Henry Vaughan and Seventeenth-Century Mysticism <Articles>

This paper deals with the relationship between Vaughan’s mysticism and the religio-political situation in his time. He finds a spiritual groan in stones and a ‘busy commerce’ between creatures and God. Moreover, he regards stones as ‘my fellow-creatures’ and thinks that they will be delivered from bondage at the last judgement. Vaughan often tries to hear God’s voice. The poet complains that his conversation with God cannot be maintained because the doctrine of the Holy Bible has been perverted by the fallen ‘zeal’ of Puritans in the confusion of the Civil War. He tries to unite his voice and the voice of Nature, and to create a ‘Symphony of Nature’. This idea is based on Jacob Behmen’s theory that God’s voice or the Divine sound of Nature arises from all creatures in great joyfulness, and restores ‘a Joyful Harmony’, wherewith the Eternal Spirit plays, or melodizes. Hermetic theory of music also helps Vaughan to describe the voices of Nature. And Vaughan’s attempt to gain a single united voice, which is often manifested in his mystical expressions, is the way to obtain the holy voice of God. Moreover, in Vaughan’s poems, Puritan zeal seems to be condemned as the excessive heat of fire, which destroys all things in the alchemical process. Thomas and Henry Vaughan describe a Puritan as an owl, a kind of false alchemist, who cannot distinguish between a generating, good heat and a devastating, bad one. In addition, the poet describes the Puritans’ ‘New light’ as merely a ‘guilded beam’ in the process of false alchemy. These alchemical expressions can be read as the poet’s attempt to resist the zeal of contemporary Puritans. Vaughan tries to transform the ‘hard, stubborn flints of this world’ to gold by God’s Alchemy

A Case of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura Involving Diffuse Alveolar Hemorrhage

    Get PDF
Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura(ITP) is an autoimmune disease which cause thrombocytopenia by the autoantibody against plateletmembrane glycoproteins. It usually develops petechiae, purpra of the skin and mucosal bleeding for thrombocytopenia. It is uncommon for diffuse alveolar hemorrhage to be developed by ITP. We experienced a case of ITP in which a respiratory infection involved diffuse alveolar hemorrhage. Here we propose the possibility that alveolar inflammation participates in development of a diffuse alveolar hemorrhage, so it is necessary to pay enough attention to a respiratory infection in ITP

Vegetable juice preload ameliorates postprandial blood glucose concentration in healthy women : A randomized cross-over trial

Background and Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the acute effect of drinking vegetable juice 20 min before carbohydrate on postprandial blood glucose concentrations in young healthy women. Method: In this randomized controlled cross-over study, 24 women (age 21.3 ±0.6 years, HbA1c 5.4 ±0.2 %, mean ± SD) consumed either 200 g of vegetable juice, vegetable (150 g of tomato and 40 g of broccoli), or water at 20 min before consuming 200 g of boiled white rice for 3 separate days. The blood glucose concentrations were measured by self-monitoring blood glucose pre- and post-breakfast at -20, 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 120, and 180 min. The glycemic parameters were compared among 3 days. Results: The incremental glucose peak at 45 min (vegetable juice 48.3 ± 4.1, vegetable 47.4 ± 3.3 vs. water 66.8 ± 4.3 mg/dl, respectively, both p < 0.01, mean ± SEM) and large amplitude of glycemic excursion (LAGE; vegetable juice 57.1 ± 3.1, vegetable 58.3 ± 3.6 vs. water 78.3 ± 4.3 mg/dl, respectively, both p < 0.05) in consuming vegetable juice and vegetable at 20 min before carbohydrate intake were all significantly lower than those of water. There was no significant difference between glycemic parameters of vegetable juice and vegetable. Conclusions: Drinking vegetable juice 20 min before carbohydrate ameliorates the postprandial blood glucose concentrations as well as vegetable preload, despite total amounts of energy and carbohydrate of vegetable juice or vegetable are higher than those of water
