Intellectual & Technical Review of Shakeb Jalali’s Verse

    Get PDF
Shakeb Jalali is the representative poet of the present age. He is mainly a ghazal poet. After independence, it seemed that Urdu ghazal would die but Shakeb is one of the poets who gave new life to it. He uses contemporary themes which make most of his poems famous like proverbs. He had a short life span but he gave ghazal a new form. He is convinced to explain big topics with great simplicity. He spent all his life in depression; even then the element of despair is less visible in his verse. His ghazals are a great asset of Urdu poetry which would influence the readers forever. His verse is based on innovation presenting an entirely new style. He was convinced to describe his experiences, observations, conditions and internal events with truth and authenticity instead of deception, deceit, and lies. His individuality distinguishes him from the poets of his era through his verse that is intellectually and technically different and the new generation seems to be influenced by it. This article analyses Shakeb’s verse in terms of technique and intellect

Exploring the meaning of climate change discourses: an impression management exercise?

    Get PDF
Purpose: This study aims to analyze how language is used to present climate change information in the narratives of Malaysian companies’ annual reports. Design/methodology/approach: The study uses content analysis and discourse analysis, and Brennan et al.’s (2009) impression management strategies and legitimacy theory were applied to explain findings. Findings: Much of the discourses are rhetorical in nature and can be considered as corporate attempts to appear concerned for climate change, consistent with an attempt to appear legitimate and manage impressions. Research limitations/implications: The first limitation is the purposive sampling used which limits the generalizability of the findings. The second limitation is that the study neglects to focus on companies in environmentally sensitive sectors which have more substantial adverse impacts. The third limitation is that the study did not examine all types of impression management strategies, limiting itself only to strategies which provide a favorable view of the firm. Finally, the study did not attempt to investigate the different levels of impression management strategies. Practical implications: A major practical implication is for regulators to consider mandatory climate change reporting at least for the sectors which contribute adversely to global warming. Originality/value: This is a first attempt to examine climate change discourses in a developing country. © 2019, Emerald Publishing Limited

Rhetoric as a form of persuasion in disclosing poverty-related CSR activities in corporate disclosures: the case of Bangladesh

    Get PDF
Research aim: This study aims to identify the persuasive strategies applied by Bangladeshi companies in disclosing poverty related corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities in their annual reports. Design/ Methodology/ Approach: This study applies the discourse analysis as an approach in exploring the narratives of Bangladeshi companies’ annual reports. It specifically focuses on the three classifications of Aristotle’s rhetoric while explanations are also drawn from the impression management theory. Research findings: This study concludes that the disclosures of the Bangladeshi companies’ CSR activities are rhetorical in nature. The analysis suggests that these companies try to portray themselves as pro-social and helpful towards the poor. Theoretical contribution/ Originality: Rather than focusing on ‘what’ was disclosed (which is the objective of most prior studies on CSR reporting in Bangladesh), this study highlights ‘how’ the disclosure was done. This study also focuses on a particular aspect which is poverty related and a linguistic analysis is used to perform the analysis which is unlike previous studies. Practitioner/ Policy implication: This study calls for the participation of regulators and stakeholders in introducing appropriate regulations that can ensure a ‘balanced’ disclosure of the companies’ CSR activities so that stakeholders are not misled. Research limitation: The main limitation of this research is that it focuses on only one kind of impression management strategies, namely rhetorical appeals

Estimation of Laffer Curve: Evidence from Pakistan

    Get PDF
Laffer curve is a tradeoff between tax cuts and tax revenues. The sketch of Laffer curve was drawn by Arther Laffer at a dinner with his friends on his napkin that reduction in taxes will increase tax revenues. Lafer curve explained that lower tax rate could encourage an additional output and it would increase income, which builds bigger tax base in an economy. In this research we have estimated the Laffer curve on the basis of Taxes on goods and services for Pakistan economy for the period of 1990 to 2016. Time series data have been collected from the world economic data base. Results explained that all the variables are significant and signs of coefficients are in accordance with the theory. Results confirm that Laffer curve is alive in Pakistan economy but its existence is in the prohibited area of Laffer curve. It is suggested that plans of taxation should be modified in such a way that maximum number of people could bring under the tax brackets. The taxation structure of the economy should ensure to lower the indirect taxes, encourage the progressive taxes and elasticity of taxation should be increased. The pattern of taxation should be encouraged after introducing some sort of incentives such as relief in the income tax and higher bank deposit rates should be realize

Ferroptosis-molecular mechanisms and newer insights into some diseases

    Get PDF
Ferroptosis is a recently discovered iron dependent form of programmed cell death, characterized by accumulation of lipid reactive oxygen species (ROS). It shows a strikingly different set of morphological characteristics from other forms of cell death, like reduced mitochondrial volume, increased bi-layer membrane density, and reduction of mitochondrial cristae with absence of any nuclear changes. Ferroptosis is mainly regulated by two core biochemical processes, namely iron accumulation and lipid peroxidation. Lipid peroxides exert their toxic effects by disturbing the integrity, structure and composition of bi-lipid cell membranes. However, being highly reactive compounds, they further propagate the generation of ROS, leading to cross-linking of DNA and proteins. Key regulators of ferroptosis include various genes involved in the above pathways, inhibition of the antioxidant system and upregulation of the oxidant system. Recent studies have shown the ferroptotic pathway to be involved in the patho-physiology of many diseases, including cancer. Understanding the biochemical mechanisms and key substances upregulating/inhibiting this pathway, may have an implication towards development of targeted therapies for various cancers, and, hence, has become a hotspot for biomedical research. This review article summarizes the core biochemical processes involved in ferroptosis, with a brief summary of its role in various diseases and possible therapeutic targets
