An AGN Identification for 3EG J2006-2321
We present a multiwavelength analysis of the high-energy gamma-ray source 3EG
J2006-2321. The flux of this source above 100 MeV is shown to be variable on
time scales of days and months. Optical observations and careful examination of
archived radio data indicate that its radio counterpart is PMN J2005-2310, a
flat-spectrum radio quasar with a 5-GHz flux density of 260 mJy. Study of the
optical counterpart indicates a redshift of 0.833 and variable linear
polarization. No X-ray source has been detected near the position of PMN
J2005-2310, but an X-ray upper limit is derived from ROSAT data. This upper
limit provides for a spectral energy distribution with global characteristics
similar to those of known gamma-ray blazars. Taken together, these data
indicate that 3EG J2006-2321, listed as unidentified in the 3rd EGRET Catalog,
is a member of the blazar class of AGN. The 5-GHz radio flux density of this
blazar is the lowest of the 68 EGRET-detected AGN. The fact that EGRET has
detected such a source has implications for unidentified EGRET sources,
particularly those at high latitudes (), many of which may be
blazars.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures. To appear in ApJ v569 n1, 10 April 200
Contained-Reflected Megaturbidites of the Marnoso-arenacea Formation (Contessa Key Bed) and Helminthoid Flysches (Northern Apennines, Italy) and Hecho Group (South-Western Pyrenees)
Contained-reflected beds deposited by fully-ponded or partially-reflected turbidity currents are important because their correct evaluation can give important indications on the degree of basin confinement and on the type, size and orientation of the morphological obstacle. Through a detailed facies analysis of various significant megabeds in the Marnoso-arenacea Formation, including the Contessa key bed, in the helminthoid flysches in the northern Apennines (Italy) and in the Pyrenees (megaturbidite MT5), this work proposes a depositional model that is well consistent with the recent experimental data available in the literature, discussing their strengths and limits. The Contessa and flysch megabeds fit very well with the experimental conditions because they are deposited in narrow and elongated confined basins characterized by axial flows. Indeed, in the proposed model, it is possible to recognize facies deposited by: 1) a basal underflow directed towards the bounding slope (Facies A), 2) an intermediate part of the flow characterized by lateral deflections (facies B1), 3) an upper well-developed reversing flow (facies B2) and 4) an uppermost residual reversing flow recording the final collapse of the fine-grained suspended load forming a poorly-sorted slurry facies C and a very thick mudstone unit D. Facies A, B1 and B2 are usually separated by very thin fine-grained muddy drapes rich in carbonaceous matter, which can be traced throughout the basin. These drapes - very common in contained and confined beds in these settings - can be related to internal density surfaces, along which decoupling processes, separating underflows from reversing overflows, can easily occur. Conversely, as the MT5 is characterized by a source transversal to an elongated narrow basin, the large flow volume versus basin capacity hinders the generation of reversing flows and rebound layers favoring the formation of fully-ponded pulsating overflows able to deposit alternations of laminated and massive units. This facies type can be observed in the basins that are characterized by axial flows only near the basin margins where the pulsating collapse of the reversing flow can dominate. This study shows that the integration of detailed field studies are essential to validate experimental data from an applicative point of view
Flooding tolerance and cell wall alterations in maize mesocotyl during hypoxia.
ABSTRACT - This research aimed to characterize the tolerance to flooding and alterations in pectic and hemicellulose fractions from mesocotyl of maize tolerant to flooding when submitted to hypoxia. In order to characterize tolerance seeds from maize cultivars Saracura BRS-4154 and BR 107 tolerant and sensitive to low oxygen levels, respectively, were set to germinate. Plantlet survival was evaluated during five days after having been submitted to hypoxia. After fractionation with ammonium oxalate 0.5% (w/v) and KOH 2M and 4M, Saracura BRS-4154 cell wall was obtained from mesocotyl segments with different damage intensities caused by oxygen deficiency exposure. The cell wall fractions were analyzed by gel filtration and gas chromatography, and also by Infrared Spectrum with Fourrier Transformation (FTIR). The hypoxia period lasting three days or longer caused cell lysis and in advanced stages plant death. The gelic profile from pectic, hemicellulose 2M and 4M fractions from samples with translucid and constriction zone showed the appearance of low molecular weight compounds, similar to glucose. The main neutral sugars in pectic and hemicellulose fractions were arabinose, xilose and mannose. The FTIR spectrum showed a gradual decrease in pectic substances from mesocotyl with normal to translucid and constriction appearance respectively RESUMO - Objetivou-se caracterizar a tolerancia ao alagamento e alteracoes nas fracoes pecticas e hemicelulosicas de mesocotilos de milho submetidos a hipoxia.
