Aerial Planning for Flying Taxi of Dubai

    Get PDF
Urban air mobility is the future of transportation in cities, and Dubai is one of the first cities to announce the use of air mobility models in the city. The air taxi is expected to be operational in 2023. It is announced to be electric and autonomous and will be the first in the region. The overall goal of the study was to prepare the infrastructure to operate the taxi. The problem was that the Dubai authorities have not yet started this phase, while the target date for operation has already been announced. The basic design of the study involved a mixed analysis approach of qualitative and quantitative data to get the best results for the zones and locations of the stations in Dubai, focusing on the city center and connecting both urban and rural areas in Dubai. The project lays the foundation for one of the most important pillars for the operation of the air taxi, which is the infrastructure. The taxi needs a base map of the area with the flight zones of Dubai to guide its movement and suggest the best route for the taxi. The type and location of stations is also important in the initial phase of operation. The next phase will be to prepare the possible routes for the air taxi and the emergency landing site

Apis mellifera honeybees are the most important pollinator worldwide. Numerous diseases and parasites are causing the decreasing numbers of the A. mellifera honeybee. The main objective of this thesis was to study the A. mellifera honeybee pathogens and parasites along with the Varroa destructor mite. The study included (1) Studying bacterial communities associated with A. mellifera and A. florea in the UAE. (2) Conducting a molecular detection of A. mellifera honeybee pathogens in the UAE. (3) Studying Varroa mites and Varroa-associated pathogen in the UAE. DNA and RNA were extracted from A. mellifera honeybees and V. destructor mites. Subsequently, PCR assays were conducted. Sequencing results revealed 23 bacterial operational taxonomic units (OTUs) in both A. mellifera and A. florea honeybees. Another result, Nosema ceranae parasite was detected, while Nosema apis parasite was not found in any of the A. mellifera honeybee samples. In addition, two viral pathogens were detected in both A. mellifera honeybee and V. destructor mites. The species of the V. destructor mite was confirmed using DNA sequencing. This study is the first of its kind in the UAE. Further studies are needed to investigate the effect of these pathogens on honey production in the UAE

Spatial and Temporal Variations in Abundance and Composition of Benthic Macrofauna Associated With Seagrass Beds in Abu Dhabi

This study compared the seasonal variations of macrofaunal communities found within the seagrass beds of protected areas and non-protected areas in Abu Dhabi. The study took into consideration the spatial and temporal differences of the sites and seasons as well as other environmental factors, like trace metals concentrations, water temperature, sediment composition, salinity and pH. The main objective and aim of this study is to investigate changes in the community structure of macrofauna with changes in location and seasons. Environmental parameters and biological samples were collected in-situ and analyzed at UAEU labs from both sites, during both seasons (winter and summer). All data have analyzed according to standardized techniques. The results showed that there was a temporal and spatial difference in the macrofaunal communities. Some of the findings showed that the Non-protected area has a slightly higher diversity, due to the increase of Polychaeta populations, than in the protected area, which highlights the need of better management plans for all seagrass beds, in and out of protected areas. The study has also shown that, until no enough studies have carried out on seagrass in Abu Dhabi. Moreover, it shed light on the species diversity within the seagrass community with both spatial and temporal variations

Traffic Characterization of an Internet of Things(IOT) Network Architecture

Internet of things (IoT) is an evolving paradigm that is currently getting more attention and rapidly gaining importance. The basic idea of IoT is to connect everyone and everything to the Internet for information exchange. It is essential to develop a clear understanding of characteristics of IoT traffic sources as well as to find a traffic model that efficiently characterizes the statistical behavior of IoT traffic. Since many IoT devices generate relatively small sized data, we are particularly interested in an IoT network architecture where data from a number of different IoT devices are aggregated at an IoT gateway. We focus on characterizing the IoT aggregated traffic pattern for three common IoT applications with real-time and non-real-time quality of service (QoS) requirements. These applications include healthcare, smart cities, and video surveillance. Our study is based on generating a real IoT traffic trace in a lab by using various sensors and devices in the aforementioned applications. The generated traffic trace is transmitted wirelessly over the air using Wi-Fi technology to an IoT gateway. The input network traffic to this gateway is characterized. In the experiments, the amount of input traffic to the gateway is varied and different traffic patterns for each of the selected applications are examined. Statistical tests and parameters are used to determine the best matching packet inter-arrival time distribution for different traffic penetrations. Moreover, we also examine packet size distributions. Based on our empirical data, the experimental results indicate that IoT packet inter-arrival time follows a Pareto distribution. However, it can be better modeled as a Weibull distribution in some traffic patterns. Our experimental results also reveal that the packet size distribution of different penetrations of the studied IoT applications is not in a good match with the commonly used Geometric distribution. Furthermore, we investigate the impact of traffic characterization on the performance of the considered IoT network architecture for a certain availability of network resources using computer simulations

    ESTABLISHING BLOCKCHAIN-RELATED SECURITY CONTROLS

    Get PDF
Blockchain technology is a secure and relatively new technology of distributed digital ledgers which is based on interlinked blocks of transactions. There is a rapid growth in the adoption of the blockchain technology in different solutions and applications and within different industries throughout the world, such as but not limited to, finance, supply chain, digital identity, energy, healthcare, real estate and government. Blockchain technology has great benefits such as decentralization, transparency, immutability and automation. Like any other emerging technology, the blockchain technology has also several risks and threats associated with its expected benefits which in turns could have a negative impact on individuals, entities and/or countries. This is mainly due to the absence of a solid governance foundation for managing and mitigating such risks and the shortage of published standards to govern the blockchain technology along with its associated applications. In line with the “Dubai blockchain Strategy 2020” and “Emirates blockchain Strategy 2021” initiatives, this thesis aims to achieve the following: first, preservation of the confidentiality, integrity and availability of information and information assets in relevance to blockchain applications and solutions implementation across entities, and second, mitigation and reduction of related information security risks and threats; through the establishment of new information security controls specifically related to the blockchain technology which have not been covered in International and National Information Security Standards which are ISO 27001:2013 Standard and UAE Information Assurance Standards by the Signals Intelligence Agency (formerly known as the National Electronic Security Authority). Finally, Risk Assessment and Risk Treatment have been performed on five blockchain use cases; to determine their involved risks with respective to security controls appropriately. The assessment/analysis results showed that the proposed security controls can mitigate relevant information security risks on the blockchain solutions and applications and consequently protect the information and information assets from unauthorized disclosure, modification, and destruction
