Early Science with the Karoo Array Telescope: a Mini-Halo Candidate in Galaxy Cluster Abell 3667
Abell 3667 is among the most well-studied galaxy clusters in the Southern
Hemisphere. It is known to host two giant radio relics and a head-tail radio
galaxy as the brightest cluster galaxy. Recent work has suggested the
additional presence of a bridge of diffuse synchrotron emission connecting the
North-Western radio relic with the cluster centre. In this work, we present
full-polarization observations of Abell 3667 conducted with the Karoo Array
Telescope at 1.33 and 1.82 GHz. Our results show both radio relics as well as
the brightest cluster galaxy. We use ancillary higher-resolution data to
subtract the emission from this galaxy, revealing a localised excess, which we
tentatively identify as a radio mini-halo. This mini-halo candidate has an
integrated flux density of mJy beam at 1.37 GHz,
corresponding to a radio power of P
W Hz, consistent with established trends in mini-halo power scaling.Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, accepted MNRA
Breathers in the weakly coupled topological discrete sine-Gordon system
Existence of breather (spatially localized, time periodic, oscillatory)
solutions of the topological discrete sine-Gordon (TDSG) system, in the regime
of weak coupling, is proved. The novelty of this result is that, unlike the
systems previously considered in studies of discrete breathers, the TDSG system
does not decouple into independent oscillator units in the weak coupling limit.
The results of a systematic numerical study of these breathers are presented,
including breather initial profiles and a portrait of their domain of existence
in the frequency-coupling parameter space. It is found that the breathers are
uniformly qualitatively different from those found in conventional spatially
discrete systems.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures. Section 4 (numerical analysis) completely

A quantum study of multi-bit phase coding for optical storage
We propose a scheme which encodes information in both the longitudinal and
spatial transverse phases of a continuous-wave optical beam. A split
detector-based interferometric scheme is then introduced to optimally detect
both encoded phase signals. In contrast to present-day optical storage devices,
our phase coding scheme has an information storage capacity which scales with
the power of the read-out optical beam. We analyse the maximum number of
encoding possibilities at the shot noise limit. In addition, we show that using
squeezed light, the shot noise limit can be overcome and the number of encoding
possibilities increased. We discuss a possible application of our phase coding
scheme for increasing the capacities of optical storage devices.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures (Please email author for a PDF file if the

Drift causes anomalous exponents in growth processes
The effect of a drift term in the presence of fixed boundaries is studied for
the one-dimensional Edwards-Wilkinson equation, to reveal a general mechanism
that causes a change of exponents for a very broad class of growth processes.
This mechanism represents a relevant perturbation and therefore is important
for the interpretation of experimental and numerical results. In effect, the
mechanism leads to the roughness exponent assuming the same value as the growth
exponent. In the case of the Edwards-Wilkinson equation this implies exponents
deviating from those expected by dimensional analysis.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, REVTeX; accepted for publication in PRL; added

Discrete soliton mobility in two-dimensional waveguide arrays with saturable nonlinearity
We address the issue of mobility of localized modes in two-dimensional
nonlinear Schr\"odinger lattices with saturable nonlinearity. This describes
e.g. discrete spatial solitons in a tight-binding approximation of
two-dimensional optical waveguide arrays made from photorefractive crystals. We
discuss numerically obtained exact stationary solutions and their stability,
focussing on three different solution families with peaks at one, two, and four
neighboring sites, respectively. When varying the power, there is a repeated
exchange of stability between these three solutions, with symmetry-broken
families of connecting intermediate stationary solutions appearing at the
bifurcation points. When the nonlinearity parameter is not too large, we
observe good mobility, and a well defined Peierls-Nabarro barrier measuring the
minimum energy necessary for rendering a stable stationary solution mobile.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figure
Constraining ^(26)Al+p resonances using ^(26)Al(^3He,d)^(27)Si
The ^(26)Al(^3He,d)^(27)Si reaction was measured from 0°≤θ_(c.m.)≤35° at E(^3He)=20 MeV using a quadrupole-dipole-dipole-dipole magnetic spectrometer. States in ^(27)Si were observed above the background at 7652 and 7741 keV and upper limits were set for the state at 7592 keV. Implications for the ^(26)Al(p,γ)^(27)Si stellar reaction rate are discussed
On the fundamental group of the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement
We construct two combinatorially equivalent line arrangements in the complex
projective plane such that the fundamental groups of their complements are not
isomorphic. The proof uses a new invariant of the fundamental group of the
complement to a line arrangement of a given combinatorial type with respect to
isomorphisms inducing the canonical isomorphism of the first homology groups.Comment: 12 pages, Latex2e with AMSLaTeX 1.2, no figures; this last version is

Quasi-doubly periodic solutions to a generalized Lame equation
We consider the algebraic form of a generalized Lame equation with five free
parameters. By introducing a generalization of Jacobi's elliptic functions we
transform this equation to a 1-dim time-independent Schroedinger equation with
(quasi-doubly) periodic potential. We show that only for a finite set of
integral values for the five parameters quasi-doubly periodic eigenfunctions
expressible in terms of generalized Jacobi functions exist. For this purpose we
also establish a relation to the generalized Ince equation.Comment: 15 pages,1 table, accepted for publication in Journal of Physics
