Take Me Out: Space and Place in Library Interactions
Information interactions are strongly affected by the place where they occur. Specific locations are ofen associated with searches on particular topics, and individual users perform different tasks in habituated places. A classic example of habituated space is the commuter who regularly reads the news on the train. This paper investigates these associations through four user studies that examine different uses of place in information interaction. Through this, we reveal the ways in which the location of information interactions makes them effective or ineffective. This extends our interpretation of the role of place in information interaction beyond established foci such as location-based search

Getting creative in everyday life: Investigating arts and crafts hobbyists' information behavior
While there has been increasing interest in how creative professionals find information to drive creative outputs, previous information behavior research has largely ignored how arts and crafts hobbyists look for information sources in their everyday lives. To fill this literature gap, we conducted interviews and observations with arts and crafts hobbyists to find out how they conceive potential DIY projects. The findings highlight three themes: the dearth of human sources, the prevalence of domain-specific information, and the use of self-curated information. In addition to empirical results, this work also broadens the understanding of information behavior in an arts and crafts context by studying populations beyond professional artists

After serendipity strikes: Creating value from encountered information
Existing research into serendipitous information encountering has focused on how people stumble upon information, rather than how they create value from the information encountered. This online diary study with follow-up interviews provides an enriched understanding of the subjective value of information encounters and the motivators, barriers and actions involved in creating value from them. We leverage our findings to generate design suggestions for digital information tools aimed at assisting in creating value from encountered information

An Optical Characterization of Atomization in Non-Evaporating Diesel Sprays
High-speed planar laser Mie scattering and Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) was employed for the determination of Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD) distribution in non-evaporating diesel sprays. The effect of rail pressure, distillation profile, and consequent fuel viscosity on the drop size distribution developing during primary and secondary atomization was investigated. Samples of conventional crude-oil derived middle-distillate diesel and light distillate kerosene were delivered into an optically accessible mini-sac injector, using a customized high-pressure common rail diesel fuel injection system. Two optical channels were employed to capture images of elastic Mie and inelastic LIF scattering simultaneously on a high-speed video camera at 10 kHz.
Results are presented for sprays obtained at maximum needle lift during the injection. These reveal that the emergent sprays exhibit axial asymmetry and vorticity. An increase in the rail pressure was observed to lead to finer atomization, with larger droplets observable in the neighbourhood of the central axis of the spray, decreasing with radius towards the spray boundaries. Finally, the light kerosene was observed to produce smaller droplets (as measured by Sauter mean diameter), relative to the conventional diesel, suggesting a correlation between distillation profile and viscosity, and mean spray droplet size

We are the Change that we Seek: Information Interactions During a Change of Viewpoint
There has been considerable hype about filter bubbles and echo chambers influencing the views of information consumers. The fear is that these technologies are undermining democracy by swaying opinion and creating an uninformed, polarised populace. The literature in this space is mostly techno-centric, addressing the impact of technology. In contrast, our work is the first research in the information interaction field to examine changing viewpoints from a human-centric perspective. It provides a new understanding of view change and how we might support informed, autonomous view change behaviour. We interviewed 18 participants about a self-identified change of view, and the information touchpoints they engaged with along the way. In this paper we present the information types and sources that informed changes of viewpoint, and the ways in which our participants interacted with that information. We describe our findings in the context of the techno-centric literature and suggest principles for designing digital information environments that support user autonomy and reflection in viewpoint formation
Short-term effect of non-preserved cationic oil in-water ophthalmic emulsion on tear meniscus parameters of healthy individuals in a prospective, controlled pilot study
Background: This study investigated the effect of instilling a single drop of non-preserved cationic oil-in-water ophthalmic emulsion (Cationorm®) on the lower (LTM) and upper tear meniscus (UTM) parameters of normal eyes.
Methods: In this prospective, single-center, non-randomized, controlled pilot study, optical coherence tomography was used to estimate the UTM and LTM height, depth, and cross-sectional area in participants without a history of dry eye disease. In the right eye (study eye), we instilled one drop of Cationorm® in the lower conjunctival sac. Scans of the tear menisci were acquired at baseline, before the instillation, and at 5, 15, and 30 min thereafter. Control scans of the left eye (control eye) were obtained at the same timepoints. The tear meniscus parameters of the study eye were compared with the control eye at each timepoint.
Results: Twenty subjects (11 male and 9 female; mean ± standard deviation of age: 37.8 ± 10.9 years) were included in the study. Compared to the control eye, instillation of a single drop of Cationorm® resulted in significantly higher LTM parameter values and a higher UTM cross-sectional area up to 30 min after instillation (all P < 0.05). The UTM height and depth were significantly greater in the study eye than in the control eye up to 5 min (P < 0.001 and 0.007, respectively) and 15-min (P = 0.045, and 0.002, respectively) after Cationorm® instillation. In the study eye, Cationorm® resulted in a significant increase in LTM parameter values up to 30 min post-instillation (all P < 0.001). The UTM height was significantly greater up to 15 min post-instillation than at baseline. The UTM depth and area increased significantly from baseline to 5 min after instillation (P = 0.043, and 0.002, respectively).
Conclusions: Cationorm® seems to have a prolonged residence time on the ocular surface of healthy subjects as indicated by LTM parameters and to a lesser extent by UTM parameters

