    Analysis of Productivity and Cost of Forwarding Bundles of Eucalyptus Logging Residues on Steep Terrain

    The objective of this study was to evaluate the productivity and costs of two Spanish forwarders, models Dingo AD-8468 and AD-2452, in the hauling of bundles of residues after Eucalyptus globulus clear cuts on steep terrain in Northern Spain. In addition, various models to predict time consumption for the main work elements and productivity were fitted including several independent variables previously selected using stepwise regression. Finally, the models explain between 83% and 97% of variability. Since the equations are based on simple variables (depending on each individual equation this was either velocity empty and loaded, slope loading, distance empty/loading/loaded or load per cycle), they will be a helpful and easy to use tool to assist in forest management planning. Productivity was 6.75 odt/PMH for the Dingo AD-8468 forwarder and 11.56 odt/PMH for the Dingo AD-2452. Cost per tonne for the Dingo AD-8468 was 6.77 €/odt compared to 3.94 €/odt for the Dingo AD-2452

    Improving spatial synchronization between X-ray and near-infrared spectra information to predict wood density profiles

    Wood density is one of the most important physical properties of the wood, used in improvement programs for wood quality of major timber species. Traditional core sampling of standing trees has been widely used to assess wood density profiles at high spatial resolution by X-ray microdensitometry methods, but alternative methods to predict wood properties quality are also needed. Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, a non-destructive technique, is being increasingly used for wood property assessment and has already been demonstrated to be able to predict wood density. However, the estimation of wood density profiles by NIR has not yet been extensively studied, and improved models using spectra information (NIR) and X-ray data need to be developed. To this end, partial least square regression (PLS-R) models for predicting wood density were developed at a 1.4 mm spatial resolution on Pinus pinaster wood cores, with an improved spatial synchronization along the tangential and radial directions of the strip, between X-ray data and NIR spectra. The validation of the best model showed a high coefficient of determination (0.95), low error (0.026) and no outlier. Compression wood samples were not detected as outliers and were correctly predicted by the model. However, pith spectra were detected as outliers and its predicted values were overestimated by 33% due to unusual spectra suggesting a diverse chemical composition.     Novel approach to assessing residual biomass from pruning: A case study in Atlantic Pinus pinaster Ait. timber forests

    Forestry residual biomass from pruning operations is an important, though little studied, potential resource. Residues normally remain in the stand, since tools for their accurate quantification do not exist and it has no particular end use. Traditional tree biomass estimation models consider the whole-tree, but estimating pruned biomass requires the development of more specific equations. This work provides a modelling approach for assessing biomass along the stem and the corresponding residual biomass from forest pruning, and quantitative results from different pruning intensities in Pinus pinaster Ait. are presented. Two types of models were considered: allometric biomass equations (whole-tree) and biomass ratio equations (tree by height along the stem), and the 2-parameter Weibull distribution function resulted in the best characterization. Diameter at breast height was the best explanatory variable in all equations, and model accuracy increased when models were combined with total tree height for the tree stem and thicker branches, or with crown ratio for the remaining tree crown components. This study provides a powerful tool to estimate residual pruned biomass, enabling its better management as a valuable source of bioenergy, as well as the importance in nutrient balance and fire risk which it plays in a sustainable forestry productionWe thank the Forest Services of the Government of the Principality of Asturias for access to the forests used in this study and for financial support.     Caracterización de la madera de Castanea sativa Mill. de procedencia española

    La madera de castaño de procedencia española no está presente como material estructural en la norma europea EN 1912, y por lo tanto no está asignada a ninguna clase resistente como sí lo están otras especies españolas. Por ello, en el presente trabajo se realizó una caracterización de madera aserrada de castaño de Asturias con fines estructurales, realizando los ensayos según la norma UNE EN 408:2004, y calculando sus valores característicos según la norma UNE EN 384:2010. Los valores obtenidos permitieron asignar una clase resistente de las establecidas en la norma UNE EN 338:2010. Fueron evaluadas un total de 260 probetas de dos secciones (40x100 y 40x150 mm) siendo asignada una clase resistente D24, resultando la densidad y la resistencia a flexión los parámetros limitantes y observándose un valor de módulo de elasticidad superior al correspondiente a dicha clase. La relación entre los módulo de elasticidad longitudinal y transversal obtenidos experimentalmente fue de 10 aproximadamente, mientras que la normativa establece, como valor genérico, 16. Se observó que la singularidad de la madera que provocó un mayor porcentaje de rotura fue la presencia de nudos, presentando estas probetas un valor de resistencia significativamente menor. Chestnut timber from Spain is not included as a structural timber in the European standard EN 1912 nor is it assigned to any strength class like other Spanish species. Therefore, a characterization of structural chestnut timber from Asturias was made according to the UNE EN 408:2004, and the characteristic values were calculated according to the UNE EN 384:2010. The values obtained allowed the assignment of a strength class according to UNE EN 338:2010. 260 samples of two sections (40x100 and 40x150 mm) were tested and a D24 strength class was assinged. Density and bending strength were the limiting parameters, and the value of modulus of elasticity was higher than the values asssigned to D24. The relationship between modulus of elasticity and the shear modulus obtained was approximately equal to 10, while this value in the UNE EN 384:2010 is set at 16. The characteristic of the wood which caused a higher percentage of failure was the presence of knots, resulting in significantly lower resistance values

    Assessing the effect of pruning and thinning on crown fire hazard in young Atlantic maritime pine forests

    Management of fuel to minimize crown fire hazard is a key challenge in Atlantic forests, particularly for pine species. However, a better understanding of effectiveness of silvicultural treatments, especially forest pruning, for hazard reduction is required. Here we evaluate pruning and thinning as two essential silvicultural treatments for timber pine forests. Data came from a network of permanent plots of young maritime pine stands in northwestern Spain. Vertical profiles of canopy bulk density were estimated for field data and simulated scenarios of pruning and thinning using individual tree biomass equations. Analyses of variance were conducted to establish the influence of each silvicultural treatment on canopy fuel variables. Results confirm the important role of both pruning and thinning in the mitigation of crown fire hazard, and that the effectiveness of the treatments is related to their intensity. Finally, models to directly estimate the vertical profile of canopy bulk density (CBD) were fitted using the Weibull probability density function and usual stand variables as regressors.
