    The Correlation Between Husband's and Wife's Education: Canada, 1971-1996

    We present a measure of the correlation between the education levels of spouses based on a bivariate ordered probit model. The change in this correlation over time can be measured while controlling for the large changes in the educational attainment levels. The model is estimated with data from 20 Surveys of Consumer Finances in Canada over 1971-1996. Our main findings are a reduction in this correlation among younger couples beginning in the 1980s, and an inverted U- shaped effect of the spouses' age difference on the correlation, with the maximum correlation occurring approximately when the spouses' ages are equal.correlation; education level; bivariate ordered probit model; SCF

    Stellar classification of folded spectra using the MK Classification scheme and convolutional neural networks

    The year 1943 saw the introduction of the Morgan-Keenan (MK) classification scheme and this replaced the existing Harvard Classification scheme. Both stellar classification scheme are fundamentally grounded in the field of spectroscopy. The Harvard Classification scheme classified stars based on stellar surface temperature. The MK Classification scheme introduced the concept of a luminosity class that is intrinsically linked to the surface gravity of a star. Temperature and luminosity class values are estimated directly from the stellar spectrum. Machine learning is a well-established technique in astronomy. Traditionally, a spectrum is treated as a one-dimensional sequence of data. Techniques such as artificial neural networks and principal component analysis are commonly used when classifying spectra. Recent research has seen the application of convolutional neural networks in this domain. This research investigates the effectiveness of using convolutional neural networks with folded spectra. Robust experimental and statistical techniques were used to test this hypothesis. The result show that folded spectra and 2D convolutional neural networks obtained a higher average classification accuracy when compared to spectra processed with a 1D convolutional neural network. A ResNet V2 50 architecture was also included in this experiment, but the results show that it did not match the performance of shallower network architecture.     Summary report: A preliminary investigation into the use of fuzzy logic for the control of redundant manipulators

    The Rice University Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Sciences' Robotics Group designed and built an eight degree of freedom redundant manipulator. Fuzzy logic was proposed as a control scheme for tasks not directly controlled by a human operator. In preliminary work, fuzzy logic control was implemented for a camera tracking system and a six degree of freedom manipulator. Both preliminary systems use real time vision data as input to fuzzy controllers. Related projects include integration of tactile sensing and fuzzy control of a redundant snake-like arm that is under construction

    The Independence and Economic Security of Older Women Living Alone

    We study women aged 51-75 who live alone and are not married over the period 1969-1993 using national samples from The Survey of Consumer Finances (SCF) and The Family Expenditure Survey (FAMEX). We examine Income and Expenditure Patterns over the period and find that: there have been substantial increases in real incomes of these women, particularly during the 1970's. The principal source of growth was government transfers and especially the growth in CPP incomes. Should governments withdraw this financial support, low incomes could quickly re-emerge. Incomes of those who were previously married and of the older group of these women (ages 60-75) grew more rapidly over the period. The growth in income has gone almost entirely into consumption. Some of these women are able to save, but like most sub-groups of the Canadian population there is tremendous variability in saving rates among older women.SCF; FAMEX; income; expenditure; older women
