C) offset is a quantifiable unit of C that is commonly developed at the local or regional project scale and is designed to counterbalance anthropogenic C emissions by sequestering C in trees. In cap-and-trade programs, forest offsets have market value if the sequestered C is additional (more than would have occurred in the absence of the project) and permanent (sequestered within the project boundary for a specified period of time). Local management and ecological context determine the rate of C sequestration, risk of loss, and hence the market value. An understanding of global C dynamics can inform policy but may not be able to effectively price an ecosystem service, such as C sequestration. Appropriate pricing requires the assistance of ecologists to assess C stock abundance and stability over spatial and temporal scales appropriate for the regional market. We use the risk that sequestered C will be emitted as a result of wildfire (reversal risk) to show how ecological context can influence market valuation in offset programs
Thermoelectric refrigerator
A refrigerator is provided which combines the benefits of superinsulation materials with thermoelectric devices and phase change materials to provide an environmentally benign system that is energy efficient and can maintain relatively uniform temperatures for extended periods of time with relatively low electrical power requirements. The refrigerator includes a thermoelectric assembly having a thermoelectric device with a hot sink and a cold sink. The superinsulation materials include a plurality of vacuum panels. The refrigerator is formed from an enclosed structure having a door. The vacuum panels may be contained within the walls of the enclosed structure and the door. By mounting the thermoelectric assembly on the door, the manufacturer of the enclosed structure is simplified and the overall R rating of the refrigerator increased. Also an electrical motor and propellers may be mounted on the door to assist in the circulation of air to improve the efficiency of the cold sink and the hot sink. A propeller and/or impeller is preferably mounted within the refrigerator to assist in establishing the desired air circulation flow path

Changes in global net radiative imbalance 1985-2012
Combining satellite data, atmospheric reanalyses and climate model simulations, variability in the net downward radiative flux imbalance at the top of Earth's atmosphere (N) is reconstructed and linked to recent climate change. Over the 1985-1999 period mean N (0.34 ± 0.67 Wm–2) is lower than for the 2000-2012 period (0.62 ± 0.43 Wm–2, uncertainties at 90% confidence level) despite the slower rate of surface temperature rise since 2000. While the precise magnitude of N remains uncertain, the reconstruction captures interannual variability which is dominated by the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in 1991 and the El Niño Southern Oscillation. Monthly deseasonalized interannual variability in N generated by an ensemble of 9 climate model simulations using prescribed sea surface temperature and radiative forcings and from the satellite-based reconstruction is significantly correlated (r ∼ 0.6) over the 1985-2012 period

EPIC 219388192 b - an inhabitant of the brown dwarf desert in the Ruprecht 147 open cluster
We report the discovery of EPIC 219388192 b, a transiting brown dwarf in a
5.3-day orbit around a member star of Ruprecht-147, the oldest nearby open
cluster association, which was photometrically monitored by K2 during its
Campaign 7. We combine the K2 time-series data with ground-based adaptive
optics imaging and high resolution spectroscopy to rule out false positive
scenarios and determine the main parameters of the system. EPIC 219388192 b has
a radius of =~ and mass of
=~, yielding a mean density of
~. The host star is nearly a Solar twin with
mass =~, radius
=~, effective temperature
=~K and iron abundance [Fe/H]=~dex.
Its age, spectroscopic distance, and reddening are consistent with those of
Ruprecht-147, corroborating its cluster membership. EPIC 219388192 b is the
first brown dwarf with precise determinations of mass, radius and age, and
