What do we not know to implement the European Landscape Convention?

    Get PDF
The European Landscape Convention (ELC) is the first international convention to focus specifically on landscape. Poland signed the ELC on 21 December 2001, ratified in September 2004, and the Convention came into effect on 1 January 2005. Since that moment, however, the ELC implementation efforts in our country have been limited. It is assumed that poor progress in the ELC implementation in Poland has been caused by insufficient knowledge on what the ratification of the ELC implies and requires. The paper aims to explicate a number of key issues and associated questions that can be identified in relation to the implementation process. Of primary importance is the explanation of ELC`s principles, aims and measures, followed by the discussion on and clarification of concepts used in the ELC. The paper may contribute to improvements in the implementation process in Poland by the identification of gaps in the knowledge on the ELC, with a view to stimulate the research in support of the implementation of the European Landscape Convention

ZINC IN SEPARATED SEQUENTIAL FRACTIONS FROM SIX SOILS ON THE SLOPES OF THE SIEDLCE HIGH PLAIN

The aim of the study was to evaluate the total content of zinc in the fractions separated from the soils located in two transects on the moraine slope of the Siedlecka High Plain (some situated above and some beneath the underground municipal landfill site). The highest total content of zinc was detected in the soils situated beneath the underground municipal landfill site. The sequential fractioning was performed by the Zeien-Brümmer method. The speciation analysis revealed that this metal was bound to different components of the soil solid phase. The highest percentage of zinc content was detected in the residual fraction F7 in the parent rock horizons and the lowest was noted in the bioavailability fractions, i.e. exchangeable F2 and easilyeasily soluble F l. In transects A and B of the tested soils significant correlations were found between the content of zinc in the separated fractions and its total content, the total content of iron and manganese, clay fraction <0.002 mm, cation exchange capacity (CEC) as well as between the content of carbon organic compound and zinc in the F4 organic fraction

Telemedicine technology acceptance - survey research among hospitalized and ambulatory patients in Poland

Introduction. Telemedicine can be defined as the use of telecommunication technologies to provide medical information and services. Telecare includes devices which are capable of monitoring vital signs and contact the doctor remotely. In the case of a sudden health problems it is possible to quickly localize patient through built-in GPS. Aim of the study. Evaluation of social awareness in the field of telemedicine and patients’ willingness to use modern technologies for indirect contact with a physician. Material and method. Survey research carried out among hospitalized and ambulatory patients. Results. The questionnaire was returned by 198 patients. Only 24.5% of hospitalized and 18.6% ambulatory patients stated that the concept of telemedicine is known to them. 56.1% of respondents declared their willingness to remotely consult a doctor. The greatest interest was expressed by people aged 18-30 - 74.1% of respondents compared to 50.7% among patients over 60 years. The interest of remote consultation was comparable between city dwellers and inhabitants of rural areas (59.3 % compared to 54.12%). Conclusions. The results of our study show that public awareness in field of telemedicine is small. Without increasing information policy about possibility of using a remote form of contact with physician among patients, potential of telemedicine will remain unused. High interest in teleconsultation among young patients gives hope for a wide application in the future

Abandoned agricultural lands in buffer zones around landscape parks in the Łódź Voivodeship – habitat background, spatial distribution, scale of the phenomenon

The publication presents an evaluation of the ecological role of abandoned agricultural lands which exist around the seven landscape parks in the Łódź Voivodeship. In thirty-nine land abandonment study plots, arranged into thirteen groups, agrophysical and agrochemical analyses were conducted as well as phytosociological and mycological inventorying, in order to determine the relationships between the vegetation and macromycetes fungi and the abiotic features of the natural environment. The role of geocomplex potential, the influence of adjacent urbanised areas and the development of touristic functions in rural areas were demonstrated in the spatial pattern of abandoned lands. The research revealed a high diversity of vegetation, flora and macromycetes fungi, vulnerability to the impact from the neighbouring habitats and the importance of abandoned lands as refugia of species which enrich the biodiversity. At the same time, attention was drawn to invasive plant species of non-native origin, which may pose a threat to the natural phytocoenoses of protected areas.Niniejsza monografia w języku angielskim jest podsumowaniem wyników badań w ramach grantu NCN nr 1760/B/P01/2011/40 – „Ekologiczna rola odłogów stref otaczających parki krajobrazowe w województwie łódzkim”
