Democratic survival in Latin America (1945-2005)
Why do democracies survive or break down? In this paper, it returns to this classic question with an empirical focus on Latin America from 1945 to 2005. The argument deviates from the quantitative literature and a good part of the qualitative literature on democratic survival and breakdown. It is argued that structural variables such as the level of development and inequalities have not shaped prospects for democratic survival in Latin America. Nor, contrary to findings in some of the literature, has economic performance affected the survival of competitive regimes. Instead, it is focused on the regional political environment and on actorsâ normative preferences about democracy and dictatorship and their policy radicalism or moderation. It is argued that 1) a higher level of development did not increase the likelihood of democratic survival in Latin America over this long time; 2) if actors have a normative preference for democracy, it is more likely to survive; and 3) policy moderation facilitates democratic survival
Reaching donors: neuro-linguistic programming implications for effective charity marketing communications
Proponents of neuro-linguistic programming claim that individuals process the world through preferred sensory representation systems. In other words, we each internally represent the external world through our senses i.e. visual people "see" the world, kinaesthetics "feel" the world, and auditory people "hear" the world. Although there is some limited research into the field of neuro-linguistic programming, particularly that relating to sensory representation systems and marketing communications, this is the first empirical study to investigate the impact of neuro-linguistic programming on charity marketing communications. Our findings reveal that the choices individuals make when exposed to such communications are sensory-based. Although UK charities spend vast sums on main broadcast and press advertising, much of this spend may be wasted as these messages may be filtered out by target market segments. Insights gained from this research may help charities to either ensure their messages reach each potential donor within current target segments, or by further segmenting potential donors by their preferred sensory representation systems, thereby being able to target any direct communications more effectively

The human CTF4-orthologue AND-1 interacts with DNA polymerase α/primase via its unique C-terminal HMG box
A dynamic multi-protein assembly known as the replisome is responsible for DNA synthesis in eukaryotic cells. In yeast, the hub protein Ctf4 bridges DNA helicase and DNA polymerase and recruits factors with roles in metabolic processes coupled to DNA replication. An important question in DNA replication is the extent to which the molecular architecture of the replisome is conserved between yeast and higher eukaryotes. Here we describe the biochemical basis for the interaction of the human CTF4-orthologue AND-1 with Pol α/primase, the replicative polymerase that
initiates DNA synthesis. AND-1 has maintained the trimeric structure of yeast Ctf4, driven by its conserved SepB domain. However, the primary interaction of AND-1 with Pol α/primase is mediated by its C-terminal HMG box, unique to mammalian AND-1, which binds the B subunit, at the same site targeted by the SV40 T antigen for viral replication. In addition, we report a novel DNA-binding activity in AND-1, which might promote the correct positioning of Pol α/primase on the lagging-strand template at the replication fork. Our findings provide a biochemical basis for the specific interaction between two critical components of the human replisome, and
indicate that important principles of replisome architecture have changed

Urbanisation and nest building in birds: a review of threats and opportunities

Urbanisation is characterised by land-use changes such as increased residential housing, business development and transport infrastructure, resulting in habitat loss and fragmentation. Over the past two decades, interest has grown in how urbanisation influences fundamental aspects of avian biology such as life-history strategies, survival, breeding performance, behaviour and individual health. Here, we review current knowledge on how urbanisation influences the nesting biology of birds, which determines important fitness-associated processes such as nest predation and community assembly. We identify three major research areas: (i) nest sites of birds in urban areas, (ii) the composition of their nests, and (iii) how these aspects of their nesting biology influence their persistence (and therefore conservation efforts) in urban areas. We show that birds inhabiting urban areas nest in a wide variety of locations, some beneficial through exploitation of otherwise relatively empty avian ecological niches, but others detrimental when birds breed in ecological traps. We describe urban-associated changes in nesting materials such as plastic and cigarette butts, and discuss several functional hypotheses that propose the adaptive value and potential costs of this new nesting strategy. Urban areas provide a relatively new habitat in which to conserve birds, and we show that nestboxes and other artificial nest sites can be used successfully to conserve some, but not all, bird species. Finally, we identify those subject areas that warrant further research attention in the hope of advancing our understanding of the nesting biology of birds in urban areas
Analyzing Ideological Communities in Congressional Voting Networks
We here study the behavior of political party members aiming at identifying
how ideological communities are created and evolve over time in diverse
(fragmented and non-fragmented) party systems. Using public voting data of both
Brazil and the US, we propose a methodology to identify and characterize
ideological communities, their member polarization, and how such communities
evolve over time, covering a 15-year period. Our results reveal very distinct
patterns across the two case studies, in terms of both structural and dynamic
properties
Lifelogging user study:bystander privacy
Automatically and passively taking pictures (using lifelogging devices such as wearable cameras) of people who donât know theyâre having their picture taken raises a number of privacy concerns (from a bystanderâs perspective). We conducted a study focussing on the bystandersâ concerns to the presence of augmented reality wearable devices in two contexts (one formal and one informal). The results suggests the need to embed privacy enhancing techniques into the design of lifelogging applications, which are likely to depend upon an array of factors, but not limited to the context of use, scenario (and surroundings), and content
Itâs been mostly about money!: a multi-method research approach to the sources of institutionalization
Although much has been written about the process of party system insti- tutionalization in different regions, the reasons why some party systems institutionalize while others do not still remain a mystery. Seeking to fill this lacuna in the literature, and using a mixed-methods research approach, this article constitutes a first attempt to answer simultaneously the following three questions: (1) What specific factors help party systems to institutio- nalize (or not)? (2) What are the links (in terms of time and degree) as well as the causal mechanisms behind such relationships? and (3) how do they affect a particular party system? In order to do so, this article focuses on the study of party system development and institutionalization in 13 postcommunist democracies between 1990 and 2010. Methodologically, the article innovates in five respects. First, it continues the debate on the importance of ââmixed methodsââ when trying to answer different research questions. Second, it adds to the as yet brief literature on the combination of process tracing and qualitative comparative analysis. Third, it constitutes the first attempt to date to use a most similar different outcome/most different same outcome pro- cedure in order to reduce causal complexity before undertaking a crisp-set qualitative comparative analysis. Third, it also shows the merits of combining both congruence and process tracing in the same comparative study. Finally, it also develops a novel ââbipolar comparative methodââ to explain the extent to which opposite outcomes are determined by reverse conditions and conflicting intervening causal forces
