Peeling from a patterned thin elastic film
Inspired by the observation that many naturally occurring adhesives arise as
textured thin films, we consider the displacement controlled peeling of a
flexible plate from an incision-patterned thin adhesive elastic layer. We find
that crack initiation from an incision on the film occurs at a load much higher
than that required to propagate it on a smooth adhesive surface; multiple
incisions thus cause the crack to propagate intermittently. Microscopically,
this mode of crack initiation and propagation in geometrically confined thin
adhesive films is related to the nucleation of cavitation bubbles behind the
incision which must grow and coalesce before a viable crack propagates. Our
theoretical analysis allows us to rationalize these experimental observations
qualitatively and quantitatively and suggests a simple design criterion for
increasing the interfacial fracture toughness of adhesive films.Comment: 8 pages, To appear in Proceedings of Royal Society London, Ser.
Isolation and identification of azo dye degrading microbes using 16s r RNA sequencing
The aim of the present study was to isolate and identify azo dye degrading microbes using 16s r RNA sequencing. For this, ten effluent and fifty soil samples were collected from textile industry from a discharge panel of textile industries near Peenya and Magadi road Industrial area, Bengaluru, and dying industries near Kerur, Bagalkot, Karnataka, India. The pH, temperature, BOD, COD, Odor, Total dissolved solid (TDS), Total suspended solids (TSS), Chemical oxygen demand (COD), Biological oxygen demand (BOD), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), and Total Hardness values were very high when compared with the values given by the Bureau of Indian Standards. Pure cultures were screened on the basis of colony morphology. Three different types of unique cultures were selected and named as isolates S1, S2 and S3. Outof 6 dyes viz. Corafast blue, Corafast red, Red 3BN, Solophenyl Brown, RemazoleRG , Rubin M2B used, isolate S1 showed degradation on the maximum number of dyes Red 3BN, Corafast blue, Corafast red, in comparison to other isolates (isolates S2 and S3). Thus, isolate S1 was used for the further studies. For this study Red 3BN dye was chosen. The isolated bacterium was gram positive Bacilli. In the biochemical characterization, the isolate was partially confirmed as Bacillus sp. Further, the selected isolate was identified by sequencing the 16S rRNA sequencing. The bacterial isolate was identified as Bacillus species exhibiting 99% similarity, the phylogenic relationship of 16S ribosomal RNA gene, partial sequence of the isolated strain and species related to Bacillus species in the gene bank database. Thus, this organism may be used significantly in effluent treatment such as textile, paper, ink and other industries
Self-Energy Effects on the Low- to High-Energy Electronic Structure of SrVO3
The correlated electronic structure of SrVO3 has been investigated by
angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy using in-situ prepared thin films.
Pronounced features of band renormalization have been observed: a sharp kink
~60 meV below the Fermi level (EF) and a broad so-called "high-energy kink"
~0.3 eV below EF as in the high-Tc cuprates although SrVO3 does not show
magnetic fluctuations. We have deduced the self-energy in a wide energy range
by applying the Kramers-Kronig relation to the observed spectra. The obtained
self-energy clearly shows a large energy scale of ~0.7 eV which is attributed
to electron-electron interaction and gives rise to the ~0.3 eV "kink" in the
band dispersion as well as the incoherent peak ~1.5eV below EF. The present
analysis enables us to obtain consistent picture both for the incoherent
spectra and the band renormalization.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
The oil sardine fishery along northern Tamil Nadu coast with a note on unusually heavy landings at Cuddalore,Pazhayar and Kaveripattinam
The Indian Oil sardine, Sardinella longiceps is one of the important exploited fishery resources along the Tamil Nadu. The bulk of oil sardine were landed along the coast by the bag-net, Eda valai while lesser quantities were caught by the gill nets, Kavala valai and Thattakavala valai. Unusually heavy landings of oil sardine by the Eda valai units have been recorded at Cuddalore and Pazhayar fisheries harbours and Kaveripattinam during certain months of the period, 1989-'90. Abundance of juvenile oil sardines of the size group 110 - 114 mm was noticed during May - June, '90 at Pazhayar and in July at Kaveripattinam. Larger size groups of 175 - 179 mm predominated in September, '89 whereas in the same period of the succeeding year, 165 – 169 mm length groups supported the fishery. The unprecedented heavy landings of the oil sardine in most of the centers did not benefit the fishermen monetarily to any significant extent. Due to lack of demand for fresh fish, the bulk of catches was sun dried. Oil sardine catches are obtained along the east coast of India in areas close to harbours, backwaters and river mouths and this discontinuous distribution of fish appears to indicate its affinity, particularly juvenile phase, to areas where there is admixture of fresh and brackish water
On the traditional small-scale fisheries at Pudumanikuppam, Madras during 1979-'89

Tetramer Orbital-Ordering induced Lattice-Chirality in Ferrimagnetic, Polar MnTi2O4
Using density-functional theory calculations and experimental investigations
on structural, magnetic and dielectric properties, we have elucidated a unique
tetragonal ground state for MnTi2O4, a Ti^{3+} (3d^1)-ion containing
spinel-oxide. With lowering of temperature around 164 K, cubic MnTi2O4
undergoes a structural transition into a polar P4_1 tetragonal structure and at
further lower temperatures, around 45 K, the system undergoes a paramagnetic to
ferrimagnetic transition. Magnetic superexchange interactions involving Mn and
Ti spins and minimization of strain energy associated with co-operative
Jahn-Teller distortions plays a critical role in stabilization of the unique
tetramer-orbital ordered ground state which further gives rise to lattice
chirality through subtle Ti-Ti bond-length modulations
Low-Temperature Spin Dynamics of Doped Manganites: roles of Mn-t2g and eg and O-2p states
The low-temperature spin dynamics of doped manganites have been analyzed
within a tight-binding model, the parameters of which are estimated by mapping
the results of ab initio density functional calculations onto the model. This
approach is found to provide a good description of the spin dynamics of the
doped manganites, observed earlier within the ab initio calculations. Our
analysis not only provides some insight into the roles of the eg and the t2g
states but also indicates that the oxygen p states play an important role in
the spin dynamics. This may cast doubt on the adaptability of the conventional
model Hamiltonian approaches to the analysis of spin dynamics of doped
