Synthesis, Characterization and Antitumour Activity of Metal Complexes of 5-Carboxy-2-Thiouracil
Metal complexes of 5-carboxy-2-thiouracil with Mn(ll), Co(ll), Ni(ll), Cu(ll), Zn(ll) and Cd(ll) ions were synthesized,
characterized, and subjected to a screening system for evaluation of antitumour activity against Sarcoma-180
(S-180) tumour cells. The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, infrared, electronic spectra, room
temperature magnetic measurements and powder X-ray diffraction. The antitumour activity results indicate that
some complexes have antitumour activity both in vivo and in vitro against S-180 tumour cells
Response Analysis of Wood Structures Under Natural Hazard Dynamic Loads
The basic requirements needed for response analysis of wood structures against natural hazards are reviewed. A method for stochastic dynamic analysis of wood structures, which allows investigations into their performance and safety under natural hazards such as earthquakes and severe winds, is presented. To illustrate the method, earthquake ground motions are modeled as a stochastic process with Gaussian white noise properties. A single-degree-of-freedom wood structural system is modeled by a hysteretic constitutive law that produces a smoothly varying hysteresis. It models previously observed behavior of wood joints and structural systems, namely, (1) nonlinear, inelastic behavior, (2) stiffness degradation, (3) strength degradation, and (4) pinching. The constitutive law takes into account the experimentally observed dependence of wood joints' response to the input and response at an earlier time (known as memory). Hysteresis shapes produced by the proposed model compare favorably with common wood joints. The hysteresis model can produce a wide variety of hysteresis shapes, degradations, and pinching behavior to model a whole gamut of possible combinations of materials and joint configurations in wood construction. The nonstationary response statistics of a single-degree-of-freedom wood building subjected to white noise excitations are obtained by Monte Carlo simulation and stochastic equivalent linearization. The latter is shown to give a reasonably accurate prediction of the system's response statistics, which may be used in calculating design response values. The method of analysis is general and may be used to study the response of various kinds of structural systems, including multi-degree-of-freedom systems, as long as appropriate structural models are available and appropriate hysteresis model parameters for these systems are known
Ab-initio Study of Structural, Electronic and Elastic Properties of ErCu
First principles density functional calculations were performed to study the structural, electronic, elastic and mechanical properties of erbium copper intermetallic compound (ErCu). The calculations are carried out within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for the exchange and correlation potential. The total energy as a function of volume is obtained by performing spin-polarized calculation. Magnetically the ErCu compound is stable in ferromagnetic (FM) state and its crystal structure is CsCl-type. Ground state properties such as lattice constant (a0), bulk modulus (B), its pressure derivative (B?) and magnetic moment (?B) are calculated. The density of states at the Fermi level, N(EF) and specific heat coefficient are also estimated in majority and minority spin channels. The electronic properties such as band structure and density of states (DOS) reveal that no band gap lead to metallic character of ErCu. The elastic constants (C11, C12 and C44) and mechanical properties such as Poisson’s ratio (? ), Young’s modulus (E), shear modulus (GH), anisotropic factor (A) are also calculated . Ductility for these compounds is further analyzed by calculating the ratio of (B/GH ) and Cauchy pressure (C12 - C44). A First Principle Study of Pressure Induced Structural and Electronic Properties in Neptunium Bismuthide
We have examined the pressure induced structural and electronic properties of neptunium monobismuthides. The total energy as a function of volume is obtained by means of self-consistent tight binding linear muffin-tin-orbital (TB-LMTO) method within the local density approximation (LDA). It is found that NpBi is stable in NaCl – type structure under ambient pressure. We predict a structural phase transition from NaCl-type (B1-phase) sructure to CsCl-type (B2-phase) structure for NpBi in the pressure range of 11 GPa. We also calculate the lattice parameter (a0), bulk modulus (B0), band structure and density of states. From energy band diagram it is observed that NpBi exhibit metallic behaviour. The calculated equilibrium lattice parameters and bulk modulus are in general good agreement with available experimental data.
Efficacy of an Extract of Ocimum tenuiflorum (OciBest) in the Management of General Stress: A Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Study
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of OciBest, an extract of Ocimum tenuiflorum Linn. in symptomatic control of general stress. The participants received either placebo (n = 79) or OciBest (n = 71; 1200 mg of actives per day) for six weeks. The severity of stress-related symptoms was self-evaluated by patients at weeks 0, 2, 4 and 6 of the trial period using a symptom rating scale. After six weeks of intervention, scores of symptoms such as forgetfulness, sexual problems of recent origin, frequent feeling of exhaustion, and frequent sleep problems of recent origin decreased significantly (P ≤ 0.05) in OciBest group as compared with placebo group. Also, the total symptom scores of OciBest group revealed significant reduction
(P ≤ 0.05) as compared to placebo group. The overall improvement in OciBest group was found to be 1.6 times or 39% more in the control of general stress symptoms with respect to placebo. No adverse events were reported during the study. The findings revealed that OciBest was found to be effective and well tolerated by all the patients over the six weeks of study period
Struggling to a monumental triumph : Re-assessing the final stages of the smallpox eradication program in India, 1960-1980
The global smallpox program is generally presented as the brainchild of a handful of actors from the WHO headquarters in Geneva and at the agency's regional offices. This article attempts to present a more complex description of the drive to eradicate smallpox. Based on the example of India, a major focus of the campaign, it is argued that historians and public health officials should recognize the varying roles played by a much wider range of participants. Highlighting the significance of both Indian and international field officials, the author shows how bureaucrats and politicians at different levels of administration and society managed to strengthen—yet sometimes weaken—important program components. Centrally dictated strategies developed at WHO offices in Geneva and New Delhi, often in association with Indian federal authorities, were reinterpreted by many actors and sometimes changed beyond recognition
