In the face of changing action demands, emerging through profound organisational reforms on the company level, increasing economic competition and the deteriorating strength of the collective bargaining system, trade unions and employer/business organisations are anxious to define and engage in new fields of action. Concrete empirical initiatives of these actors can be found in the area of industrial policy. In this area a new field of work is being developed that is to be taken into account in the analysis of changes in the system of industrial relations since the definition of work conditions and work rules also takes place on this level. This development is being discussed in context of the example of the industrial relations system in Baden-Württemberg

The report argues that ICT have an important role to play in developing learning opportunities for older people in an ageing society. It points to both opportunities (e.g. more individualized learning) and obstacles (e.g. not user-friendly ICT) as well as to the need to involve all actors in the development of ICT-enabled learning tools. It concludes that holistic policies are needed to support learning opportunities in ageing societies, enabled by ICT.JRC.J.4 - Information Societ

Active Ageing and Independent Living Services: The Role of Information and Communication Technology

    Get PDF
Ageing populations influence services and traditional social support systems like social and health care in the European countries, as well as global patterns in labour and capital markets. It is widely accepted that Information and Communication Technology (ICT) applications can provide new ways of helping older citizens to live independently. ICT-based applications for independent living vary from general purpose and communication applications to applications specifically for e-learning, e-work and e-health. ICT-based services and understanding the needs of older people are key to supporting Active Ageing in upcoming ageing societies. However, there is still limited understanding of older people's technology-related needs. This report aims to support the research and policy development activities of DG Information Society and Media towards the European Research Area. It highlights the main policy areas related to ageing, where ICT-based applications could play a role, and suggests a number of research and policy challenges that need to be resolved in order to maximise the opportunities offered by ICT.JRC.J.4-Information Societ

Transgenderism and Pronouns: Assessing the Communication Practices of Christian College Students

    Get PDF
The issue of transgenderism has been part of prominent public and academic discussions in recent years, and ought to be addressed by communication scholars. One area of communication research that is missing from the current body of literature is the use of preferred pronoun usage among religious groups, particularly Christians. This study offers insight into this issue through a qualitative survey of the perspectives of Generation Z college students attending a Christian university. This survey was then analyzed via thematic coding through the lens of Communication Accommodation Theory. Results indicate these students have varying approaches to communicating with and about those who identify as transgender, with some gravitating toward the use of accommodating language and some gravitating toward nonaccommodation

The issue of transgenderism has been part of prominent public and academic discussions in recent years and as such ought to be addressed by communication scholars. One area of communication research that is missing from the current body of literature is that of preferred pronoun usage amongst religious groups, particularly Christians. This study offers insight into this issue by answering the following research questions: how do members of Generation Z attending a Christian university adapt or not adapt their communication to accommodate individuals who identify as transgender? and what motivates members of Generation Z attending a Christian university to adapt or not adapt their communication to accommodate individuals who identify as transgender? A qualitative survey of Generation Z college students attending a Christian university was conducted to assess their perspectives. This survey was then analyzed via thematic coding through the lens of Communication Accommodation Theory. Results indicate these students have varying approaches to communicating with and about those who identify as transgender, with some gravitating toward the use of accommodating language and some gravitating toward nonaccommodation. The desire to communicate love and express their own beliefs characterized their motivations for varying these approaches. The results of this study can be utilized by pastors, policy makers, political candidates, and other scholars to better understand the perspectives of young Christians and their interpersonal communication tendencies with those who identify as transgender
