    Rotational Symmetry of Classical Orbits, Arbitrary Quantization of Angular Momentum and the Role of Gauge Field in Two-Dimensional Space

    We study the quantum-classical correspondence in terms of coherent wave functions of a charged particle in two-dimensional central-scalar-potentials as well as the gauge field of a magnetic flux in the sense that the probability clouds of wave functions are well localized on classical orbits. For both closed and open classical orbits, the non-integer angular-momentum quantization with the level-space of angular momentum being greater or less than â„Ź\hbar is determined uniquely by the same rotational symmetry of classical orbits and probability clouds of coherent wave functions, which is not necessarily 2Ď€2\pi-periodic. The gauge potential of a magnetic flux impenetrable to the particle cannot change the quantization rule but is able to shift the spectrum of canonical angular momentum by a flux-dependent value, which results in a common topological phase for all wave functions in the given model. The quantum mechanical model of anyon proposed by Wilczek (Phys. Rev. Lette. 48, 1144) becomes a special case of the arbitrary-quantization.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

    Multiple Criteria Analysis for Regional Water Quality Management: The Nitra River Case

    This Working Paper documents the implementation of an element of a Decision Support System (DSS) for regional water quality management, applied in cooperation with the Water Research Institute (VUVH, Bratislava) and the Vah River Basin Authority to the Nitra River case study in Slovakia. Several re-usable, modular software tools have been developed and implemented -- a problem-specific generator to produce the core part of the mathematical programming model, tools for the generation and interactive modification of multicriteria problems, and a solver for the resulting mixed-integer optimization problem. Provided in the paper are the following: a complete formulation of the mathematical model (including the applied well-known dissolved oxygen model), a detailed discussion of the data used, documentation of the developed software, an overview of results which might be of interest, and recommendations for future work. Emphasis is placed on the advantages of multicriteria analysis for the regional water quality management problem

    AbstractA chemical genetics approach to functional analysis of gene products utilizes high-throughput target-based screens of compound libraries to identify ligands that modulate the activity of proteins of interest. Candidates are further screened using functional assays designed specifically for the protein—and function—of interest, suffering from the need to customize the assay to each protein. An alternative strategy is to utilize a probe to detect the structural changes that usually accompany binding of a functional ligand. Wide-angle X-ray scattering from proteins provides a means to identify a broad range of ligand-induced changes in secondary, tertiary, and quaternary structure. The speed and accuracy of data acquisition, combined with the label-free targets and binding conditions achievable, indicate that WAXS is well suited as a moderate-throughput assay in the detection and analysis of protein-ligand interactions

    The Use and Efficacy of Comics in Healthcare: A Scoping Review in Graphic Medicine

    Background: Graphic medicine is defined as the “interaction between the medium of comics and the discourse of healthcare”. We seek to understand the ways in which comics are currently being employed in healthcare settings and what effects, if any, these practices have on physician, patient, and their experiences and health outcomes. Methods: Our scoping review is following the six-stage methodology laid out by Arksey and O’Malley (2005) in order to map the field – an appropriate methodology, as graphic medicine is a relatively new field that thus far lacks clear boundaries. We built, tested, and conducted searches in six databases: (1) PubMed, (2) CINAHL, (3) SCOPUS, (4) ERIC, (5) Web of Science (Core), and (6) Google Scholar. Preliminary Findings: Search results netted 5,097 unique citations, which highlights a clear problem with current indexing of comics in medical databases, as at least 80% of the citations were in fact NOT comics at all. In-depth screening and analysis of relevant results is ongoing. Potential Impact: Graphic medicine shows potential as a tool in medical and patient education and may help bridge the health literacy gap. Next Steps: Our next steps include synthesis of relevant studies and ongoing hand-searching for results outside of typical scholarly publications.