The effect of cavitation on atomization in non-evaporating diesel sprays
The determination of the distribution of the local liquid volume fraction (LVF) in non-evaporating diesel sprays was achieved using Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF). The LVF distribution developing during the primary and secondary atomisation was investigated as a function of rail pressure, physical properties and needle lift. Samples of conventional diesel and light kerosene were injected through an optically accessible mini-sac type injector, employing a custom diesel fuel injection system. The optical arrangement facilitated the acquisition of images with an image resolution of 28ÎĽm/pixel using a high speed camera operating at 10 kHz. The analysis is focused on images obtained at different injection stages (1.8ms, 3.7ms, 5.6ms after start of injection (SoI)). The results revealed that the diesel spray developed an asymmetric structure, especially at the intermediate and later stages of the injection. The LVF decreases with increasing axial distance and the primary atomisation occurs immediately after the spray enters the surrounding gas. Lastly, the findings of the phenomenological analysis suggests that conventional diesel shows a later primary and secondary atomisation than light kerosene, due to their difference in the physical properties
Iterative algorithm versus analytic solutions of the parametrically driven dissipative quantum harmonic oscillator
We consider the Brownian motion of a quantum mechanical particle in a
one-dimensional parabolic potential with periodically modulated curvature under
the influence of a thermal heat bath. Analytic expressions for the
time-dependent position and momentum variances are compared with results of an
iterative algorithm, the so-called quasiadiabatic propagator path integral
algorithm (QUAPI). We obtain good agreement over an extended range of
parameters for this spatially continuous quantum system. These findings
indicate the reliability of the algorithm also in cases for which analytic

Bovine Sperm Sexing Alters Sperm Morphokinetics and Subsequent Early Embryonic Development
In artificial insemination the use of sex-sorted bovine sperm results in reduced conception, the causes of which are only partly understood. Therefore, we set out to investigate the effects of sexing on bovine sperm function and early embryonic development. Computer-assisted semen analysis (CASA) of sperm of the same bulls (n = 5), before and after sexing, demonstrated significantly reduced fast (A) and slow (B) progressively motile sperm (p [less than] 0.05) after sexing. Sexed-sperm also revealed significantly less hyperactivated sperm (p [less than] 0.05). As shown by time-lapse videomicroscopy of in vitro produced embryos (n = 360), embryos derived from sexed-sperm displayed significantly increased incidences of arrest at the 4-cell stage (p [less than] 0.05). The relative risk for shrinkage/fusion of blastomeres with subsequent lysis was 1.71 times higher in the embryos derived from sexed-sperm as compared to conventional embryos (p [less than] 0.05) resulting in significantly reduced blastocyst rates (p [less than] 0.001). The relative risk for cleavage was 2.36 times lower in the embryos derived from sex-sorted sperm (p [less than] 0.001). Additionally, sexed-sperm-derived embryos showed reduced survival times (hazard ratio HR = 1.54, p [less than] 0.001) which were bull dependent (p [less than] 0.001). However, the percentage of apoptotic cells was similar to conventional embryos. Furthermore, embryos derived from sexed-sperm were found to reach developmental stages at similar timings as conventional embryos. Our results suggest that reduced conception rates after sexing are due to altered sperm morphokinetics, decreasing the chance of sperm to reach and fertilise the oocyte, and aberrant early embryonic development
Expression and Localization of Glycosaminoglycans/Proteoglycan in Pterygium: An Immunohistochemical Study
Pterygium is a triangle-shaped fibrovascular hyperplasia of the bulbar conjunctiva on the cornea. The purpose of this study was to analyze Proteoglycans (PGs) by Immunohistochemistry (IHC) in pterygium tissues and to compare the results with normal conjunctiva. Twenty-four patients (14 males) undergoing primary pterygium excision and 17 healthy individuals (10 males), undergoing extracapsular cataract surgery, were included. Pterygium tissues and normal conjunctiva tissues were surgically removed. The tissue sections were fixed in 2% paraformaldehyde and incubated with monoclonal antibodies against PGs anti-mouse IgG. Immunohistochemical study showed stronger expression of keratan sulfate in the stroma of the pterygium compared to normal conjunctiva. An increased expression of heparan sulfate was observed in the epithelial layer and around the pterygium vessels. On the other hand, dermatan sulfate showed an increased expression and localization not only in the sub-epithelial area of the pterygium and normal conjunctiva, yet throughout the stroma of the pterygium. The differences in the expression and localization of the studied extracellular matrix proteoglycans in the pterygium tissue compared to normal conjunctiva may explain the tissue hyperplasia, structure, and the functional properties in pterygium
