Relationship of travel distances on total evacuation time among secondary students in Malaysia

    Get PDF
This study determines the relationship between two types of travel distances on total evacuation times among secondary students at school building. Direct measurement was done on both flat and stair travel distances together with the actual evacuation time for every student. Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) was used to statistically analyse the relationship between those determinants and total evacuation time. A weak correlation exists between prediction and actual as R value equal to 0.258 while variation in both distances could explain 6.7% variation in total evacuation time. ANOVA test proved dissimilarity between flat and stair distances, and MLR results showed significant correlation for both distances. An increase of 1 m of flat and stair travel distance will increase the total evacuation time by 0.262 and 0.217 seconds respectively when other factors remain constant. There was a significant relationship between travel distances with total evacuation time taken among secondary students

Fire risk among secondary school students community relationship of human characteristics on total evacuation time

This paper was designed to study the relationship between the human characteristics and evacuation time among the secondary students. The designed questionnaire and direct measurement approaches were used to collect the data on seven human characteristics. Pearson Correlation test was used to identify a correlation between the dependent and independent variables while Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) was performed to check the strength of the relationship and its significance level. Gender and walking speed are significantly correlate with evacuation time with p-value<0.05 and <0.001 respectively. Due to collinearity, variable weight was removed which showed more predictive capability based on ANOVA result. Walking speed is significant with p-value<0.001. The R-value of 0.69 showed a moderate correlation between observed and predicted value and 48%of the variance in evacuation time is explainable by variance in walking speed. An increase in 1m/s of walking speed will decrease 55.29 seconds of evacuation time

An epidemic phenomenon of workplace cyberloafing: investigations and implications

Cyberloafing has been experiencing exponential growth all over the world in all industries since early 2000. The rise in cyberloafing imprinted various cyberloafing behaviours among employees causing an impact on job performance. Cyberloafing among Malaysian youth remains an underexplored research terrain. Therefore, this study will discuss the relationship between cyberloafing behaviour and job performance among working Malaysian youths. In order to investigate this relationship, multiple dimensions for cyberloafing behaviour are used such as development behaviour, recovery behaviour, deviant behaviour, and addiction behaviour. In addition, the mediating effect of social networking use intensity was assessed on the relationship between cyberloafing behaviour and job performance. Based on the results obtained, it was found that there is a significant relationship between cyberloafing behaviour and job performance. Nevertheless, no statistical evidence was found for the mediating effect of social networking use intensity, hence was not retained. Copyrigh

Do women buy online impulsively more often out of enjoyment and risk tolerance?

The rapid growth of technology advancement in Malaysia enabled Malaysian consumers to browse and purchase products or services from online stores. Consequently, the shopping trend has been changing significantly from the physical store to online stores. Therefore, it is important to identify the determinants of the consumers online purchase intention. The objective of this research is to examine the relationship between impulsive buying tendency and perceived risk towards online purchase intention among Malaysian women. In order to investigate this relationship further, the mediating effect of shopping enjoyment was examined on the relationship between impulsive buying tendency and perceived risk towards online purchase intention among women online buyers inMalaysia. The study employed an online survey among women in Malaysia and the data was analyzed with SPSS. The results indicated that only impulsive buying tendency to be significant while the perceived risk was insignificant. Additionally, a partial mediation of shopping enjoyment was found between impulsive buying tendency and online purchase intention only and the same for perceived risk was unable to be retained. This findings have further supported the Theory of Planned Behaviour which claim that human will analyze the available information on hand and make a logical, reasoned decision to engage in specific behaviors. In this study, it was proven that consumers will make an impulsive purchase with the stimulation effect of shopping enjoyment. The research also discussed theoretical and managerial implications and ended with suggestions for future research

A gene encoding endochitinase from Trichoderma virens UKM-1 was cloned and expressed in E. coli BL21 (DE3). Both the endochitinase gene and its cDNA sequences were obtained. The endochitinase gene encodes 430 amino acids from an open reading frame comprising of 1,690 bp nucleotide sequence with three introns. The endochitinase was expressed as soluble and active enzyme at 20°C when induced with 1 mM IPTG. Maximum activity was observed at 4 h of post-induction time. SDS-PAGE showed that the purified endochitinase exhibited a single band with molecular weight of 42 kDa. Biochemical characterization of the enzyme displayed a near neutral pH characteristic with an optimum pH at 6.0 and optimum temperature at 50°C. The enzyme is stable between pH 3.0-7.0 and is able to retain its activity from 30 to 60°C. The presence of Mg 2+ and Ca2+ ions increased the enzyme activity up to 20%. The purified enzyme has a strong affinity towards colloidal chitin and low effect on ethyl cellulose and D-cellubiose which are non-chitin related substrates. HPLC analysis from the chitin hydrolysis showed the release of (GlcNAc)3, (GlcNAc)2 and GlcNAc, in which (GlcNAc) 2 was the main product
