The LHC internal beam dump (LHC Target Dump Injection or LHC TDI) is the main protection BID of the LHC injection system; its main function is to protect LHC equipment in the event of a malfunction of the injection kicker magnets during beam transfer from the SPS to the LHC. Several issues with the TDI were encountered during LHC operation, most of them due to outgassing from its core components induced by electron cloud effects, which led to limitations of the injector intensity and hence had an impact onLHCavailability. The absorbing cores of the TDIs, and of beam intercepting devices in general, need to deal with high thermo-mechanical loads induced by the high intensity particle beams. In addition, devices such as the TDI—where the absorbing materials are installed close to the beam, are important contributors to the accelerator impedance budget. To reduce impedance, the absorbing materials that make up the core must be typically coated with high electrical conductivity metals. Beam impact testing of the coated absorbers is a crucial element of development work to ensure their correct operation. In the work covered by this paper, the behaviour of several metal-coated absorber materials was investigated when exposed to high intensity and high energy proton beams in the HiRadMat facility at CERN. Different coating configurations based on copper and molybdenum, and absorbing materials such as isostatic graphite, Carbon Fibre Composite (CfC) and Silicon Carbide reinforced with Silicon Carbide fibres (SiC-SiC), were tested in the facility to assess the TDI’s performance and to extract information for other BIDs using these materials. In addition to beam impact tests and an extensive Post Irradiation Examination (PIE) campaign to assess the performance of the coatings and the structural integrity of the substrates, extensive numerical simulations were carried out.CERN's Sources, Targets and Interactions (STI) GroupAccelerator Consolidation Project at CERNMinistry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan (MEXT)Japan Society for the Promotion of ScienceGrants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (KAKENHI) JP16H03994transnational access activity ARIES - European Union 73087

    Non-centralized Control for Flow-based Distribution Networks: A Game-theoretical Insight

    Get PDF
This paper solves a data-driven control problem for a flow-based distribution network with two objectives: a resource allocation and a fair distribution of costs. These objectives represent both cooperation and competition directions. It is proposed a solution that combines either a centralized or distributed cooperative game approach using the Shapley value to determine a proper partitioning of the system and a fair communication cost distribution. On the other hand, a decentralized noncooperative game approach computing the Nash equilibrium is used to achieve the control objective of the resource allocation under a non-complete information topology. Furthermore, an invariant-set property is presented and the closed-loop system stability is analyzed for the non cooperative game approach. Another contribution regarding the cooperative game approach is an alternative way to compute the Shapley value for the proposed specific characteristic function. Unlike the classical cooperative-games approach, which has a limited application due to the combinatorial explosion issues, the alternative method allows calculating the Shapley value in polynomial time and hence can be applied to large-scale problems.Generalitat de Catalunya FI 2014Ministerio de Ciencia y Educación DPI2016-76493-C3-3-RMinisterio de Ciencia y Educación DPI2008-05818Proyecto europeo FP7-ICT DYMASO

Phase diagrams of Janus fluids with up-down constrained orientations

A class of binary mixtures of Janus fluids formed by colloidal spheres with the hydrophobic hemispheres constrained to point either up or down are studied by means of Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo simulations and simple analytical approximations. These fluids can be experimentally realized by the application of an external static electrical field. The gas-liquid and demixing phase transitions in five specific models with different patch-patch affinities are analyzed. It is found that a gas-liquid transition is present in all the models, even if only one of the four possible patch-patch interactions is attractive. Moreover, provided the attraction between like particles is stronger than between unlike particles, the system demixes into two subsystems with different composition at sufficiently low temperatures and high densities.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure

Cómo formar la segunda naturaleza. Notas antropológicas acerca de la educación de los hábitos

    Get PDF

Energy Efficiency of Hybrid-Power HetNets: A Population-like Games Approach

    Get PDF
In this paper, a distributed control scheme based on population games is proposed. The controller is in charge of dealing with the energy consumption problem in a Heterogeneous Cellular Network (HetNet) powered by hybrid energy sources (grid and renewable energy) while guaranteeing appropriate quality of service (QoS) level at the same time. Unlike the conventional approach in population games, it considers both atomicity and non-anonymity. Simulation results show that the proposed population-games approach reduces grid consumption by up to about 12% compared to the traditional best-signal level association policy.U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research FA9550-17-1-0259Ministerio de Cultura y Deporte DPI2016-76493-C3-3-RMinisterio de Economía y Empresa DPI2017-86918-

Randomization tests for quantifying species importance to ecosystem function

    Get PDF
    1. Quantifying the contribution of different species to ecosystem function is an important challenge. We introduce simple randomization tests (and software) for quantifying the average effect of species on ecosystem variables measured in multiple plots with and without the presence of a particular species. These randomization tests formalize the analysis of uncontrolled \u27natural experiments\u27 and quantify species effects in standardized deviation units. 2.We tested the method with data on ecosystem function in biological soil crust assemblages of lichens in semi-arid gypsum outcrops in central Spain. In sixty-three 50cm×50cm sample plots, we measured the presence and percentage cover of 17 species of lichens and the levels of five important ecosystem variables (organic carbon, total nitrogen, urease activity, phosphatase activity and β-glucosidase activity). The randomization tests revealed 13 positive and six negative associations between species presence and ecosystem function. 3.We used data from an independent microcosm experiment on ecosystem function and species composition to validate these results. Microcosms that had higher levels of organic carbon and total nitrogen also had higher average species effect scores (measured from the survey data) for the species that were present in each experimental treatment. 4.As in all natural experiments, strong species interactions, effects of unmeasured abiotic variables on species occurrence and reciprocal effects of ecosystem variables on species occurrence can potentially confound estimates of species importance. Nevertheless, the method we propose provides a simple index and statistical test of species importance that can form the basis for additional hypothesis tests and experimental studies of species occurrence and ecosystem function. © 2011 The Authors. A Coalitional Model Predictive Control Approach for Heterogeneous Cellular Networks

    Get PDF
Heterogeneous cellular networks (HetNets) are large-scale systems that comprise numerous base stations interacting with a significant number of users of diverse types. Finding a trade-off between energy consumption and quality of service is one of the major challenges in these networks. To deal with this issue, a coalitional model predictive control (MPC) approach is proposed for a HetNet powered by renewable power sources, and compared in simulation with the traditional best-signal level mechanism and the centralized MPC method. Furthermore, other key performance indicators associated with grid consumption such as the number of served users and transmission rates are also evaluated
