PhDing while panicking in a Pandemic

The Covid-19 pandemic resulted in a global panic and the destabilisation of economic, and education systemsresulting in a sense of anxiety and helplessness at a societal and individual level. We offer a reflection ofthe end of our PhD journey, that occurred concurrently with the beginning of the Covid-19 lockdown in SouthAfrica. Thinking through an intersectional lens we draw parallels between our precarity as black women in higher education nearing the end of our PhD journey (s) and the unpredictability of life during the pandemic. While we recognise the incompatibility of life during a pandemic and PhDing (completing a PhD), we use this moment to map out how the precariousness in academia lends itself to a sense of anxiety and helplessness often to the death of scholarship. We attribute our panic while PhDing to the process of completing the thesis as well as the sense of insecurity we have observed and experienced within academia. We argue that the casualisation of young black women academics, lends itself to the reproduction of exclusionary practices in higher education

Investigating How Tacit Knowledge Management Inclination and Explicit Marketing Agendas Impact Business Success.

The purpose of this paper is to develop and propose a framework that illustrates the relationship that exist between tacit knowledge management inclination, internal explicit marketing agendas and external explicit marketing agendas. Furthermore, the paper will also show how these variables act together to enhance business outcomes such as competitive advantage, growth and development, employee’s satisfaction, customers retention, loyalty, and satisfaction. Similarly, the conceptual framework would demonstrate how the assimilation between the variables extends and fill in the gap on conceptual and operational boundaries of existing models on explicit marketing agendas and how they help organizations attain success. And standing on the shoulders of giants, the proposed framework and associated propositions were drawn; three key concomitant propositions are presented in this research, which are relevant to both academics and practitioners about how tacit knowledge management inclination and explicit marketing agendas interact to enable business achievement

Stories of home and homelessness: young men's experiences of Jo'burg city centre

Masters in Research Psychology, University of the Witwatersrand, 2016Stories of home and homelessness: Young men’s experiences of Jo’burg city centre. This study paper aimed to explore phenomenon of homelessness through the narratives of young men living in Johannesburg. Current research focuses on 1) the prevalence of homelessness or 2) homelessness in relation to social problems. While the first focus serves to perpetuate the conceptualisation of homelessness as only about the absence of a house, the second focus identifies homeless people as the social problem and fails to recognise the social factors that cause and maintain this phenomenon. This study views home+less+ness as not just the lack of shelter but also as a state or experience that is not separate from the rest of the individual life. Seven young men were recruited on the basis of being currently or recently homeless, or living on the streets. The data were collected through narrative interviews and subjected to two forms’ of analysis, thematic analysis and a structural analysis that maps movement in space and time. Main themes identified were related to home as elsewhere; home (lessness) and belonging in past, present; and imagined future relationships and spaces. Mapping the life histories of the participants reveals trajectories of frequent movement, including that participants may journeys ‘home’ to their places of origin but always once again returning to the streets of Johannesburg. This suggests that the conventional ideas of home as a safe space of belonging and homelessness as a place of loss and hopelessness, are not binary, rather these are oscillating, intertwined experiencesGR201

Influence of recycled aggregates of different sources on concrete: part 1 - strength effect

    Get PDF
Abstract: Different types of recycled aggregates consisting of crushed concrete, recycled rubble stone and crushed clay brick were used as 100% coarse aggregates to prepare concrete mixtures of water/cement ratios of 0.6 and 0.45. Crushed natural dolomite stone was used a control. The various concretes were tested for concrete properties of compressive strength, split tensile strength, the Youngs modulus of elasticity and abrasion resistance. It was found that recycled aggregates reduce the workability of concrete mixtures. Use of recycled aggregates of concrete origin also exhibits reduction in compressive strength and split tensile strength by up to 35%. With high strength concrete mixes of at least 50 MPa, the strength losses reduce to negligible levels in some cases. Crushed brick stones gave much higher split tensile strength than all the other recycled stones. The relationship between elastic moduli and compressive strength for concretes made with normal aggregates does not appear to directly apply to concretes made using recycled aggregates. Crushed brick also gave high abrasion resistance similar to the performance of the control dolomite stone and better than the other recycled aggregates

Effect of Aeration and KNO3 in Seed Priming on The Germination of Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) Seeds

Seed priming by soaking in KNO3 has been used to enhance seed performance and crop establishment in tomatoes. However, seeds that are immersed in a solution for a long time may be deprived of oxygen during critical phases of imbibition. Aeration during priming is a solution to solve this problem. Thus, this study aims to determine the effect of aeration and KNO3 in seed priming on the germination of tomato seeds. The seeds used in this study were tomato seeds var. Palupi. This study used seven treatments i.e. non-primed, KNO3 moistened paper, KNO3 soaking, KNO3 aeration, water moistened paper, water soaking, and water aeration. The study was arranged in a completely randomized design (CRD). All data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA and followed by means analysis using Fisher’s LSD (Least Significant Difference) test at P<0.05. The result showed that all priming treatments gave a better performance in FGP (Final Germination Percentage), MGT (Mean Germination Time), and GRI (Germination Rate Index) compared to the non-primed. The best treatments, however, were observed in the aeration method in either KNO3 or water in all parameters observed. KNO3 gave a slightly better performance than water in all parameters, although there was no statistical difference between the two treatments

This study empirically tests the relationship between tacit knowledge management inclination, internal explicit marketing agendas and external explicit marketing agendas and how they act together to enhance business outcomes. This was done to fill in the gap in the body of knowledge on the dearth of empirical research on tacit knowledge management inclination and marketing orientation. Using the quantitative research method and purposive sampling technique, data were collected from 89 respondents with significant business and marketing experience through a well-structured questionnaire with closed-ended questions. Employing regression analysis, the hypotheses were tested, and the finding highlighted that tacit knowledge management inclination positively affects external explicit marketing and internal explicit marketing agendas. At the same time, the result obtained from the interaction of the three constructs shows that they all have a positive effect on business success. In practice, Firms can operationalise and implement tacit knowledge management activities with existing explicit marketing programs to attain business success
