MOVEMENT ANALYSIS FOR JAVELIN THROWERS IN THE QATAR 2009 CHAMPIONSHIPS

A biomechanical analysis of the javelin throw at the Qatar Athletics Championships in Doha with comparison to international throwers was carried out by the Qatar Olympic Committee in 2009. This paper presents the results of this study for male finalists. The methodology used is based on Video Photogrammetric analyses at 50Hz. The results show the characteristics of the throwers' individual model at the event, which for practical purposes can be compared with the performance of the same throwers in other competitions. In general the Qatari throwers held the javelin longer and threw at a lower. Variations in throwers’ technique may result in differences in performance

"The Temporal Welfare State: A Cross-national Comparison"

Welfare states contribute to people's well-being in many different ways. Bringing all these contributions under a common metric is tricky. Here we propose doing so through the notion of "temporal autonomy": the freedom to spend one's time as one pleases, outside the necessities of everyday life. Using surveys from five countries (the United States, Australia, Germany, France, and Sweden) that represent the principal types of welfare and gender regimes, we propose ways of operationalizing the time that is strictly necessary for people to spend in paid labor, unpaid household labor, and personal care. The time people have at their disposal after taking into account what is strictly necessary in these three arenas-which we call "discretionary time"-represents people's temporal autonomy. We measure the impact on this of government taxes, transfers, and childcare subsidies in these five countries. In so doing, we calibrate the contributions of the different welfare and gender regimes that exist in these countries, in ways that correspond to the lived reality of people's daily lives.

Epidemic dynamics of respiratory syncytial virus in current and future climates.

A key question for infectious disease dynamics is the impact of the climate on future burden. Here, we evaluate the climate drivers of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), an important determinant of disease in young children. We combine a dataset of county-level observations from the US with state-level observations from Mexico, spanning much of the global range of climatological conditions. Using a combination of nonlinear epidemic models with statistical techniques, we find consistent patterns of climate drivers at a continental scale explaining latitudinal differences in the dynamics and timing of local epidemics. Strikingly, estimated effects of precipitation and humidity on transmission mirror prior results for influenza. We couple our model with projections for future climate, to show that temperature-driven increases to humidity may lead to a northward shift in the dynamic patterns observed and that the likelihood of severe outbreaks of RSV hinges on projections for extreme rainfall

Pengujian Aktivitas Antibakterial Pada Tempe Terhadap Bakteri Penyebab Diare

Tempe adalah bahan makanan yang sudah populer di Indonesia. Selain sumber zat gizi yang bernilai tinggi, tempe juga diduga mempunyai khasiat lain.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mempelajari daya hambat zat antibakterial dalam tempe terhadap beberapa jenis bakteri termasuk bakteri penyebab diare.Pada prinsipnya dalam penelitian ini dipelajari pengaruh penambahan ekstrak tempe terhadap pertumbuhan bakteri. Jenis bakteri penguji diambil dua jenis gram-positif dan empat jenis gram-negatif. Tempe sebagai sumber zat antibakterial, berupa tempe yang dibuat dengan menggunakan Rhizopus oligosporus dalam bentuk biakan murni, USAr dan laru; dua jenis yang terakhir ini dibeli dari pedagang tempe. Pengukuran pertumbuhan bakteri dilakukan dengan menggunakan Spectronic-20, Bausch dan Lomb.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dalam tempe yang dibuat dengan biakan murni terdapat zat antibakterial yang dapat menghambat pertumbuhan bakteri.Dihasilkannya zat antibakterial tersebut pada proses fermentasi, sangat dipengaruhi oleh kemurnian jenis kapang dan media tempat pertumbuhan kapang

Lebers Amaurosis in Three Siblings: A case report

This case report appears to be first reported incident of Lebers congenital amaurosis in three siblings in Kaduna State. Genetic issues, clinical presentation, counselling, treatment and future progression of this irreversible blinding condition are discussed. Creation of macroscopic quantum superposition states by a measurement

We propose a novel protocol for the creation of macroscopic quantum superposition (MQS) states based on a measurement of a non-monotonous function of a quantum collective variable. The main advantage of this protocol is that it does not require switching on and off nonlinear interactions in the system. We predict this protocol to allow the creation of multiatom MQS by measuring the number of atoms coherently outcoupled from a two-component (spinor) Bose-Einstein condensate.Comment: 4 pages (revtex4), 2 figure
