    Evolución de la auto-resiliencia entre madres viudas en Malasia

    This study aims to explore the experiences of widowed mothers on the evolvement of their self- resilience after the loss of their spouses. This study which adopts a phenomenological approach involves six widows as respondents in semi-structured in-depth interviews. Data analysis results using Atlas.ti shows three main themes that emerge in the development of self-resilience among widowed. These themes encompass the following: the process of adapting, coping skills and support system. The process of adapting used by widows in developing self-resilience involves emotional, cognitive and behavioral adjustments. Widowed also uses spiritual, behavioral, cognitive and emotional approaches as part of their coping skills strategies to increase self-resilience. Support systems that are beneficial for respondent’s resilience come from family, friends, employers and government agencies. Widowed are able to bounce back, to beat the odds after a devastating life event, depending on how far they can adapt and cope, and the amount of support system received. Findings from this study suggest counseling services and interventions for single widowed mothers to focus more on adaptation, support systems, and coping skills to increase self-resilience.Este estudio tiene como objetivo explorar las experiencias de las madres viudas en la evolución de su capacidad de recuperación después de la pérdida de sus cónyuges. Este estudio que adopta un enfoque fenomenológico involucra a seis viudas como encuestadas en entrevistas en profundidad semiestructuradas. Los resultados del análisis de datos con Atlas.ti muestran tres temas principales que surgen en el desarrollo de la auto-resiliencia entre las viudas. Estos temas abarcan lo siguiente: el proceso de adaptación, las habilidades de afrontamiento y el sistema de apoyo. El proceso de adaptación utilizado por las viudas en el desarrollo de la auto-resiliencia implica ajustes emocionales, cognitivos y de comportamiento. Viudo también utiliza enfoques espirituales, conductuales, cognitivos y emocionales como parte de sus estrategias de habilidades de afrontamiento para aumentar la capacidad de recuperación. Los sistemas de apoyo que son beneficiosos para la capacidad de recuperación de los encuestados provienen de familiares, amigos, empleadores y agencias gubernamentales. Las viudas pueden recuperarse, superar las probabilidades después de un evento vital devastador, dependiendo de hasta qué punto puedan adaptarse y hacer frente, y la cantidad de sistema de apoyo recibido. Los resultados de este estudio sugieren servicios de asesoramiento e intervenciones para que las madres viudas solteras se centren más en la adaptación, los sistemas de apoyo y las habilidades de afrontamiento para aumentar la auto-resiliencia

    The Development Of Expert Learners In The Classroom

    The term ‘expert learner’ refers to students who are actively engaged with the materials learned and take responsibility for their own learning. Literature reviews suggested the use of metacognitive approach to help develop students to become expert learners. Research on development of expert learners can be traced from movements that focused on the importance of learning strategies and “learning how to learn” approach. Some researchers combined the role of teachers and students in formulating a framework on how to develop expert learners. This study aimed to identify issues related to the development of expert learners in the classroom. Data were collected from focus group with students and teachers in Malaysia.  Findings were reduced into thematic categories representing students’ and teachers’ perceptions on the issues. Results of the study showed that the use of metacognitive strategies among students is very minimal and many teachers did not aware the benefit of making the learning process visible to students. The implementation of “learning to learn” approach in the teaching and learning process remain one of the key problem need to be address in order to help students learn effectively in the classroom

    Kemahiran asas konseling merupakan cara seorang kaunselor dalam menggunakan teknik atau kemahiran tertentu dalam membantu klien semasa sesi kaunseling dijalankan. memahiran asas tersebut sangat penting dimiliki kaunselor, karena merupakan nadi dalam hubungan membantu antara kaunselor dengan klien. Kaunselor harus pandai dan tepat dalam menggunakan kemahiran asas tersebut, agar proses konseling berjalan baik dan berkesan. Penelitian tentang kemahiran asas konseling perlu dilakukan untuk melihat kompetensi kemahiran asas konseling dalam kalangan guru konseling sekolah menengah. Kemahiran yang akan dilihat antara lain adalah kemahiran kemahiran mendengar, attending skill, parafrasa, refleksi, rumusan, dorongan minimal, konfrontasi, empati dan non verbal. Kemahiran asas konseling dalam kajian ini dilakukan melalui kajian kepustakaan. Model Allen Ivey (2014), Brammer (1973), Carkhuff (1979), dan Gerad Egan (1999), keempat model ini merupakan model kemahiran kaunseling yang bersifat komprhensif untuk melihat kompetensi kemahiran konseling dalam kalangan kaunselor.     Reliability and validity of peer aggression coping self-efficacy scale

