An experimental study of particle-driven gravity currents on steep slopes with entrainment of particles
International audienceResults of laboratory experiments are presented in which a finite suspension of sawdust particles was released instantaneously into a rectangular channel immersed in a water tank. Two kinds of gravity currents were studied: currents with or without entrainment of particles from the bed. Experiments were repeated for two slopes: 30° and 45°. We observed that the velocity of the front was significantly in-creased as particle entrainment occurred. In addition, our experiments showed that the front kept a quasi-constant velocity for both runs. This might suggest that the flow regime corresponded to the "slumping regime" or "adjustment phase" described earlier by Huppert and Simpson (1980)
The GRAVITY+ Project: Towards All-sky, Faint-Science, High-Contrast Near-Infrared Interferometry at the VLTI
The GRAVITY instrument has been revolutionary for near-infrared
interferometry by pushing sensitivity and precision to previously unknown
limits. With the upgrade of GRAVITY and the Very Large Telescope Interferometer
(VLTI) in GRAVITY+, these limits will be pushed even further, with vastly
improved sky coverage, as well as faint-science and high-contrast capabilities.
This upgrade includes the implementation of wide-field off-axis
fringe-tracking, new adaptive optics systems on all Unit Telescopes, and laser
guide stars in an upgraded facility. GRAVITY+ will open up the sky to the
measurement of black hole masses across cosmic time in hundreds of active
galactic nuclei, use the faint stars in the Galactic centre to probe General
Relativity, and enable the characterisation of dozens of young exoplanets to
study their formation, bearing the promise of another scientific revolution to
come at the VLTI.Comment: Published in the ESO Messenge
Multiple star systems in the Orion nebula
This is the author accepted manuscript. The final fersion is available from EDP Sciences via the DOI in this record. This work presents an interferometric study of the massive-binary fraction in the Orion Trapezium cluster with the recently comissioned GRAVITY instrument. We observed a total of 16 stars of mainly OB spectral type. We find three previously unknown companions for Ξ1 Ori B, Ξ2 Ori B, and Ξ2 Ori C. We determined a separation for the previously suspected companion of NU Ori. We confirm four companions for Ξ1 Ori A, Ξ1 Ori C, Ξ1 Ori D, and Ξ2 Ori A, all with substantially improved astrometry and photometric mass estimates. We refined the orbit of the eccentric high-mass binary Ξ1 Ori C and we are able to derive a new orbit for Ξ1 Ori D. We find a system mass of 21.7 Mâ and a period of 53 days. Together with other previously detected companions seen in spectroscopy or direct imaging, eleven of the 16 high-mass stars are multiple systems. We obtain a total number of 22 companions with separations up to 600 AU. The companion fraction of the early B and O stars in our sample is about two, significantly higher than in earlier studies of mostly OB associations. The separation distribution hints toward a bimodality. Such a bimodality has been previously found in A stars, but rarely in OB binaries, which up to this point have been assumed to be mostly compact with a tail of wider companions. We also do not find a substantial population of equal-mass binaries. The observed distribution of mass ratios declines steeply with mass, and like the direct star counts, indicates that our companions follow a standard power law initial mass function. Again, this is in contrast to earlier findings of flat mass ratio distributions in OB associations. We excluded collision as a dominant formation mechanism but find no clear preference for core accretion or competitive accretion.Marie SkĆodowska-Curie Grant AgreementFCT-PortugalERC Starting Gran
The MAORY first-light adaptive optics module for E-ELT
The MAORY adaptive optics module is part of the first light instrumentation suite for the E-ELT. The MAORY project phase B is going to start soon. This paper contains a system-level overview of the current instrument design
MAORY for ELT: preliminary design overview
MAORY is one of the approved instruments for the European Extremely Large Telescope. It is an adaptive optics module, enabling high-angular resolution observations in the near infrared by real-time compensation of the wavefront distortions due to atmospheric turbulence and other disturbances such as wind action on the telescope. An overview of the instrument design is given in this paper

Functional characterization of terpene synthases and chemotypic variation in three lavender species of section Stoechas
International audienceLavandula pedunculata (Mill.) Cav. subsp. lusitanica , Lavandula stoechas L. subsp. stoechas and Lavandula viridis l'HĂ©r. are three lavender taxa that belong to the botanical section Stoechas and are widely used as aromatherapy, culinary herb or folk medicine in many Mediterranean regions. The analysis of their bioactive volatile constituents revealed the presence of 124 substances, the most abundant being the bicyclic monoterpenes fenchone, camphor and 1,8âcineole that give these three species their respective chemotypes. Most noteworthy was fenchone which, with its reduced form fenchol, made 48% of the total volatile constituents of L. pedunculata while present at 2.9% in L. stoechas and undetectable in L. viridis . In order to provide a molecular explanation to the differences in volatile compounds of these three species, two monoterpene synthases ( monoTPS ) and one sesquiterpene synthase ( sesquiTPS ) were cloned in L. pedunculata and functionally characterized as fenchol synthase ( Lp FENS), αâpinene synthase ( Lp PINS) and germacrene A synthase ( Lp GEAS). The two other lavender species contained a single orthologous gene for each of these three classes of TPS with similar enzyme product specificities. Expression profiles of FENS and PINS genes matched the accumulation profile of the enzyme products unlike GEAS . This study provides one of the rare documented cases of chemotype modification during plant speciation via changes in the level of plant TPS gene expression, and not functionality
