Strategic communication applied to the promotion of science: the communication and society research centre’s case
Science is an activity that makes possible the technological, social, cultural and economic development. It is important to assess the way the scientific world communicates, including the ability of adequacy to the new tools of communication of science and their respective forms of interaction with the publics. We refer to digital communication that brings increased capabilities, in relation to traditional communication. In fact, we will try to demonstrate that the investment made in online communication, embedded in a strong and coherent communication strategy can bring increased benefits for scientific dissemination.
The Communication and Society Research Centre has, as a primary concern, the dissemination of the results of their research. The current unrest around the divestment of science makes the evaluation of communication policies implemented in CECS an urgent need, to demonstrate the importance of their activity and for pursuing necessary funding for their continuation. Thus, this research aims to uncover the importance of online communication within the
communication of science and scientific research. For this purpose, we we will audit communication, focusing us on the Communication and Society Research Centre online communication tools, trying to realize the importance of using digital tools in the scientific dissemination strategy.(undefined
This text is a brief reflection on the relations of closeness and distancing between journalism and sociology. Both areas are defined by epistemological boundaries that include different positions regarding the ideal forms of intervention in political and public spaces. The sociology conveys an attitude of considerable isolation in the face of media exposure. Journalism is defined precisely by its visible role in society and politics in a persistent and ubiquitous way. This paper discusses also some ideas about the advantages of both fields to enrich themselves by sharing theoretical and methodological knowledge
Science and strategic communication: how can universities attract high school students?
As the use of new media and the new uses of traditional media evolve in
the contemporary This is a study on the use of science communication as
a component of the promotional mix prepared by universities to attract
high school students to their graduate and postgraduate programmes. It
proposes the concept of strategic science communication, to name strategic
communication practices that use science popularization to reach successful
organizational performance. And this proposal was tested through a survey
applied to high school students, within the area of influence of the University
of Minho, in Portugal. The survey was designed according to a model of
analysis developed to study the ability of strategic science communication to
act on awareness (familiarity), enjoyment (appreciation), interest (voluntary
involvement), opinion (way of thinking), understanding (comprehension),
interaction (contact activities) and action (attitude); by extending Burns
et al. (2003, p.191) vowel analogy. In the end, results point out: (1st) to the
relevance of strategic communication activities in the process of promoting
information and interaction with science; (2nd) to the positive effect of
science communication activities in the desire to apply for a higher education
institution; and (3rd) to the pertinence of the strategic science communication
concept in universities’ communication mix
Can the internet mitigate the negative effect of widowhood on Quality of Life? A gender analysis
Widowhood often reduces the Quality of Life of individuals of advanced ages by negatively afecting their social network ties. Yet conversely, the Internet has also created new opportunities for communication and interaction, thus contributing to improved Quality of Life. This research analyses the role of the Internet in the rela tionship between widowhood and Quality of Life from a gender perspective.
This study focuses on 31,814 individuals aged 65 or over residing in 17 European countries who participated in Wave 6 of SHARE – the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe.
The linear regression analyses highlighted that the role of the Internet in the rela tionship between widowhood and Quality of Life varies according to gender. More specifcally, in Europe, the Quality of Life for widowed women aged 65+ using the Internet is .414 higher (CI=.006 to .0822) than widows who do not use the Internet and married women or women in a de facto relationship whether or not they use the Internet. The results have relevant implications for the development of social poli cies and suggest a need to develop digital inclusion projects targeting older people, particularly widows, to help promote their Quality of Life.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