    Worldwide, most of the mainstream media commonly reports bullying behavior. Nevertheless the instruments for measuring bullying behavior and the attitude towards bullying behavior among Malaysian adolescents are lacking. This study examined the reliability and validity of the peer aggression coping self-efficacy scale measuring the self-efficacy of bully victims among Malaysian adolescents. The scale, which consists of 45 items, was translated to Malay language using back translation method and its validity was examined using 176 high school students. The split-half reliability result revealed Cronbach’s alpha of 0.91, indicating a high reliability. Four experts in the counseling field established face validity. The Peer Aggression Coping Self-Efficacy Scale provides a useful measure for examining children’s self-efficacy

    The relationship of teacher’s immediacy to student motivation and student learning: a literature analysis

    This article presented a literature review of research done on a construct that has been widely studied overseas but not yet done in Malaysia, that is, ‘teacher’s immediacy’. The focus of analysis is research on the relationship of teacher’s immediacy to student motivation and student learning. Conclusions drawn from the research shows that teacher’s immediacy is good for teachers, students and the teaching process. Method found to be most commonly used in measuring teacher’s immediacy is student report. Finally this paper discusse the implications of the findings on the field of research and education in Malaysia

    Kecerdasan emosi dan komitmen pekerjaan dalam kalangan pensyarah universiti di Indonesia

    The aim of this study is to identify the profiles of emotional quotient and work commitment among 265 university lecturers in Indonesia. Instruments used to gather data for this research are the Inventori Kepintaran Emosi Malaysia (IKEM), or Malaysian Emotional Quotient Inventory (MEQI), and an instrumen measuring the work commitment of university lecturers. Descriptive statistics test showed from the Emotional Quotient Inventory, the lecturers scored highest in the spiritual and maturity domains, medium in motivation, self regulation, and empathy, and lowest in self awareness and social skills. Research also shows significant differences in emotional quotient among the lecturers based on age group and working experience, and significant difference in work commitment based on age group, education level, and work experience. Results show a significant relationship between emotional quotient and work commitment. Regression shows that social skill dimension in the emotional quotient contribute significantly towards work commitment. Information from this study is hoped to be useful for policy makers of higher education in Indonesia in their efforts to alleviate the work quality of university lecturers

    This article describes two counseling cases regarding college student problems, focusing on the issue of managing autonomy. Data is obtained through observation, counseling report, and recorded interviews that occurred in five sessions. Data from the interviews was analyzed by listening to the tapes, writing the verbatim and categorizing. This data was compared to the counselor’s written report in order to match the information gathered. Results showed that both clients were not prepared and unable to manage freedom in a matured way, having family conflicts, too dependent on peers and failed to fulfill responsibilities as students. Background information revealed that the clients were not exposed to freedom before college life, having strict and violent fathers, and are middle children. Counseling processes conducted involved assertiveness training and family counseling. The implemented counseling approaches indicated positive results in which the clients regained self confidence, gained insights on family relationships and family support, and developed more effective behaviors

    This study aimed to investigate how masculinity influences bullying behaviors among male secondary students. Four hundred and twenty male students from five schools with high discipline problems in the Penang Island answered the Level of Bully Behavior Inventory (Inventori Tahap Tingkah Laku Buli). From this group, 74 students who scored high and medium were asked to answer the Students’ Masculine Level Inventory (Inventori Tahap Maskulin Pelajar) and were interviewed. Results showed significant correlation between the level of bullying behaviors and the level of masculinity. These male bullies described themselves most as humorous, organized, atheletics, and high spirited but least as macho looking, fast runner, strong body built, and rich. The interview revealed that these boys bullied so that they will be favoured by peers, liked by girls, and feared by other students. Implications of the study on the personality development of male students are discussed

    Permasalahan pelajar-pelajar fakir miskin di daerah Sabak Bernam

    This study examined problems faced by students from poor families in the state of Selangor, especially in the district of Sabak Bernam. Forty-two students in Form 5 were selected as participants for this study. These group is made up of 19 students who stay in three community areas named Desa Kasih provided by the Pusat Zakat Selangor, and 23 who stayed outside of the community. Focus group interview was used to collect data. Results showed that students in this study exhibit healthy aspirations and positive values eventhough they faced financial constrains. The most obvious challenge for them in fulfilling their aspirations is their lifestyle, which is reflected by excessive TV watching, aimless conversations, and very little time allocated for revision, homework, or reading academic, spiritual, and general knowledge
