Recent data show that foreign fighters and lone wolves are of very young age. There have been many attempts to give explanations. Here there is the will to assimilate different approaches to give teachers and education operators some knowledge about the most common variables of these teens. From an environmental point of view, theories of cultural conflicts and of subculture assume relevance, as the key concept of relative deprivation. The most common individual factors are social marginalisation, medium cognitive abilities, exasperated sense of justice and morality, superficial knowledge of the belonging faith/ideology. Those characteristics, added to the typical ones of teenagers, can create a fertile field for triggers, whether traumas or meetings with charismatic leaders. Made the choice, boys become rapidly “born again”: they stave off significant others, teachers and parents. They change routine activities until they pass to violent action, pushed or alone. European agencies which deal with radicalisation elaborated prevention strategies and hope that teachers will be able to have a specific training on those matters.I dati più recenti su foreign fighters e lone wolves hanno mostrato come questi siano di giovane o giovanissima età.

Thermoanaerobacter brockiifermented serine to acetate and ethanol. It oxidized leucine to isovalerate, isoleucine to 2-methylbutyrate, and valine to isobutyrate only in the presence of thiosulfate, or when co-cultured withMethanobacteriumsp. This oxidative deamination was rendered thermodynamically possible by the ability ofT. brockiito reduce thiosulfate to sulfide or the transfer of reducing equivalents to the hydrogenotrophic methanogen. The results suggest thatT. brockiimay be of ecological significance in thermal environments in the turnover of amino acids, especially with thiosulfate or H2-utilizing methanogens are present

“Careless Talk”: Word Shortage in Elizabeth Bowen’s Wartime Writing

Elizabeth Bowen’s short story “Careless Talk” (1941) stages four characters, two women and two men having lunch in a restaurant. The text is mainly composed of their incessant, light conversation. Yet, despite the obvious abundance of food and words, absence and lack are suggested both through narration and dialogue. The social gathering thus becomes an image of the theatre of war revealing the fear of the characters confronted with the threat of annihilation and destruction. But beyond the overwhelming presence of the war, another conflict arises, opposing men to women. The story lies in taboos, double meanings, polyphony and intersemiotic echoes betraying an attempt to preserve normalised relationships, including the most stereotypical gendered identities which can be self-inflicted, precisely because the characters’ sense of their position in society is upset

Effect of n-3 fatty acids on metabolism of apoB100-containing lipoprotein in type 2 diabetic subjects

The effect of long-chain n-3 PUFA on the metabolism of apoB100-containing lipoprotein in diabetic subjects is not fully understood. The objective of the present study was to determine the effect of a daily intake of 1080mg EPA and 720mg DHA for diabetic subjects on the kinetics of apoB100-containing lipoprotein in the fasting state. A kinetic study was undertaken to determine the mechanisms involved in the effects of n-3 fatty acids in terms of a decrease in triacylglycerol level in type 2 diabetic patients. We have studied the effect of fish oils on the metabolism of apoB100 endogenously labelled by [5,5,5-2H3]-leucine in type 2 diabetic patients in the fasting state. The kinetic parameters of apoB100 in VLDL, intermediate-density lipoprotein and LDL were determined by compartmental modelling in five diabetic subjects before and 8 weeks aftern-3 fatty acid treatment. Treatment did not change the plasma cholesterol level (0·801 (sd 0·120)v. 0·793 (sd 0·163) mmol/l) but lowered the plasma triacylglycerol level (1·776 (sd 0·280) v.1·356 (sd 0·595) mmol/l; p<0·05). Treated patients showed a decrease in VLDL apoB100 concentration (0·366 (sd 0·030) v.0·174 (sd 0·036) g/l; v<0·05) related to a decrease in VLDL 1 production (1·49 (sd 0·23) v.0·44 (sd 0·19) mg/kg per h; p<0·05) and an increase in the VLDL conversion rate (0·031 (sd 0·024)v.0·052 (sd 0·040) per h; p<0·05), with no change in fractional catabolic rates. Treatment led to a higher direct production of intermediate-density lipoprotein (0·02 (sd 0·01) v 0·24 (sd 0·12) mg/kg per h; p<0·05). In conclusion, the present study, conducted in the fasting state, showed that supplementation with n-3 fatty acids in type 2 diabetic patients induced beneficial changes in the metabolism of apoB100-containing lipoprotei

How can we explain the under-representation of queers of color in our queer activist spaces ? Are racialized people destined to be eternally taken for straight without a clear statement of their non-heterosexuality ? How excluding can be the coming out prerequisite in a non-heterosexual trajectory in terms of race ? Can we bring out specific experiences of non-heterosexual backgrounds for non-white people ? Based on a qualitative study conducted with six non-heterosexual persons with colonial diasporic backgrounds living in France, my research questions the experience of heterosexual/straight passing and what it reveals of the conflicting loyalties between race and sexuality that these queers of color face everyday. My first research results challenge the assumption of a universal (homo)sexual regime of visibility that only considers a eurocentric, out, open and explicit regime of visibility. Between submissive invisibility and resistant visibility, respondents defend another dissenting regime of visibility, reserved in its demonstration, implicit in its declaration. And even though it is not experienced as the proof of a frustrated relationship to their (homo)sexuality by the respondents, their regime (or choice) of visibility is constantly considered by their white queer environment to be the expression of a dysfunction.Eventually, for the respondents, it is not so much the homophobia present in their heterosexual/straight racialized spheres they need to defend themselves from, but rather the homonormativity of the largely white queer ones. Even though claiming to be queer can function as an act of resistance to the homonormativity of LGBT groups, liberal requirements persist within queer movements and feed neoliberal assimilationism, like the injunction to subscribe to a “queer way of being” through hypervisibility without questioning its underlying white standards. In postcolonial France, a country unwilling to deal with the contemporary consequences of its history, when two identities are set back-to-back, respondents openly choose to protect their racial community against homonationalist and homonormative discourses

Peptide and amino acid oxidation in the presence of thiosulfate by members of the genus Thermoanaerobacter

    Get PDF
#Thermoanaerobacter brockii, #T. ethanolicus, #T. thermohydrosulfuricus, #T. finnii, and #Thermoanaerobacter strain SEBR 5268 (an isolate from an oil-producting well) were studied for their ability to oxidize proteinaceous compounds that included gelatin, peptides, and casamino acids. All bacteria tested used peptides and amino acids, but only slightly. However, in the presence of thiosulfate all the #Thermoanaerobacter species showed a substantial improvement in growth and/or the production of acetate, isovalerate, isobutyrate, and sulfide. Propionate was a minor product of peptide or amino acid oxidation. The reduction of thiosulfate during growth on peptides by members of the #Thermoanaerobacter$ species is a trait that closely resembles that of archaeal hyperthermophiles during growth on peptides and amino acids with elemental sulfur as electron acceptor.
