Electromotive Force: A Guide for the Perplexed
The concept of electromotive force (emf) may be introduced in various ways in
an undergraduate course of theoretical electromagnetism. The multitude of
alternate expressions for the emf is often the source of confusion to the
student. We summarize the main ideas, adopting a pedagogical logic that
proceeds from the general to the specific. The emf of a "circuit" is first
defined in the most general terms. The expressions for the emf of some familiar
electrodynamical systems are then derived in a rather straightforward manner. A
diversity of physical situations is thus unified within a common theoretical

Unitary Coupled Cluster: Seizing the Quantum Moment
Shallow, CNOT-efficient quantum circuits are crucial for performing accurate
computational chemistry simulations on current noisy quantum hardware. Here, we
explore the usefulness of non-iterative energy corrections, based on the method
of moments of coupled-cluster theory, for accelerating convergence toward full
configuration interaction. Our preliminary numerical results relying on
iteratively constructed ans\"{a}tze suggest that chemically accurate energies
can be obtained with substantially more compact circuits, implying enhanced
resilience to gate and decoherence noise
B\"acklund Transformations: Some Old and New Perspectives
B\"acklund transformations (BTs) are traditionally regarded as a tool for
integrating nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs). Their use has been
recently extended, however, to problems such as the construction of recursion
operators for symmetries of PDEs, as well as the solution of linear systems of
PDEs. In this article, the concept and some applications of BTs are reviewed.
As an example of an integrable linear system of PDEs, the Maxwell equations of
electromagnetism are shown to constitute a BT connecting the wave equations for
the electric and the magnetic field; plane-wave solutions of the Maxwell system
are constructed in detail. The connection between BTs and recursion operators

Does the electromotive force (always) represent work?
In the literature of Electromagnetism, the electromotive force of a "circuit"
is often defined as work done on a unit charge during a complete tour of the
latter around the circuit. We explain why this statement cannot be generally
regarded as true, although it is indeed true in certain simple cases. Several

On the Impact of Link Layer Retransmissions on TCP for Aeronautical Communications
In this article, we evaluate the impact of link layer retransmissions on the performance of TCP in the context of aeronautical communications.We present the architecture of aeronautical networks, which is manly driven by an important channel access delay, and the various retransmission strategies that can be implemented at both link and transport layers. We consider a worst case scenario to illustrate the benefits provided by the ARQ scheme at the link layer in terms of transmission delay.We evaluate the trade-off between allowing a fast data transmission and a low usage of satellite capacity by adjusting link layer parameters
Involvement of the specific nucleolar protein SURF6 in regulation of proliferation and ribosome biogenesis in mouse NIH/3T3 fibroblasts
The nucleolar proteins which link cell proliferation to ribosome biogenesis are regarded to be potentially oncogenic. Here, in order to examine the involvement of an evolutionary conserved nucleolar protein SURF6/Rrp14 in proliferation and ribosome biogenesis in mammalian cells, we established stably transfected mouse NIH/3T3 fibroblasts capable of conditional overexpression of the protein. Cell proliferation was monitored in real-time, and various cell cycle parameters were quantified based on flow cytometry, Br-dU-labeling and conventional microscopy data. We show that overexpression of SURF6 accelerates cell proliferation and promotes transition through all cell cycle phases. The most prominent SURF6 pro-proliferative effects include a significant reduction of the population doubling time, from 19.8±0.7 to 16.2±0.5 hours (t-test, p<0.001), and of the length of cell division cycle, from 17.6±0.6 to 14.0±0.4 hours (t-test, p<0.001). The later was due to the shortening of all cell cycle phases but the length of G1 period was reduced most, from 5.7 ±0.4 to 3.8 ±0.3 hours, or by ∼30%, (t-test, p<0.05). By Northern blots and qRT-PCR, we further showed that the acceleration of cell proliferation was concomitant with an accumulation of rRNA species along both ribosomal subunit maturation pathways. It is evident, therefore, that like the yeast homologue Rrp14, mammalian SURF6 is involved in various steps of rRNA processing during ribosome biogenesis. We concluded that SURF6 is a novel positive regulator of proliferation and G1/S transition in mammals, implicating that SURF6 is a potential oncogenic protein, which can be further studied as a putative target in anti-cancer therapy
Future perspectives on automotive CAE
Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) is an integral part of today’s automotive design process. Very often OEM’s rely solely on software vendors to provide appropriate solutions. On the other hand, some companies still use in-house developed software for specific applications. It is, however, a combination of these two approaches that provides OEM’s with optimal leading edge software technology. This paper will present an overview of several relevant automotive CAE-methods that will illustrate this approach. Four important automotive software areas will be considered: vehicle CFD applications, aeroacoustics, vehicle crash analysis and occupant / pedestrian safety. The first two topics, CFD and aeroacoustics, are extensive subject areas in themselves, but will be dealt with by considering two specific topics, namely, numerical aerodynamic / flow optimization and aeroacoustic sound propagation into vehicle cabins, respectively. A more detailed focus will be placed on the two safety application areas: vehicle crash analysis and occupant safety using Human Body Models
A genetic linkage map of the hermaphrodite teleost fish Sparus aurata L.
The gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata L.) is a marine fish of great importance for fisheries and aquaculture. It has also a peculiar sex-determination system, being a protandrous hermaphrodite. Here we
report the construction of a first-generation genetic linkage map for S. aurata, based on 204 microsatellite
markers. Twenty-six linkage groups (LG) were found. The total map length was 1241.9 cM. The ratio
between sex-specific map lengths was 1:1.2 (male:female). Comparison with a preliminary radiation hybrid
(RH) map reveals a good concordance, as all markers located in a single LG are located in a single RH
group, except for Ad-25 and CId-31. Comparison with the Tetraodon nigroviridis genome revealed a considerable number of evolutionary conserved regions (ECRs) between the two species. The mean size of
ECRs was 182 bp (sequence identity 60–90%). Forty-one ECRs have a known chromosomal location in the
pufferfish genome. Despite the limited number of anchoring points, significant syntenic relationships were
found. The linkage map presented here provides a robust comparative framework for QTL analysis in S.
aurata and is a step toward the identification of genetic loci involved both in the determination of economically important traits and in the individual timing of sex reversal
The natural science of cosmology
The network of cosmological tests is tight enough now to show that the
relativistic Big Bang cosmology is a good approximation to what happened as the
universe expanded and cooled through light element production and evolved to
the present. I explain why I reach this conclusion, comment on the varieties of
philosophies informing searches for a still better cosmology, and offer an
example for further study, the curious tendency of some classes of galaxies to
